@@happydisaster6703 The Lion did prove superiority of Kurze and performed better against Daemon Angron than Sanguinius did. Russ’s problem against the Lion is that it would be a straight fight which the Lion is nearly unmatched in other than potentially Sanguinius. IMO, the Lion is the only primarch that I believe could defeat Sanguinius in a 1v1. His instincts and skills could carry the day against Sanguinius’s physical prowess.

To be frank the Eldar child joke is getting old. Vulkan committed the war crime because he was in a precarious state of mind after his remembrancer/ friend was killed and the Night Lords under Cuze’s orders orchestrated the entire event through firing in the crowd of refugees. To his credit, Vulkan actually went out of his way to spare the Eldar he encountered afterwards, and even sort of bonded with Eldrad Uthran. His other brothers, including probably Guilliman or Corax, and especially the Lion, might as well have killed 10 times more Eldar children directly or indirectly at the bare minimum and felt no remorse over it.

He could beat pre demon Angron, but Angron would also beat him, as shown with their “duel”, Angron would’ve won the fight, but then he’d have been gunned down by Russ’s superior tactics, so ultimately it would’ve been a draw Demon Angron would absolutely wipe the floor with him though And Magnus? He’s blowing smoke up his own ass there. If Magnus had fought the Space Wolves with everything he had from the beginning, the Thousand Sons would’ve annihilated the Space Wolves even with Sisters of Silence and Custodian help Magnus was on par with the Emperor in terms of psychic power Russ was excessively arrogant during the crusade and heresy, which just makes me more excited for how he’ll be when he returns to the setting

@@3adgamd3rPeople really be forgetting that Magnus was fighting an army that was specifically designed to counter him on top of allowing them a head start with the element of surprise. And he punched out of one of Russ' hearts while dealing with his pets at the same time. What Leman offers is not necessarily being a Primarch Executioner but his legions unwavering faith/freedom from the taint of chaos.

@@3adgamd3rI mean... the duel with Angron ended with Angron straight up winning though. Yes, Angron could have been killed by the Space Wolves and so Leman tried to use it to teach him a lesson in humility (which he did to like 3 other Primarchs, despite being, genuinely, probably THE MOST arrogant of the Primarchs pre-Heresy) and everyone always interprets Angron counting it as a win as Angron being bullheaded and stupid but... frankly, it was a duel up to that point, if I singlehandedly beat you in a fight and you then say "Okay but now all my friends can jump you" that doesn't mean I didn't win the fight. Angron won his duel against Russ, outright and then called him arrogant and pointed out Russ wasn't even supposed to be there in the first place. While it is certainly true that Russ is the better general, (I doubt Angron would have disagreed with that by the way) Angron, even pre-daemon ascension, was the better warrior.

@@josephjenott931Not at all. They fought an incredibly long fight and Lion would eventually defeat the night haunter. It could be a draw, depending on the battleground. If it is a situation such as Gehenna with Angron, Russ would have died because he can't outmanoeuvre the Lion and the numbers and equipment would be against him. He could beat Vulkan in a pure skill battle. It would be a hell of a fight, but Vulkan is not known for being a good duelist, just the one with the most pure strength.

@@guilherme5094 yeah, pure battle skill. Dorn would not be able to handle Russ in single combat. 8-9 out of ten would go for the wolf. For Vulkan I would give it a solid 7 out of 10 for Russ. Vulkan is powerful, but Russ is faster, he is not weak either and could take a hit in order to score a critical wound. Bad hit and he is gone, that's for sure. Jaghathai is out of discussion because the Warhawk said it himself, he kept his abilities hidden so no one would know his true martial skill, that's why Russ didn't consider him when he spoke with Loken

The sisters stayed back from that fight after Magnus separated them with the energy wall. Russ did have Freki and Greki but to be fair due to the shear power of the warp flowing about its probably not a stretch to say Magnus was gaining strength from it and was likely stronger than he had ever been before, and Leman won that, barely and badly injured but he won.

@@axelnext779 yes, but Russ was also wearing anti warp armor, Pariah influence is an area of affect thing so he was still being affected, he just stopped the sisters from intervening, and Magnus was forced to fight in melee which he doesn’t specialize in and Russ is one of the best melee primarchs.

@@agentc7020 Fair enough. We also know that some primarchs preform against others better than other primarchs who can preform pretty well against them. Like comparing Fulgrim or the Khan to Lion as a swordsmen, its a lot more different because we know how the fight with Dorn went, and no one was impressed with Fulgrim after that fight despite supposedly being one of the most perfect duelists of all his brothers. And as another Example, the Lion is much better against Curze than Sanguinius would be because of his ability to act on instinct and instantly change the future and set Conrad back a pace with it. Russ, I'd imagine, would be competent against any of his brothers because of his ability to be as in control as he can be furious. Which gives him an edge over his brothers who are either more fury, or more control, but lack the other. Its also why he'd never be able to beat Sanguinius is because there is no primarch as mad as him, nor in more control of it.

