It's crazy that supply chain issues are still affecting companies in late 2022. They need to find suppliers in multiple countries so that if one fails to meet demand, they can ramp up production elsewhere.

There’s several things you can do to get them temporary heat but the first thing I would check after no blower would be to go to the thermostat and put it in the Fan On position to see if that circuit is working. You could also get a universal control board that replaced lots of OEM boards and not deal with Lenox if you can’t get the OEM from them.

Ted this is a perfect example of technological crossroads.... The PCB on that Furnace is built to control a Version 2.3 ECM Blower Motor. Lennox decided to NOT implement a Version 3.0 ECM PCB on their Furnaces at that time, so the way to circumvent the issue was to use the Version 2.3 ECM PCB and install a "decoder" of sorts to literally translate the AC prior version ECM language into a DC communicating ECM Blower Motor. Basically....technology causing technological issues!!!

How about a single stack old fashioned heater style blower relay and leave the psc motor as a permanent fix. The slight loss in efficiency won't be as costly as having you come back and swap back to the OEM parts.

That little transformer looking device is used for "circulation" speed. They use that to send a very light signal to the blower module to step the speed down to circulation only.

Lennox used to be made in America from what I understand. I cone across very old Lennox furnace and ac. Built like a tank with the metal and electrical. Probably still needs replacing or really watch the CO output. But I am always impressed seeing that very old Lennox stuff and made in America. Reaching 30 to 40 yes old

Years ago where I was working started using those air drive zone dampers for the most part they did ok I guess we did have a pretty hard winter one year and alot of the homes that the box was under the house or in a cellar the pump or line froze and so did alot of the 90 percent furnace drain box so they went back and rethought all of those installs I guess it was a live and learn I was only like 8 years into my career so I only knew enough to be a danger to myself but things like that is what teaches us thanks for the video

First time viewer from Canada. Am an engineer but know nothing about your world. I found this a fascinating fix, landing yellow and ultimately black on ground and circ was very cool. The blower is continuous but at least they have heat right away. I am still trying to figure out the cap you mounted on the plenum. Liked and subscribed.

I work for a global manufacturer of HVAC components and I'll bet parts from my company are in that very furnace Ted is working on. Our manufacturing plants are in Mexico with distribution warehouses in Canada, Europe and Asia. My specific function is auditing parts prices for profitability. The supply chain shortages are still very real unfortunately as we close out 2022, but that's what we get relying on China for the majority of raw materials and components. Ted was shocked at the cost to replace that board, the chip shortage is responsible for that. My company is adding surcharges to the per piece price of many components and those with chips sets are the worst. One chip we use has a $25.00 surcharge. Look at that board and count how many chips are on it and you can see how it shoots up to $900.00 cost. No we aren't gouging anyone; trying to sell our products priced competitively, deliver a quality product in a timely fashion is an everyday discussion with our customers who constantly threaten to take business elsewhere. The irony of those threats is where they going to go? Our competitors are in the same situation as us.

In the early 2000’s I would go on calls and come across Lennox and try to order their parts and it was a super difficult and costly process. I never enjoyed working on them and didn’t understand the appeal. All I know is that if someone has one of the mainstream brands, you can get them back up and running with inexpensive parts from Amazon.

This was awesome seeing the heat restored. Would the rust stain above the power choke be a factor? My guess is no...most likely the static pressure took out the electronic head of the motor.

One trick I like using when trouble shooting blowers is, to take a cut off male end of a power cord and wire the motor leads L1 and N directly to 120V. Its a nice little trick to double check your diagnosis. saved me a cpl times from ordering an un-needed motor.
@myHVAClife
@myHVAClife Жыл бұрын
I have done that a few times. But no need for full time fan, unless you are doing a temporary fix till parts come in or unit is replaced!! For a permanent fix, Just run common to the blower and break the speed through a one pole sequencer to give you the on and off delay! Energize the sequencer with a pair of cooling and heating 90-340 isolation relays. A call for Y will close a relay sending 24v to the sequencer in cooling and a call for W will close a relay sending 24v to the sequencer in heating. Works as a permanent repair when replacing an ECM motor with a PSC! works in an air handler as well in a 240v set up! Leaving a blower running constantly will pull cold air back in the house when it is cold and humidity back in the house in the summer.

