Check out the Lenovo Legion Go from my perspective of daily use. It covers EVERYTHING in my time with this amazing device! I provide demos, examples, optional material, comparisons, tips, fixes, advice, gameplay, and more. I focused on all aspects from gaming to using it as a workstation. I did my best to squeeze the most in here.
There is also a qualitative speaker test, fan noise test, and sleep and wake test.
If this helped you out, SUBSCRIBE for more 🙃
I will do a long-term review in the future. I’ll post updates along the way. I also plan on posting better game settings at some point. The gameplay in here was not at its peak, it was really quick testing. However, it’s still really good.
Thanks for watching my new channel! I hope this helped you out. Have a great week! 😄

Thanks so much! LOL, yea I know that feeling 🤣. I was reading endlessly about it before I finally got mine. I knew I'd keep it, but I was prepared for all the potential negatives I was hearing. To my surprise, it's an absolute beast. You can use this for nearly anything, and then put it in a small bag and just go about your day. I think it's a great investment. I think we're good 🙃

Best review becouse no negatives mention here? You waisted 700 bucks or 800 euros. 😂 Lenovo crap buy nintendo switch next time better for your pocket and gaming.
@ColtonJ
@ColtonJ 6 ай бұрын
For many, the Switch cannot compare. It's also strictly a gaming device. For another $200-$250, you can grab an open-box Legion Go or Rog Ally. If you need the ballpark budget of a Switch, the Steam Deck is there, and it's better as well. It's actually difficult to find a reason to choose a Switch over any of them, unless you specifically want Nintendo games and the smallest size possible. Even then... emulators. The Switch only dominates in multiplayer mode, it is great there. The Legion and Rog have the ability to be used for everyday life, creation, work, business, gaming, etc. The Switch is not truly in the same league. I love my Switch, but it's certainly not pocketable, and the game selection is limited. I rather have the bigger size, bigger screen, drastically better gaming power, and overwhelmingly larger potential and freedom of Windows. Additionally, There's an entire "cons" section that's titled "negatives." Maybe you should research a little before commenting... just saying 🤣

@@MustangCarnivore888 you still have to pay for games. That the whole point, they sell the console at a lost and they sell you 60 to 70 dollars games, with no chance of sales, but with Lenovo legion go, you can get access to cheap steam games and epic games freebies etc.....

Awesome review Colton J. Your analysis and in depth review of this device is deeply appreciated. The screen is what's swaying towards the Legion Go. I am worried about the directional pad for Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1.
@ColtonJ
@ColtonJ 6 ай бұрын
Thanks! I'm glad it helped. The screen is brilliant, but the d-pad isn't the same feel as a full fledged controller. I like it, and I've used it for 2D games (like Last Faith). However, it's not as deep as a PS5 d-pad. If you're rolling your thumb at angles for MK1 combos, it's a little harder to feel the exact diagonal direction you're in, if that makes sense. This is because of the shallow feel. I think it's responsive, but I can see the appeal of a deeper physical feedback because that would help you gauge what you're doing. So far, it works well. It's about a 2.4cm square when the PS5 d-pad is about 2.6cm, for reference (2.54cm = 1"). It's nearly the same. The click feedback is strong, but not loud. I really think someone could adapt to it, but I cannot say for sure since I don't have MK1 to test. Additionally, each person will have their own taste in what pad feels and works best. Worst case, external controller... but that defeats the purpose somewhat 🤣 Good luck

@@ColtonJ It's handled Blender shockingly well. I mostly work with the Eevee renderer, and I find it responsive enough. I've tried some Cycles renders, and it isn't nearly as quick as my desktop (with rtx 3080), but that's to be expected. I'm going to be away from my desktop for the next few months (traveling internationally and I don't want to lug it) so I've been piloting the Legion Go + Pluggable USB4 Dock running my two ultrawides at home (both 3440x1440 100+ hz monitors). It's handled it just fine, I'm comfortable making it my primary machine while I'm traveling, and I'll probably use it for work at home going forwards, too. If only so I kick out less heat into my small office. I'll save the desktop for tough renders and games the Legion Go struggles with (like running Baldur's Gate III on an ultrawide resolution)