Russ is forgetting that the Primarchs have different specialities and wage different fights. Corvus Corax could sneak up on him and slit his throat. Alpharius could insert assassins into his entourage. Perturabo could prep time his way to victory. Etc...

Hell... even Dorn is terrified of the guy and nearly got killed by him Corvus by his own admission in one of the Horus Heresy books said to himself he couldn't take Angron, or if they did fight, he would likely lose. If Russ is that confident he could take Angron, then it's likely he's a better fighter overall than Corvus. And lets not forget - Russ did best Horus and could've killed him. Only other Primarch to do that was Sanguinius before he got curb stomped by Warp-Juiced Horus

@@captainc0rgi Konrad nearly killed Dorn and Dorns honor guard, nearly choked the Lion to death and was only stopped by a sucker sword to the spine by a named character, he 2v1 Guilliman and the Lion, and Konrad fought Sanguinius to a stand still with Sanguinius backing off as he saw a future where he kills Konrad but Konrad kills him, that fucked with Sanguinius ego so much he didn't risk trying to get Konrad to the Emperor to redeem him no Sanguinius threw Konrad into Space which Konrad survived. Konrad eat a grande to the face that sent him to the warp where he killed an army of demons, clawed his way back to real space and continued killing Ultramarines, Drak Angels, Blood Angels... Konrad is no joke even Corvus ran from fighting him, cus Konrad's future sight let's him counter Corvus invisibility.

Dorn has an interesting streak in the Heresy, beating Alpharius wasn’t exactly impressive as he was one of the weakest primarchs due to his power being split into two primarchs, but he did beat Daemon Fulgrim. Russ beat Magnus and also beat chaos infused Horus. The number one difference between the two in a fight is that one always plays by the book while the other eats the book and spits it back out. Russ is also stronger and faster than Dorn, and he is use to fighting a lot more primarchs who might be capable of bodying Dorn in a few hits. It’s the most conventional primarch vs a primarch who doesn’t even know how to spell the word convention, let alone add the al at the end of it. For Dorn to land a single blow he would have to fight harder then he has ever fought before while Russ would have to be taking his time about it. That’s not to say he would be the most incapable of fighting Russ, he’d do better than Guiliman, Lorgar, Alpharius, (non daemon) Mortarion, and of course Purterabo. But he just isn’t on that level.

On the one hand, dorn didn't so much defeat fulgrim as drag that ADHD ass to a mindfulness seminar - he made the whole thing feel tedious and embarrassing for fulgrim and he dipped. On the other hand, the undisputed best swordsman of all Astartes is of Dorn, and he sired that most calm and even-handed chapter, the black templars. Dorn has depths we don't see

He also beat Chaos Horus, something the Emperor wasn’t sure he could beat. Russ does boast, but he backs it up every time. All you gotta do is say “you won’t, no balls” and he will do it.

The only primarchs he kills are alleged, and worse still the dude sucks in melee for who and what he is. Yeah he beat Magnus, cool. Magnus also was weakened by Sisters of Silence and fighting the primarch resistant to the warp and Magnus STILL crushed one of Russ's hearts. If this wasn't hilariously sad enough, Russ didn't even finish the job with Magnus. He than goes on to fight Horus and man what a stupid fight that was, Russ fucked up yet again when he had a chance to end things with every advantage in his favorite and a magical spear to do the trick. Russ talks alot of big game, he also kinda can't back it up with anyone even when he wants to because that's Russ in a nutshell. He's a great Primarch to explore but he fucking sucks at his job.

So what your saying is that Russ took advantage of Magnus by playing to his own strengths to win a fight? Is that kinda like Batman getting kryptonite and prep time to fight Superman? Besides this, the wolves only did one thing and then got instantly KO’d and the blanks were half a kilometer away watching the whole thing. And do you really thing Magnus would have played fair? The boy had mother fucking magic and his entrance move was blasting half the space wolves, custodes and sisters of silance with fireballs and lightning as he slow walked down his pyramid. For the most part, Russ just came prepared to fight a living and walking god of war. Even then, with all the fear, with the howl that shakes the warp, Magnus might have almost won, if not for an axe to the eye and knee to the back.

