We review the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 14" laptop to see if this may be a good computer for you! Ultimately it's a good quality, feature rich machine that will knock out pretty much any productivity work you need, and it won't break the bank either. Suffice to say, we recommend it!
Specs as tested:
-AMD 5500U CPU
-16GB DDR4 RAM (non upgradable)
-512GB NVMe (upgradable)
Intro [0:00]
Specs: - Bang for your buck it's hard to beat. Considering the specs and the ability to upgrade the storage if you need, we could see a lot of people being able to benefit from the hardware of this machine. [0:47]
LCD: - A 14" Touch screen with meaningful pen support (and it includes the pen!). It's FHD so it sports a 1080p display, and it's crisp, coloful, and glossy. It's also bright enough for most practical purposes! The only oddity is that for an IPS display, the viewing angles weren't AS great as we've seen on other laptops, but that will by no means be a deal breaker. 4/5 [01:12]
Performance: - Fast! Benchmarks are solid and will perform well on all productivity tasks. You could probably do some light gaming as well as video editing (so long as its 1080 and not RAW). Photographers will also find a place at home with more than enough power to belt out picture editing, and audio editiors can knock out podcasts no problem. 4/5 [02:10]
Look Inside! [03:10]
I/O: Bangerang, Rufio! They give you any and all ports your heart could desire, maybe with the exception of Thunderbolt 4 but for a computer of this price and class you literally get everything and more that the competition deliver on. 5/5 [03:45]
Keyboard: It's ok. Keys are tactile and responsive, however the layout and the size of the keys are a little strange. As a result you'll find yourself accidentally hitting the "?" key and the enter button randomely. Those who are typist perfectionists may find this keyboard a little annoying but its something most people will get used to! 3/5 [05:36]
Trackpad: Big for the price bracket! It ghosts just ever so slightly and has a rather firm click but overall its a solid trackpad with generous proportions and we're pleased with it. 4/5 [06:50]
Speakers: Terrible. They are tinny, quiet, and have no character whatsoever. They advertise Dolby Audio which is not just a slap in the face, but somehow makes them sound worse. Did we mention they're terrible? 1/5 [09:11]
Features: A great webcam with a privacy shutter, Wifi 6, Bluetooth, a Finger Print reader, USB-C Charging, Rapid Charge, Pen Support, 360 degree screen to turn into a tablet, and a backlit keyboard. They packed this thing full of features and all for under $700! They get a 5/5 easily. [10:07]
*Mobility:*. Great materials. It's built solid and should take a beating. Battery life is around 8.5 - 9 hours practically speaking which is more than enough for students and travelers or journalists. It's had some christmas cookies however and clocks in at about 3.3 lbs of weight, but that will be no problem for most people. [11:15]
Who is it for?: This laptop is definitely for business people, travelers, photographers who like to offload and edit on site, non-profits, and students. It's NOT for heavy gamers or 4K video editors. [13:00]

The fun part is that since most tablet designers are using windows-Ink now instead of the ancient old wintab, you can actually install a Huion tablet and use a huion drawing display and a lenovo pen at the same time. No wintab? No broken mixed stylus support. ✊

@@ComputerStuff I respect that, thanks! My desktop PC is on its last legs but I'm not sure I want to continue with the PC platform. I'm just not sure where Microsoft is heading with its OS plane so ... Right now I'm trying to decide between the Acer spin 513 w 3:2 panel, the Spin 514 Vero w 256gb storage, the Spin 714 and the 16" Asus 5601 that's $200 off at BB. I really like the vibe and look of the spin 514 but have seen some reviews that trash the display. Have you seen either the 514 or the Asus up close to gauge how good the screen is? It's that question that is holding me back on those models. (CU trashed the display of the Asus, but best buy reviews are much kinder.) The specs for the spin 714 seam outstanding, esp ports and the 16:10 screen, but I've read complaints about quality control issues. I'm left wondering if the spin 513 might not be the safest bet? Any thoughts you can share are most welcome. And if you have a suggestion that's not even on my list I'd be glad to know. Thx!

@@chrissmith2963 There's a little known fact on some of these machines but unfortunately depending on the factory they were built at you may get a good screen or a bad screen. The ASUS machines typically get a bad screen, whereas ACERs tend to get a little luckier. Were it my money I'd go with the ACER Chromebooks. Vero models tend to have lesser quality screens than there other units, however again that is luck of the draw depending where it was built. In general the reason why I recommend people stay away from Chromebooks is because quality control on them in general tends not to be so good. A lot of Chromebooks suffer with motherboard problems as well as issues with screens. I'd recommend giving the Windows platform another consideration as you'll typically get something a little better in that realm.

I just ordered the 16" Flex 5i for the same price but it has the Intel i7 1255u processor, not the AMD 5500u. The ram is 16GB DDR 4LP 4266 and 512GB nvme pcie4.0 for storage. It does have some upgrades, that this model didn't have like 2k5 IPS screen with 400 nits and thunderbolt USB 4. How much difference is there with the CPU? The Intel has a 10 core, 2P cores with 8E cores. I bought it for my wife and she insisted on a 15 or 16 inch screen. The best deals seemed to on the 14" models, except this one on a 24 hr sale at newegg.

Sadly I didn't have pleasant experience with Lenovo Flex5 which I purchased last year from CASTCO. The charging USB port is misbehaving from the beginning, sometimes it works but mostly it doesn't. Apparently it fails to power up the attached USB device. Secondly the laptop battery gets overheated for no reason. It has happened multiple times when the laptop was idle no applications was open except the browser. The laptop was however charging with battery at +90%. The battery compartment gets so hot that it is hard to touch and can easily damage the LCD if lid is closed. Twice it has happened with lid closed as well when the laptop was on standby. The most unfortunate part part is that there was no response from Lenovo on their portal to my help request. I have been using laptops for the 25 years but this was my first experience with Lenovo and honestly extremely discouraging. I would caution all potential buyer to be very careful.
