Hi Mira; Where would you recommend that a first time visitor to Leipzig go to gain an understanding of what makes Leipzig special. I am no longer young but hen I travel I want to see and experience cities as they are even if it is not my classic "scene". Thanks,

hmmm... i wouldn't write it online maybe, also because I am not sure of your taste and there is many sides of the city. A lot of what makes the city special is spontaneous, half-legal, temporary / one-time etc. - I would recommend to approach people that look like they do interesting stuff and ask them what places they recommend. Ask a bartender where he would dine and ask a record store employee where to party :D Generally I would look at the city centre just quickly to take that in and then venture to Leipzig West to look at art and water / canals and Karl-Heine Straße / Spinnerei Area and then walk through Waldstraßenviertel if you like historic architecture (maybe get a bite somewhere South or West Leipzig) and then go to the East of the city if you enjoy grungy urban experiments and pay-what-you like cafés. On a sunny day rent a bike and ride the wonderful way from city centre through the Auwald woods along a Russian tea house and greet a moose and wild boar until you reach Cospudener See, one of the many beautiful lakes in the area. The nature is really unique, so easy to reach from the inner city!

and also: never read any of the official "event" publications. Buy "Stadtschwärmer" it is an alternative, really pretty in-depth city guide with nice recommendations. If you want to save time, look at www.verborgenes-leipzig.de/en/English_110.html for some nice tips aswell - it is an official guide but in my area (east Leipzig) their cover is ok - and amazing compared with standard guides as it does not only cover tourists-only destinations.

@@jgunther3398 Did American troops march in in 1989 and "liberated" the town? Once again: nope! America had nothing to do with the East German "revolution" in 1989. Reagan wasn't even president then, it was Bush Sr. So how about you educate yourself on the subject before you try to school somebody who actually lived in the town at that time.

I live in Leipzig and I barely ever see them. And I live very near a refugee home. So no. This is not as much a problem as the media makes it to be.

nfletch57 There are few Immigrants in the part of Germany that is known today as East. Most of them are in the western part, especially in the Ruhr Basin.

@@annoyinggorange8667 West, of course. Not only safer but more developed. W Germany to this day pays higher taxes to help E Germany catch up. And they never will.

@@tibivaslo Your arguments date back like 20 years. That tax you refer (Solidaritätszuschlag) is paid by any German tax payer East and West and then used to fund investments in economically poor regions in both East and West. The point of higher development is now only true for rural areas, but that can't be said at all about major cities like Potsdam, Dresden, Jena and of course Leipzig.
