Without explaining the meaning behind every other line, I'll just state that Neil did confirm the song's purpose. It's about someone thinking they're asleep and slowly realizing they're actually dead. It's unlikely it refers to any distinct, western "afterlife" such as heaven or hell given it completely lacks the symbolism of either. Just a single soul stricken with terror as it decays into the unknowable. You're at the party ツ

***Bojack Horseman Spoilers*** This explanation is eerily similar to the second to last episode of Bojack Horseman, where Bojack thinks he is having the same dream he usually has where he is at a dinner party with his family and many people he has hurt, but slowly realizes he isn't just dreaming, but actually dying since he got drunk and passed out in a pool. Which is strange because this episode came out about 4 years after the song was written.

@@MegaFPVFlyer It's likely the dude in the song (but not confirmed) accidentally OD'd while trying to use something to force oneself to fall asleep. They don't realize when they die due to the drowsiness and think they're still trying to fall asleep, then they think it's a dream, and then they realize the truth when the image of their soul begins rigor mortis (as their body does in the real world). Hence all the "your eyes are already shut" and "too late to wake up". Also, quite ironic that the neighbours partying caused this person great inconvenience (and possibly also death), yet their soul is stuck forever in a nightmarish version of said party. With the same music that kept them up all night playing forever. And yes, this likely goes on "forever" as "the sun doesn't come up" and "the hour hand's gone". At least they're not "alone"... whatever that means. For better or worse, I suppose.

Hey! I've been listening to this song pretty frequently for around the past month and finally got around to giving credit where it's due Warning: cringe edge alert lmao I don't like parties at all due to past stuff that's happened, but I'm a huge extrovert who loves talking with people and I try to be as positive as possible in every situation, and it ends up being this strange tug-of-war between sheer horror and genuine joy for me whenever I'm stuck at a party When I first found this in my reccomended I'd never heard the song, but was just getting into Lemon Demon so I thought I'd try - and I've never had anything more accuratley describe what the sensation and feeling of being at a party is like for me It's really nice to feel like someone gets it, and even though it's definitley NOT Neil's authorial intent to describe going to a party with ptsd this song is really comforting to me in a strange way, and I wouldn't have found it without you Thank you! :DD this song helps me a bit

god all i can imagine when “they’re in your house” is said is just an amalgamation of teenagers melted together slowly hunching to your room. all in anguish from once being invited to the party. also the protagonist becomes the party from a plug connecting to the back of the neck, being controlled by some teen kid in the shadows. also lights come out of the protagonist’s mouth and eyes and the cord that connects to their neck slithers looking for them once they escape and eventually invites them again. you are not yourself. the kid sits behind you, controlling your limbs with a modded dualshock 2 controller. he smirks after finally getting you in his clutches. he camouflages by wearing a black hoodie, dark grey jeans, black high top old skool vans, and his black hair already helps. he wants you. this is the only way he could get you. his plans? unknown.

To me this entrails the following scene- This person is in their bed, the neighbors next door are teenagers throwing a party. The person can't sleep due to the noise. Soon, a gang/ group of teenagers break in there and kill people there, explaining the lyrics- 'People screaming bloody murder'. Fever dream perhaps explains what they think they are having when they hear it. Then the teenagers go to the person's house and break in, they find him and kill him very fast with a gun. The person is then taking the hand of, perhaps, something similar to an angel. They don't understand because they don't know they're dead. Then, the person is at 'the party', or perhaps purgatory. They are stuck there for a long time, eventually, the person realizes this isn't normal and notices that there aren't actual people or birds and the time never changes. Once they realize, they slowly change into their next life. It's too late they died. Or perhaps they were in a coma and in the end they died from it. Eyes shut tight likely means the denial of the situation. Wake up is the mind's attempt to make them go past denial.

@@vulpeslyrics actually it about the afterlife. the song starts off with a super loud annoying party next door, stopping them from sleeping at 4am as the song literally states at some point they die probably window breaking part. "eyes shut tight never open up", eyes being closed is referenced multiple times after this line like during the scene where the hands on the clock go away, "you try to close your eyes but they are already shut so tight", another hint is the line "a place you've seen before you born being said a few times", finally the album spirit phone which the song is from is all about life and death, particularly the first song on the album is about life while the last song is about death, this song being about the afterlife makes tin of sense when you realize it isnt included in the album but is a bonus song as the afterlife comes after death and the song about death is the end of the album.

i honestly think that this song is like a devilman cry baby/homestuck trickster type thing. like the party is full of demons and some of them break into their house and take them into the house. theyre the only real human and they realize theyve seen the party before they were born, in some sort of purgatory. they slowly turn into one of the demons and blend into the crowd. thats my personal theory and im mostly writing this for my own reference lol

I like to believe that this is the other side of Lifetime Achievement Award, where you are in the popular artist's POV. This song might take place at the first time the celebrity was revived. (I assume that each chorus in Lifetime Achievement Award is another attempt at reviving him since he keeps on dying) He could remember seeing his room before he died the second time ("you lock the door... you shut your eyes as tight as the window breaks..." he must be inside a bedroom!), and it's the same place when he first died. ("It's a place you seen before you were born" or revived in this matter) Taking Neil's intentions with this song, it's possible that the person is in its own personal afterlife space after death that reflects on his past second life. He was the party because everyone knows him and the celebrity always get into crowds and concerts, so he is always with his people, which reflects on the afterlife place he is in right now. This might also be the reason why he can't sleep last night because he must be partying so hard before he died. Those "too late" "wake up" in the refrain must have been said by the people who are surrounding the celebrity who just died in his room (maybe that's why they are screaming bloody murder). Although, I can't figure out the "You don't understand" part. Maybe since he's dead, he literally can't understand anything really. Or maybe he cannot understand why people want him so much that they can just break into your room through door and window just to see you. It's also possible that since he's dead, he just feels the things that surrounds him and not really see anything. Like he is in a constant dream state and it's just replaying what happened to him before he died.

what i imagine happening in this song is, like the protaginist says in the beginning, hes sleeping, hearing loud party music when he is grabbed by some sort of creature. essentialy, he is killed and his body remains undead, joining this mob of corpses, which explains some of the lyrics that dont seem to make sense. describing the experiences both his body and his soul in the afterlife. theres some sort of undead horde that plays party music, or maybe a cult

Wow, you all have radically different interpretations of this song than me. You know that one skit from Limmy's Show, "I'll imagine they're my pals?" (If not: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNCdq7eQuaemkas.html ) Well, if you put an introvert who *is* invited to the party into Limmy's shoes, you'll get this song. They were invited to a party held by their housemate but they didn't go due to anxiety (a voice that only they can hear). Now, as they survey the aftermath of the party, they are feeling regret about not participating. They feel like something is wrong with them for not participating, and that they wouldn't have been alone last night, but it's too late now.

This will sound stupid but when I was suicidal I often took Benadryl. This song perfectly encapsulates the delirium it inflicts on people in higher than normal doses. Whenever I took higher than 400mg I would have convincing hallucinations of music playing, shadow people, auditorial hallucinations of whispers and people calling my name. I understand the song is about death and stuff but the comparison was funny to me