@josephjenott931 I'm not saying that Russ "fought unfairly" or that Magnus wouldn't have "fought fair" I'm saying the dialogue here alludes to Leman Russ dismissing Magnus as a foregone conclusion. The question being how Russ compares to the other primarchs, this comes across to me as Russ saying "obviously I can kill Magnus I already beat him" evading everything that went into it. A lone Russ against a lone, prepared, and wanting to fight Magnus gets absolutely bodied considering Magnus almost won regardless of everything Russ prepared. With enough prep just about anyone could defeat anyone, I'm simply stating the wording used by Russ glosses over both the intention of the question and the situation where he barely scraped by.

The SW/Custodes/SoS fought against a planet, that did not detected them until the very last moment, with Magnus, obfuscating the whole event until the very last moment. Magnus was suicidal, and only intervened, when he could no longer watch his sons die...

A fight with Leman and Ferrus would be insane. They are the only Primarchs who met the Emperor and proceeded to throw hands. Both of them lost of course, but it would be very interesting to see who would win that one. If it’s a flat out fist fight, no primarch is beating Ferrus. If it’s a duel, the odds are a bit more even. After a fight like that though, they would likely have a ton of respect for each other and probably proceed to try and out eat/drink one another.

The writer had to do this because they need to take their time to build up the other Primarchs. One way to do that is to have them be praised by, or defeat, the "McGuffin" Primarch, which is Russ. A good example is Hulk in the Avengers. He is so over-powered that he is often used as a tool to show how powerful a villain is. Like Thanos beating him so easily. Or showing the power of Mjolnir by the Hulk not being able to lift it. Beating Russ or having Russ praise another Primarch is a way of building up in the minds of readers the image of the other Primarchs. Russ is one of the most written about and well defined Primarchs. So they build off of him. But since the wolves were DESIGNED to bring other Astartes Legions to heel, we all know Russ would have beaten Angron and Lion if he'd wanted to and wasn't holding back. Russ stopped fighting the Lion to laugh. He deliberately lost to Angron. He ended up beating Horus with the Emperor's spear, but he held back to try to save Horus and save the crusade. The whole thing about Russ is he's a loyal monster. He could kill other Primarchs but won't go beyond what his father wants him to do. Not even for his own bloodlust. He knows who butters his bread and lets him be a world conquering badass. In a way it raises him up and in a way it diminishes him. Angron is the anger that lets loose. Maybe also Ferrus Manus and a later Lorgar. Horus and Perturabo are the seething smouldering anger. Sanguinius, Corax & Fulgrim (and also Horus to some point) are the savage iron fist in the white Glove. Guilliman, Dorn and even Lorgar in some ways are those who use force towards a greater goal of order. ... Now I'm blabbing. I think you all get it that Russ is the Loyal wolf on a chain waiting to be set loose. He is really cool, but also what the other primarchs call him: A loyal lap dog.

But you make EXACTLY my point for me. They have to have RUSS say these things to build up the other Primarchs. In the video above Russ also says he could beat anyone but Sanguinius and Kurze. So go ahead and quote Russ again. I'll point you back to the video and quote you the times its suggested Russ took out the 2 lost Primarchs. He was designed to bring rogue Primarchs under control. The canon is all screwed up because of this "McGuffin Primarch" writing. Maybe they WANT fans to debate about this stuff. I think what GW did by mistake was built up the lore and mystery of the Primarchs for far too long and now that they are trying to actually write this all out there is no way to satisfy what the various fans all think and have built up in their minds about the legend of these characters. My favorite Primarch is Ferus Manus and I think Russ and his Wolves would take the Iron Hands in a straight fight.

Don’t confuse him with Magnus now. The only fault Russ had in that duel, was that he wanted to show Horus mercy and forgiveness. Something even the Emperor granted Horus at the end. Of course we all know that the Emperor’s mercy is just another way of saying death but the point remains, he did win, and opposed to all he had done and every way he had behaved up until that point would have someone thinking otherwise, he broke free from the character of the barbarian people thought he was. It was just really badly timed.

@@Mgauge I dunno, Leman's record isn't exactly spotless, he would've lost to Magnus had his wolves not intervened, he lost to Angron, he tied with the Lion, and he would've died when he fought Horus if his legion had not intervened. I think he'd have a hard fight against Gulliman

@@Mgauge well, G-Man were fighting Angron quite well after he fought Lorgar who was juiced by the Warp after all of the sacrifices. Yes, Girlyman lost, but he put very decent fight. The fight was far from overwhelming destruction.

