We were among the first KZfaq channels to get our hands on the new Lenovo IdeaPad Y910 that boasts an i7-6820HK, GTX 1070, 64GB RAM and 2x 500GB SSD in RAID 0!
Partial transcript:
We were one of the first press outlets to get our hands on a review sample of the Lenovo Y910 gaming laptop. But is it any good? Stick around and find out.
We can't really comment on the unboxing experience because our model did not come in a box. But still - when first opening the Lenovo Y910 up the first word that comes to mind is wow. And that wow is mostly directed at the weight and the sheer size of the unit. But I digress because if you're watching this video then the size and weight aren't a problem to you.
Onto the things that really matter - the internals. The two main features of the device are the Intel Core i7 6820HK and the Nvidia GTX1070 that are inside, but I personally think that they are not the show stopping features that everyone should be impressed about. I think that award should go to the 64 GB of DDR4 RAM taht clocks at 2400 MHz. That award should also go to the drive configuration in the Y910, as it features a 1 TB SSD and a 1TB HDD for storage. The image is displayed on a full HD monitor, notably there is no 1440p panel or a 4K panel in this laptop as is so often the case - but then again it features a 75Hz refresh rate that is notable improvement to 60, but still a long way away from the 120, 144 and 180 nowadays that can be found in external monitors.
The lighting itself is fully programmable, full RGB with 16.8 million colors and has really nice effects to it and a anice glow that does not look faded on some keys and better on others - it just looks good. If you go for the Lenovo Y910 you are sure to impress your teammates and your gaming friends even before you tell them about the specs and performance of the best.
Speaking of the latter the Lenovo Y910 is an amazing laptop when it comes to ingame performance and of course also creative work. We got over 250 average FPS in CS:GO on high in full HD, we got 110 average FPS in Battlefield 1 Beta and an average of 104 in Overwatch. But okay, these FPS numbers are really high, but also unnecessary on the other hand because the panel in the monitor supports G-Sync and the latter automatically caps the frame rate to 75Hz as is the refresh rate of the monitor.
For productivity the connectivity options are important and we can say that the Y910 has that covered. On the left side we find the charging port, a full sized Display Port, HDMI 2.0, gigabit network cad, USB Type C (3.1 with Thunderbolt support) and two USB 3.0 ports. On the other side we find an SD card reader, audio passthrough, and two more USB 3.0 ports as well as a Kensington lock. On the bottom of the unit we find a JBL powered speaker system that has 7 speakers and 2 sub woofers that delivers an incredible audio performance. It has to be said that it can't match a dedicated home cinema setup, but they are the best speakers I've ever had the pleasure of using in a laptop.
Tying the whole product together is the Lenovo Nerve Centre. It is a software kit that has improved immensely from the previous revision found on the Y900. In it we can control the Turbo boost settings, the Extreme Cooling feature that ramps up the - you guessed it - fans. The latter also brings with it a higher amount of noise. It has to be said that the Y910 is not a quiet laptop by any stretch of the imagination, it is quite loud when compared to their business or mainstream lineups, but then again they don't pack an i7, a GTX 1070, 64 GB of RAM or RAID configured hard drives inside. And when hardcore gaming you probably have headphones on and you don't even notice the difference.
Lenovo Y910 is an immensely powerful gaming laptop that never disappointing us as far as performance goes. Quite on the contrary, it kept crushing every game and every benchmark we threw at it. The only thing we would have liked to see is a better keyboard layout and a 120 or 144Hz monitor that I believe will be coming in the next revision as that is the market trend right now.