Thank you very much, I appreciate it! It's a fairly solid gaming device. After the December updates, it's really on track and smooth to use. I've had great performance on everything I've played, and I've only had an issue with the joystick accuracy within FPS games. But of course, my experience is limited to a small number of games. I think it's a safe bet, and at least you can test its performance within a return period, lol. If there's some specific info that you're looking for, let me know, and I'll see if I can give you a quick answer. Either way, I hope it works out for you.

Thank you! Yea, I am using this for all kinds of stuff outside of gaming. This has been my favorite thing in recent years 🙃. Unfortunately, I just verified that all my folding keyboards do not function wirelessly, lol. If your device lacks Bluetooth, you can usually add a dongle ( something like this: amzn.to/3N20EeA ). Yes, I'm positive they're on their own Bluetooth chip. I actually did the visual demo of this, but I cut it, among many other things, to lower the video time, lol. When the unit's Bluetooth is toggled off in the Windows menu, the controllers function when separated.

Hey, no worries. Whatever makes you comfortable and happy, do it. Haha, yea... I'm sure I didn't optimize correctly, but I'm more concerned with helping people than being big on KZfaq. Additionally, I just loved this device. So, I was happy to spend late nights testing and documenting it. I was also traveling with another style keyboard that was not folding. It was slim and portable, and it slid in small pockets. Here's one that's wired that's like this ( amzn.to/4a1MXqe ) It's not folding, but it's thin and portable like my other. Maybe that would work for you. I've no idea about a docking mix. Although, I have a small hub I use for travel, it's in the description. Thanks again for the comments. Good luck finding your gear 🙃

Hmm... yea I cannot say for sure, but I don't think it runs hot at all. I guess it depends on your definition of hot. Your issue may be noise, not heat. You can change the performance modes though, and it will keep it quiet and cool. RAM is more applicable for Chrome tabs, but Chrome has gotten better as well. I believe it would work well, but you should really sort out exactly what you need and compare the others closely. Good luck with it

@ColtonJ
@ColtonJ 5 күн бұрын
Hey, no I just mean that I don't drop it or handle it roughly. l don't put excess tension on the controllers, so mine are not loose or wiggling, etc. I have turned it up to 30W. Turning up the wattage won't do anything to the system, it should self throttle and protect itself from heat. Also, it doesn't run as hot as it could, from my experience. 30W TDP has provided me no noticeable performance boost. 25W can possibly boost games, it's hard to say, but I don't have enough data to be accurate in saying that. I mainly play on performance mode (20W). Most of my games perform great on that.

Amazing amazing amazing review!!! As an owner of an Aorus Gaming Box RTX2070 (+HP Spectre X360 with Thunderbolt 3) my inclination has been more towards the Legion Go than the Steam Deck when it comes to a potential gaming handheld purchase. Thank you for going through all the uses. I would love to use this as my primary device. The only thing im concerned about is premere pro perfomance. Im currently usling a m1pro base model, and timeline performance is my main concern as i have to scroll through hours of footage fast to remove camera shakes. The m1 flies through them like butter but i dislike the os and the fact that i cant play games.
@ColtonJ
@ColtonJ 6 ай бұрын
I know where you're coming from. I've been in that position of having to work in the OS that doesn't flow for me, lol. The M1 Pro is a good chip, and the way Apple integrates things is somehow magic sometimes. You can look up comparisons via similar things, like the 7840u 780M, but I don't think that will provide real-world usage. Something like this ( www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-amd_ryzen_7_7840u-vs-apple_m1_pro_8_cpu ) I'll admit, I'm not an Apple buff, and I won't pretend to know enough to offer pertinent solutions with it. For reference, I have stronger computers with Nvidia and AMD GPU's that I use for Premiere Pro. Nvidia has CUDA cores which, in my opinion, dominates the boost you get with GPU acceleration. AMD uses OpenCL, and it works fine too. The Z1Ex APU inside the Go doesn't seem to offer anything like this. However, Premiere 24 did have that "hardware" checkbox, as seen in the video. I haven't investigated further yet. I haven't tested it enough. I've done minor 4k editing, and some 1440p. If I get time in the near future, I'll try to edit something larger on my Go, or drag over an intensive project and let it render, on the Go vs on my Nvidia laptop, and see how it works out. Please don't hold me to this because I'm insanely busy 🤣 However, I'll try to do it asap. I may just make a short of it so it can help others.