Vulkan would fold Russ like a paper airplane, Angron actually beat him in single combat quite handily (yes I know Russ baited him into a killbox, the strategic victor was russ but he got his ass beat in the duel), Magnus probably wouldn't beat him in single combat but he could fry his soul if he wasn't nerfed on prospero and Lion, having fought Curze and also beat daemon Angron (given specialized equipment specifically to beat daemon angron), Russ is either bragging for the sake of raising confidence or his guess is way the hell off

Tbf though wasn't that the point? Russ wasn't trying to win the duel, he was trying to teach Angron a lesson about his Legion. The conversation between Lorgar and Angron on that story made for a great read.

The Lion proves that he is way way way way better at strategy and tactics, accomplishing in mere months what took Russ the better part of a decade, then proceeds to body Russ three times in a row when they come to blows at the end of the campaign. Russ admits, in private to one of his newest Legionnaires, that the Lion is better than him.

I admit that Leman won the first part of his duel with Horus, but without the help of the space wolves, Horus would've killed him

I like the space wolves, I do. But Russ is talking mad shit when he had the opportunity to kill Horus earlier and failed to do so. Also, have to speak up as Thousand Sons fan, Russ was hard carried through that fight. The fact that the TS’s were able to counter attack and take down as many as they did when caught unaware was proof of that.

He beat Horus later in the same book from this scene. That hadn’t happened yet. When he does get the chance to kill Horus, he did beat him. Fully chaos powered and still Russ won. His only fault in that fight was that he didn’t have the same mercilessness that he showed Magnus and tried to redeem his brother.

@@josephjenott931 That Horus was still not as chaos-powered as he was when he fought the Emperor and the Angel. Also once again he only won because Horus was fooling around. On top of that in the Magnus fight he was literally saved by his wolves despite having a whole squad of SoS with him.

I don't think Russ is wrong... Only other Primarch apart from Sanguinius to best Horus in a fight. Don't think the others would be able to. Konrad is a MONSTER hand to hand, as seen in him 2v1'ing the Lion and Rouboute on Macragge. Think Russ is pretty spot on tbf

Despite having anti warp armor and warp resistance, Russ lost the duel with Magnus until he called his wolves in, at which point he nearly lost again after Magnus killed his wolves. He lured Angron into a killbox, but he lost the duel. He did beat Horus, but I don't think pre end and the death Horus was a top tier duelist anyway. I think he would've been ground to a pulp by Vulkan because Vulkan beat Curze when he had nothing but a hammer, and he also mentioned that he went easy on the other primarchs in dueling cages for fear he would hurt them

Perty doesn’t like duelling. As Roboute mentions in the Dark Imperium series, Perty will just hit you with artillery and a lot of guns. It’s part of how he eventually subdued Daemon Angron remember.

Perty also basically one shotted Fulgrim while getting his life drained, that may have more to do with Fulgrim being distracted at the time, but it's still worth something

I personally think they needed more books about the unity times to really drive home the pain of the Heresy. Seeing the stability and kinship of Horus Rising made everything a knife in the gut. A Russ sparing with his brothers, bonding in the only way he could? That would be something.

@@luizbizarro4757 that was Leman's intention but from what I've seen in Betrayer it seems he didn't expect Angron to fight just as much as he did, hence why he ordered elite space wolf units to encircle them. And besides, I would never pass on an opportunity to hate Leman and the wolves.

Saying he let him win is straight copium does that even sound like Leman? The whole lesson of the Night of the Wolf that Leman and Lorgar were trying to drill into Angron's head was winning the battle but losing the war is pointless but Angron couldn't understand that

@@Angels510 saying that Leman didn't allow Angron to win doesn't make any sense, if that was the case the Worldeathers and wolves would have put and end to eachother through drawn out conflict, due to Angron using Leman's retaliation as an excuse to fully go to war. I do think Leman has all the cognitive capacity of a particularly blunt rock, I don't believe he is that naive.

Konrad nearly killed the Lion in 2 fights. When the Lion finally beat Konrad that was after he tried to 2v1 him with Guilliman, after Konrad fought Sanguinius, killed a bunch of Dark Angels, Ultramarines, Blood Angels, was blown into the warp killed an army of demons clawed his way back into real space... Between all of Konrad's fights the Lion could have rested Konrad was deep in enemy territory he hasn't stopped to rest for a second.

The Lion lost two of the three fights he had with Conrad and nearly was coked to death in the second one. Your comparison is also flawed because that means that Russ could easily floor Sanguinious, because Horus beat him easily and Russ beat Horus. We both know that Russ couldn’t beat Sanguinious, and we both know that the fight between himself and the Lion was so close that it was mere circumstance that would have gotten the Lion killed in that fight, and only a fit of the giggles saved him from being tossed off a spire that stood a mile above ground. It’s not a fair comparison.