Wanted to mention that this laptop has an enormous screen! Using the nvidia control panel I overclocked the monitor refreshrate at the retailer (yeah, lol) from 75hz to up to 120hz without any issues whatsoever. I didn't test any further but damn, MSI laptop only held +5hz and after jumping to +6hz the safety mechanism striked and reverted it back. Y910 is a beast, hidden 120hz lads! :D Next time I visit the store I'll check if the screen has any frame skipping which I totally forgot to do today, I can tell the result if anyone's interested.. I recommend however if you're gonna OC it then leave it at 100hz to be safe, but it's not necessary to stay this low as this screen officially supports the 120hz. Just a recommendation of mine.. :) P.S. Before anyone starts complaining, the software has a safety mechanism which tests if your monitor can handle it, if it can't then it'll change back to what it was. (screen will be black for 12s) And after saving the changes, refreshrate will stay the same. It requires a change in windows settings to be 120hz and this also has the same safety mechanism. :)

Good review, i have the Lenovo Y700 and it's pretty good. This laptop is a lot better but the price is stupid. It will cost about $3000 i heard, MSI selling some for about $1700 with GTX 1070.
@DischargedNetworks
@DischargedNetworks 8 жыл бұрын
The Y700 is a popular model and has decent performance if paired with the Intel+Nvidia combo, otherwise it overheats like crazy (as can be seen in my review of it). The pricing is premium indeed and I personally think it is more of a showpiece than an actual model they expect consumers to buy - but who knows, I'm sure they didn't go into it without any market research.
@Tech1Tv

Discharged Yeah Y700 is a good laptop for $1100 now, but the Y910 price is just crazy. I'm not sure if it's going to sell well for $3000 or even more. MSI got some new laptop for $1700 with GTX 1070 that have similar specs. The Y910 going to be really heavy, 10lbs is crazy for a laptop. Lenovo should think about the price before November

MacBook Pro is even worse on price. $3200 for a maxed out one. At least you can do pretty much everything on this thing. I have the y700 one though. That was in my budget. This thing isn't anywhere close to my budget. Too many bills to pay.

The video description here says HDMI v2.0, which is what I also assumed it to be, but from what I can tell from available specs it's actually only HDMI v1.4b. However, it also has DisplayPort of unknown version (probably v1.2) that's almost certainly 4k@60fps capable. My guess is that the promised 4k@60fps gaming experience is through this DisplayPort connection. Lack of seamless external 4k@60fps display capability is a deal breaker in my case, however, and by seamless I mean having not just DisplayPort v1.2 but HDMI v2.0 as well because you'll never know which one you'll need. So, either they will update the motherboard for Y910 in upcoming configurations or I'll have to skip this one as I did with their previous models...

Calling RAM and storage capacity show-stoppers is ridiculous as they vary arbitrarily depending on your particular configuration. I guess the capacity was maxed out precisely because it was a demonstration unit, in order to provide optimal benchmark figures. As long as you've got the money, you can throw in 32GB RAM and a 4GB SSD in most newer laptops. Clearly, the GPU, the screen, the keyboard, the touchpad, the connectors, etc, are what really matters because you cannot upgrade them as easily...
@DischargedNetworks

Yes, I would tend to agree with your point - we were just trying to highlight that when we saw the specs they wow'ed us away (as Lenovo does not usually go full on with their review sample units). We will try to be more careful with our wording in the future, thanks!

Thanks for the review, I'm waiting for my new y900 this next week. Will you compare performance, temperatures and hardware differences between this model and the y900? I would like to confirm some differences to the y900 that you've mencioned: . 7 speakers and 2 subs?.. . Refresh rate monitor (different?) . 4 usb 3.0 vs 2 usb 3.0 . Nerve system is different? Doesn't seem to be.. . Can the y900 be upgraded to 2x512gb ssd raid0 in opposite the already installed 2x256gb ssd raid0 or the system is different from the y910 Thank you
@DischargedNetworks
@DischargedNetworks 8 жыл бұрын
The audio part is the same on Y900 and Y910, the Y910 has a 75Hz refresh rate while Y900 has a 60Hz. All ports are USB 3.0 or better on Y910, the Nerve Center Software just seemed a bit more stable and well-featured on Y910 when compared to Y900. The Y900 can be upgraded to 2x 512GB SSD RAID 0 as there are remaining M.2 slots inside, although I can not confirm whether or not one can order this config from the manufacturer. Hope I have answered your questions!