I'm glad it helped. The unit is very capable. I didn't touch on much back then because I cut a lot of program time out to shorten the, already long, video 🤣. I've run quite a bit on Ableton, and it has had zero issues with low CPU usage. I've not installed Kontakt on it, but I've ran a lot of other midi instruments within dozens of vocal and instrument tracks, many having individual plugins vs using send/returns only. I was going to do a more extensive review of this, but not for a while (likely February). I think it should have no issue handling large tasks. This CPU is a beast. 😈

Looks on paper really promising... But maybe not the best cost effective option... ) ~ As a fan of Metroid-vania's, the fact it's predominantly a gaming system... It will be a while, but I plan on doing that video just for fun, when I get time, lol. For reference, this processor is equivalent to an AMD 7840u. I won't pretend to know all the variations of Apple processors, but I thought I read that the Z1 processor has better single core performance than a few of the M1/M2 variants. There are other factors to consider, of course, but that may help. You may also want the extra screen area of the X13, etc. It wasn't ideal to edit music on the 8.8", but it was still completely doable. I'm also very used to huge, multiple monitor setups, so that may be part of it as well. You're right though, having this with gaming built in is a huge plus 😄 (I too love Metroidvania's)

os power mode at performance in a handheld only burn battery and ramp up the fan i always use efficiency or balanced (in this case turbo boost enabled efficiency so it only use boost if the GPU can put the framerate), if not the CPU is at 95º with a hellish sound from the fan
@ColtonJ
@ColtonJ 5 ай бұрын
At the time of this video, I didn't see much of a difference in heat between modes. On other gaming laptops, I typically disabled turbo boost fully or put it in "efficient aggressive" or "efficient enabled" to reduce heat because they tend to stay pinned high for some reason on some platforms. I planned on doing that here, but found I didn't need to. My CPU stays very cool, far cooler than my laptops. Although, it's possible I don't push mine as hard as others, lol. My fan is also not too loud, in my opinion. The slight coil whine can be bothersome, but I cannot even hear it when the volume is 20% or so. Also, my fan never goes full power or even near the sound/speed as when you toggle on "full fan speed." However, now that you mention this, maybe I will double back and see if battery life increases (without knocking performance) or if anything has changed with various OS power modes. It's always good to optimize, thanks for the info.🙃

Microsoft Office apps work well. They really don't take much power, and this machine can handle them with ease. The keyboard makes working a lot easier too. Not all keyboards will perform the same. Some cheaper Bluetooth keyboards may be poor in quality and connection, but mine are working well. The only issue you'd come across is if the screen isn't big enough for you. You can adjust font size and zoom. I find 8.8" to be decent for writing and basic design. For elaborate things, I would use an external monitor. Cheers

144hz has 14 factors while 60 has only 12, more critically 144hz's factors are clustered around playable frame rates, meaning a game running at 18, 24, 36, 48, 72 will not stutter because those numbers divide into 144 evenly, this is usually why the higher the refresh rate the smoother your games will run. If you had a 61hz display or a 59 hz display, this effect will work in reverse if the game drops frame rate you will see regular stuttering, as those are prime numbers. This of course is without any VRR technology.