VSM/ECM good for efficiency and varied application flexibility, but not a fan of the reliability. Had mine quit one day in winter, with a electrical smoke smell , the burning circuit board kind of smell. Dismantled and found the in rush current limiters bad. Seem common failure on those... I replaced them and cleaned everything up. Ran great for another 5 months then just quit. No smell or noises this time. Did not see anything wrong (that I could get to). Had ¬340V DC from the power rectifier board into the motor half... But that's where I got stopped because the motor half is potted and no easy way to get to it. Yep, $1k+ for the motor and matching ''controller''... Dad had identical system and I borrowed his motor/controller and it fired up. Nope, not paying $1k+ for a replacement that likely will fail... Installed a tried and true PSC motor, adjusted my airflow and pressures and 8 years later shes still purring along, zero issues. $75 vs $1k+, no brainer for me. Not worried about the efficiency stuff, the costs are negligible to me.

If that ECM motor has been replaced once before, I'd bet this existing motor itself is still good and the module is bad. That's usually what happens to those ECM motors, the logic part fails leaving the mechanical part unable to run yet there's nothing wrong with the motor workings. Seems like such a waste to kill all of the energy savings that people are getting to price an ECM part to be $900 when any three speed PSC motor is around $250. This is why in many cases, the higher end HVAC systems DON'T really save you money (on utility bills) in the long run due to parts that are very expensive and also a long wait to get. When they work, they do function much nicer, quieter and for a little less on the utility expenses however, just one simple breakdown is so darn expensive and inconvenient trying to source the parts. As in this video, Ted got them up and running best he could under the circumstances. Truly, its very difficult to believe that a motor was that much money and that long a wait in this day and age. Maybe the HVAC industry needs some rules that vital and safety parts must be available from the manufacturers for a good 25 years and in stock to serve their customers. The idea to support them only as long as the warranty term is purely wrong.

*If the installers did what they were supposed to, there will be an internal proper sized deflector diverting supply air towards the 8-inch line, installed at the main trunk connection. There's no way any substantial quantity of air would take a straight tee 90° turn on its own without a deflector.*

Just add a relay, for cool and heat, run a 24 volt common to both relay's, heat terminal off the board to the heat relay and cool off the board to the cool relay and activate the relay's right from the low voltage terminals on the board, that powered the VS motor. Of course you would have run a 120v wire, and just jump 120v from relay to relay, and use the red on the heat relay, and the black on the cool relay, and you're done. 🙂I've done this before, even with the 16 pin VS motors.

That’s one thing I don’t understand. Why can’t they make an option wether you have a psc motor or ecm, they can both work by just supplying 2 connections for psc or molex for ecm. It’s all about the money with these manufacturers and they don’t give a rats a** about how the customer feels. And it makes us look bad if we can’t get them going. For how common ecm is becoming, you would think the supply would be much better now but they never have them in stock and to expensive to keep on the truck.

Nice to see another video from you. Hello Lauren! Where is Lennox made? Is this possibly a good argument in favor of North American - made Goodman? I have to think that supply chain issues for anything coming from Asia have only just begun. You need two small flashlights, one a headlamp. I'd suggest the Nicron N7 as one of them. It has a magnetic tail-cap, and the head pivots, so it can be aimed. It will run on any AA-size cell, from a 3.7V 14500 Li-ion battery down to a 1.2V NiMH. The headlamp could be something like a Sofirn HS-10, which uses a small 3.7V 16340 cell; your hair probably weighs more than it does.