Discharged you can't get better than usb 3.0 unless you get type c which is a dead port and probably will be gone by next year as nobody wants it because it makes old devices incompatible and I for one don't need I as the speed gains aren't noticeable and I would have to spend hundreds of dollars to replace my external stuff like a mouse

yes, you can get evan 300fps on some games, but the screen is just 75mhz, so you only would see 75fs, so its not that great, I had mine without ssd ( horrible ) but with an shhd, 8gb of ssd and 1tb on hdd, buy a good ssd, no use an shhd, there is almost no difference at all,the keybaord is a mechanical one, but it feel rare, the screen is very good and construction is amazing , Is a good option, but I prefer the msi gt72vr dominator pro, at least have 120mhz, but the Y910 is such a good laptop.

But CPU and GPU is more important than 64GB of RAM, 32GB would probably be enough. Type C does not mean USB 3.1 though. One important thing though, if we could know the load temperature that would be great because laptops like Y50 is pretty much an Unusable gaming laptop as it heats up to a point where you wouldn't feel comfortable about it.

Discharged thanks for the info so the thing is at your ambient im guessing 20 degree C it reaches 84 while playing games so if it was used in a hot country where 35 degree ambient is normal thing it will just overheat and shut down or throttle heavily just like older Y series, just like the one that I'm using!
@DischargedNetworks
@DischargedNetworks 8 жыл бұрын
The ambient temperature was between 25 and 28 degrees C, I honestly can not remember. The laptop goes up to 110 on the CPU and 98 on GPU afaik before it shuts down to prevent damage. That is all without using Lenovo's Extreme Cooling that ramps up the RPM and keeps the machine cooler than usual.
@redwanhasan1721

Discharged Still we are looking at around 90 degree+ on hot environment so I would say gaming is not a thing for this one. Running those poor fans at 100% might damage those fans too, they usually have limited life.

Same. If it's $3,000 I'd rather buy the Aorus x7 dt v6. Gtx 1080 with a 120hz monitor in a laptop.

2,500 here. Also I OC'd Y910 screen (at the retailer earlier today) with nvidia control panel from 75hz up to 120hz and the safety mechanism didn't pop-up even after applying it in windows settings which means it's officially supported by this screen. Not sure why Lenovo didn't include this as default.. I'll probably still keep mine at 100hz just to be safe. (I didn't try any higher than 120hz however). Definitely gonna buy this lappy in a month, all laptops I tested had much worse keyboard etc.

Yawn. There are MANY mediocre smaller less powerful units available. And why TF would one want an i5 with a 1060?????? Now go clean up your bedroom before your mom has to tell you to do so.

sdushdiu 1060 is great, so is a i5 in a laptop. frankly nobody will buy this cause no gamer will use 64 gb ram ever. we barely use 6 in most games tops 8 isn't even maxed out in a single game.

chris kennedy You miss the point entirely. When one can buy an Asus GS502VR with an i7 and 1070 for $1000 LESS, NOW tell us why and i5 and a 1060 for $1000 more is a good deal?????????

Nevermind, at 2799 euros that's $3,695 USD. I would never pay that price for this.

Well, it is not cheap by any means - some competitors offer GTX 1080's inside, but powering the Lenovo brand must cost a pretty penny too and therefore has to be more expensive than brands with lower recogniton.

This is really a lenovo laptop-- even at this level they provide a 5400 rpm hdd. lmao. Don't buy this crap go try Msi or New alienware . Even as a Chinese and a former Lenovo laptop user, I hate lenovo !

The HDD can be replaced, it's not a make or break issue. The real question is whether it's equivalent in overall price and performance to what MSI and other manufacturers offer...
@jaypukki
@jaypukki 7 жыл бұрын
HDD is 5400rpm because 5400rpm has a significant advantage in power consumption compared to 7200rpm. They simply went for better battery life, also the latest 5400rpm drives aren't much slower than 7200rpm these days yes, this was an issue a few years ago..

It has two SSD's in RAID 0, so there is no questions regarding speed - but the storage drives in 2,5" configs are usually 5400RPM, so yes.