With this device, you can put some nice filtering on it to improve the quality a fair amount. Depending on which phone you have, you can play that right on your phone as well. You may not have the upscaling processing abilities to the same degree, but you can grab a controller (or use the on screen ones) and play a lot of PS1 emulators on your phone. Cheers

Yea, I agree. They could've done a few things to maximize the marketing and quality of life for users, lol. I could be wrong, but I thought I read about a dock in the works. Again, that could have been talk. They may be waiting, upon this thing making moves in the market, to approve budgets for further R&D or production. It may come at some point. You can technically use Steam Deck docks, but most don't work well, or at all, because the cable is too short. This one is the only one that seems to be valid for the ROG and may be slightly longer. amzn.to/3RxsBOf However, with any of these, you may have to get a USB 4 extension cable too. On top of that, you want 1440p output at 144hz (HDMI 2.0 should do this) as well as 100w support so it will passthrough enough power when you want to use 25-30W mode. I may pick this one up in the near future, but I haven't needed to dock mine yet. I'm going to pick one of these up right now and I'll throw up a short review, if it works 🙃

Its a dream to play WoW on a handheld. Im only 1 click away of ordering the Legion or the Ally (both order windows are open 😊) Can you or guys give me the last push?! Great video 👍

Think about the top 3 factors you're looking for in a handheld. See which has those or compares the closest. Also contrast what you have with the top 3 differences. If it were me, and I already owned a smaller screen handheld, I'd go for the larger screen over everything else. The screen size is going to be the absolute biggest difference between the 3. For games like Diablo IV, I'd want the most screen size. The removable controllers may be to your liking, but I can do with or without them (other than for packing, that's great). The Rog is the smallest, sounds the best, and has VRR. 🤔

Hey, I think I remember hearing (before this came out) that they were working on a proprietary dock for the Go. I think Lenovo might release an official one, but that could've just been banter. I don't think I'm fully catching your description, but maybe you could try a portable type, instead of a larger stationary type. I tried my hub through my elbow adapters, I believe. I can double check. I put a link to that hub from my video in the description. That has all those ports, and it may be possible to run a small extension or adapter if it's Thunderbolt 3 rated. I'll keep it in mind when I'm trying stuff, next time. Maybe elaborate a little more so I can be of better help. I always like hearing new good ideas to work with as well 🙃

Can we connect it to smart tv? What port use? Hdmi? Hdmi 2.1?..
@ColtonJ
@ColtonJ 7 ай бұрын
Yea, absolutely. You should be able to connect it to any TV with any version HDMI input. At 32:00, you can see the tv connection reference. I used an inexpensive hub (this one: amzn.to/47zZijH ). The monitors I used were USB C connections on each end. . The hub allowed me to use one USB C on one side and it plugs an HDMI into the other. That HDMI cable will go to your tv. My smaller hub is HDMI 2.0b (supports up to 4K 60Hz TV's). If your TV is 4K 120Hz, you'll want HDMI 2.1 on your hub (like this: amzn.to/3RneCuq ). This port is USB 4 on the Go, so it can support up to 40Gbps. Some USB4 devices list that they're limited to single displays only. However, I was able to run multiple displays from the top port and one hub. You could also try a direct cable (like this: amzn.to/49W6gRD ) However, I cannot vouch for that because I've not tested that type. Theoretically, that should work.

Still alot of bugs need to be fixed, in the middle of some games it switches to desktop you need to press on game icon to return to game and the Xbox wireless controller turns off if put to side for a moment or two even tho it's rest timmer is turned off so it always stays on in both steam menu space menu and Xbox app I just can't keep it on for long periods sometimes if you turn controller on it doesn't get recognised 😢. And once device in put in sleep mode pressing the top device button it stops downloading games the screen has to stay on till down is finished and the Hotspot turns off also once in sleep mode? I'm using FXsound because the sound is really low but using this FX sound I get now and again crackling sound I have to exit it and restart really annoying is a update for sound coming out. You happened to catch me in a free moment, so here's my take. A lot of these sound like Window's issues, as opposed to Legion Go bugs. Games don't generally jump from the game to the desktop. You could be setting display or graphic settings in the game causing the desktop to transform as well, this may bump you back to the desktop, if the game overrides the native settings (many do). It's possible that you're bumping the touchpad (you can toggle this off) or a quick launch button. If you're using the quick menu, some games do force that to overtake them and default back to the desktop. This happens on all of my laptops, not just my Go. Of course, that could just be me. The Xbox controller, I'm unsure. The fact that it's not recognized again is leaning me towards Windows. Once you have a device linked, it should reconnect each time. You should try fully clearing it from Window's Bluetooth menu and linking it fresh. It could be you have many devices connected at once, or distance, etc. If you're putting the Go to sleep then the Bluetooth will disconnect. You can try 3rd party connection apps, such as DS4Windows (despite being made for PlayStation, it may help as everything gets recognized as Xbox in the end). I prefer Steam input, and I've never had an error with it. I would have to default in assuming that there's a deeper issue with your controller hardware or battery. Maybe you can A/B test it with other devices for the same length of time. I've used a PS5 controller with no issues on the Go. However, I've never had the Go controllers disconnected (and turned on) at the same time I'm using a PS5 controller. Maybe they're interrupting each other's signals (if you do this). Sleep will generally close everything down, yet it will save your current state in the RAM until the unit's power runs out. There will be no wifi/hotspot/etc. You can use wake-on-LAN magic packet to turn it on, if you enable and setup this feature, but this will probably not allow you to use internet while it's asleep. If you want the screen off, go to Window's 'power & sleep' settings and adjust the screen timeout accordingly. If you're trying to download, set the sleep for a few hours, and set the screen off for a few minutes, etc. Keep in mind the power of the Go may die, if not plugged in. It's not like a console, at least yet, where you can download while in a sleep state. I too use FXSound, and I've not had an issue. I'm not sure what crackling defines, but distortion may be what you're referring to. This would be from you turning levels up far past what they're supposed to be at, and also turning the volume max. If you use FXSound, I recommend choosing a preset and leaving it at that. The source material you're using could also be the cause. I find most games to be loud at 30-50% without a need to ever go higher, so it's odd to hear that it's low. It may not be full, with lots of bass, but mine isn't low. Maybe the crackling is a glitch in some other means. It's possible your games are becoming part of the issue and causing this crackling noise on audio translation. You can also update your sound drivers from the Legion Go website as well. Granted, I've never had this issue, even on the old ones. For the WLAN driver, I haven't had issues either. Some games download faster than others. Some are packaged as a large file or many smaller ones. Some servers are better, pending your location. It could be your ISP, it could be the time of day and general load on servers or your bandwidth from your ISP, it could be who's sharing your connection, and what else is going on at the same time, etc. If there is truly an issue with the Go, you could simply revert 'rollback' to the older driver. I'm sharing comparison experiences with you. Granted, just because I don't experience it does not mean others are not. You may very well have Legion Go issues, and you almost certainly will have different game issues because it's unlikely that any two people play the same exact games. From what you say, I think most of your problems can be alleviated with some minor searching as well as some updates, resets, or even rollbacks. That's one thing with PC's, they always require something to be set, lol. Hopefully this helped you out. Good luck

After a day of updates and installs, the Legion Go is ready to be played with. Noticed something interesting when my wife played Fae Farm. When we got to the main page which state to touch any button to start, nothing was working. Controllers buttons were unresponsive. So, I add the game to the Legion Space and with some additional updates, the game worked through the Legion Space. Is this normal that games work through the Lenovo's hub? Curious. I didn't noticed this with the ROG Ally.
@ColtonJ
@ColtonJ 6 ай бұрын
I've not had that happen to me, but one other person mentioned that they had their controllers go dead. Other than that, I've not heard of it. I'm not sure what game that is, but what platform was it originally running on, Steam? I've never used Legion Space to play anything, yet. I haven't had to force anything through, but that is odd. In Legion Space settings, try going to the controller tab and seeing if you can update the firmware. Also, were the controllers lit up when they were unresponsive? Maybe they timed out, but that would be a bug. Next time, try holding the Legion keys for 10seconds to see if they power back on (if they were off). Lastly, and it may seem simple, lol... When you open a game, it's not always 'on top' and when you click the quick menu, it can sometimes override game interfaces, even though the game appears to be on top. You have to touch the screen of the game to get the controls to function with it again.

@@ColtonJ Thanks for the reply. Fae Farm is a game that runs off from the Epic Game store. Not sure if that has something to do with it. But I was able to run Fortnite without Legion Space and Ally's game hub. So, it might be a very specific issue with that game.
@ColtonJ
@ColtonJ 6 ай бұрын
I've also run games through Epic, and through Epic via Steam, without issues. It is true that some games are just really out there with issues and require very specific settings and interfaces to work. I think it would be best to see if any other games have the same issue which would lead you to believe it's a hardware problem on the Go instead of a software problem of the specific game, and then pay attention to what factors were happening when it occurred. Hopefully it was just a one time event, lol. Good luck with it.

@@ColtonJ The controllers seem to be working overall. The Faefarm game seems to work with controllers when it is running through Legion Space. The odd thing about Legion Space is that sometimes when I log back into the Game Library, the game(s) disappeared and then I would have to re-add them again in order to make it work. No such problem on the Ally. Strange.

I bet they're still working on this integration because the Legion Space app is constantly being updated. My only suggestion is to use Steam. I use Steam as the same umbrella program over all the other games and launchers. It's quite good, and certainly smoother than Legion Space at the moment. Maybe that will be a viable alternative for you.

@ColtonJ
@ColtonJ 7 ай бұрын
That's a lot, lol. It's really different for everyone. Because you said max power and battery isn't an issue, then the Steam Deck isn't really in the running. If it's for girls, the smaller sized body and lower weight of the Rog may be a better fit. I don't know if it's for a surprise gift, but if not... can you have them hold the Rog in store (like Best Buy)? I heard some of them have the Legion Go in store as well, but I cannot confirm that. They may be able to choose which they like the feel of. Both may be too heavy for extended use for some people (double the weight of a Switch). The Legion Go has a large kickstand, but the Rog can clip a tiny one on (3rd party or 3d print). They may need that to balance it. They may really appreciate the controllers disconnecting on the Legion Go so they don't have to hold the device at all. The controllers weigh NOTHING 🤣 They can always use a tiny external controller as well. I chose the Go for the larger 8.8" screen, hands down. If you're asking me my personal choice, the Go. I think it's already hard enough to see distant details in handhelds, even with perfect vision. Therefore, 8.8" is better than 7". The performance will be nearly the same. The Go may have a small advantage in the future with optimization of the slightly better RAM. It's really something that you have to tailor to the person you're getting it for. At least these are some ideas to consider. 🙃 Good luck

Best Buy will give you 14 days to return it. I had a buddy who worked for Best Buy, and he said that sometimes they mark stuff as lower condition just to mark it down lower in price, even though it's like new. I've never had a problem with any open-box item, but it can be hit or miss for some. So, you really should check the physical condition and functions before keeping it. I haven't heard of any widespread issues (like SD card failure), so I think you'll be fine. If it was returned for a defect, it's likely you'll see or hear it quickly. A lot of people just bought it at multiple locations, and then Best Buy failed at delivering it the release day so they went to Micro Center, etc. 🤣 Many are, likely, brand new.

Some games have built in custom deadzones that override things.
