Lenovo’s Legion line of gaming laptops with AMD inside and bright QHD+ 16:10 aspect ratios have been a rocking success. We look at the late 2022 AMD Advantage edition. Thanks to our video's sponsor, TP-Link Tapo Smart LED Light Strips! Link here: amzn.to/3Gqsoa2; use our discount code 10MOBILETECH to save. The Slim 7 is 16.9mm thin and it’s clad in a rigid and understated aluminum casing that doesn’t scream “gamer”. Our review unit has a 165Hz IPS display, AMD Ryzen 6900HX CPU and AMD Radeon RX 6800S dedicated graphics. A fingerprint scanner and 1080p webcam are standard.

A few notes for those considering this laptop. 1. The AMD model of the Slim 7 has only one m.2 slot while the Intel copy has two. 2. The AMD model of the Slim 7 has no USB 4 or TB support, which the Intel has TB4 (40GB/s) 3. The US market models come with the 71 Wh battery while the UK model comes with 99.99 Wh. (Yes you can swap them) 4. The S7 model even with 6800S optioned can be ordered with the 170W charger, while the 3060/3070 models of S7i forces a 230W power supply. Speaking with Lenovo about this they recommend the 230W for the 6800S, though it is not required. CPU/GPU on the AMD can run well at 45W/90W in balanced mode on the smaller PSU. I purchased the S7 AMD 6800H/6800S model and after several days of fighting with it to run properly, I sent it back with the intentions of buying the S7 12800/3070 model instead - except it's unavailable until June 2023. I sent it back anyway. Reasons it wasn't worth keeping (for me). 1. Power configuration out of the box and after all Lenovo updates caused it not wake from sleep. A clean Win11 installation from the Microsoft site, with HDD sleep options disabled seemed to fix this. 2. Win 11 installer can not detect or install driver for the WIFI card and would not allow me to complete Win11 installation without connecting to WiFi for some reason. There is no ethernet port on this laptop, so I needed to us the console "OOBE\BYPASSNRO" line to proceed, then use a 2nd computer to download the driver from Lenovo website to get the computer up and running. 3. The Lenovo recovery software installer failed in two ways to restore this computer to a factory installation. 3.1 The first attempt was to create the USB recovery media using their software, which was unable to connect to servers and download the software. 3.2 The second attempt after deciding to return the computer to factory state and ship back for a refund DID manage to download the software. The computer booted from the USB stick and began the Windows 11 installation, but was never able to load to desktop. I shipped it back to them in this state with a perpetual error and reboot sequence that would notify the installation had failed. 4. Fan noise... For some reason even at no load, this computer would randomly ramp the fans up to nearly 100% and just sit there doing nothing at all with blaring fans. Ater discussing with several members of the Legion discord channel the 7i with 3070 is by far the superior purchase decision. It does cost a little bit more, but you're getting a better performing GPU, 2nd m.2 slot, Thunderbolt 4 and comparable thermals and noise from what the AMD is promising. The AMD system would be so much better if it maintained the 2nd m.2 slot. It would make windows installation, mirroring and data transfer that much quicker and stable. With three completely different nvme to usb 3.2 adapters, it took hours to transfer and mirror a drive to the AMD unit and I eventually just deleted 3TB of data because of how long it would have taken. This wouldn't be required with the Intel... I vote against this particular AMD configuration, especially with what's coming right around the corner with the new 2023 models. 12700/3070 would still a good choice into 2023 at current pricing. I will admit that I did order the Legion 7 Gen 7 AMD Advantage model as a replacement as it's all that was available, but for $2000 USD it's still a little overpriced.

Could you explain in more detail, please, whether the 170W PSU is sufficient for the AMD model and whether this will somehow limit the laptop's power or lead to battery power consumption when plugged in. Or there is no problem and 170W PSU is simple weighs less compare to 230W. In this case, why does Lenovo recommend the 230W? Sorry, I have no knowledge on the topic, but it seems that CPU has 45W limit and GPU has 90W limit which is 135W maximum TDP level and it looks like that 170W PSU should cope with it. Or is it totally wrong to be guided by such naive logic?
@mechalchuk
@mechalchuk Жыл бұрын
@@ommicron1795 Full draw is less taxing on the 230W. Your 135W logic is fine, except the CPU will almost never pull 45W while the GPU is also pulling 90W, so required power is going to be less than 135W. That said, the screen, SSD, etc all pull power too, so you're back up to that ~140-170W range. If you check the notebookchecks review on this device, they share the maximum power draw and draw during games, etc, towards the bottom of the review. For example Witcher 3 on Ultra pulled ~167W, with a temporary maximum of 230.7W. Realistically, yes you can use this laptop on a 170W and there shouldn't be much of a performance loss, if any. I spoke directly with Lenovo about this and they said the 170W would not cause any discernable loss in performance, but would cause more stress on the components. Since the laptop KNOWS what the wattage of a power supply as soon as it is plugged in, I wouldn't expect the computer itself to be taxed at all. That said, depending on how aggressively it is set to pull from a specific power supply, the power supply itself may be operating at a higher load than the 230W would be... All of this considered... If you order the laptop from Lenovo with the 230W supply, you should receive about enough Lenovo reward points to buy the 170W adapter for nearly free. Buying a 135W Lenovo Type-c charger or a 3rd party GaN charger from slimQ might make even more sense if you're concerned about adapter weight.... www.notebookcheck.net/No-Intel-or-Nvidia-required-Lenovo-Legion-Slim-7-16ARHA7-Gen-7-laptop-review.665789.0.html
@mechalchuk
@mechalchuk Жыл бұрын
@@ommicron1795 for comparison though... I switched out to the Legion 7 (non-slim) with the XT 6850M. The maximum load shared between CPU and GPU is 175W, yet the notebookcheck review for that laptop shows an overall draw of 249W in Witcher 3 Ultra and 276W overall. These little NVME drives can pull up to around 20W. I have a 4TB SN850X and 4TB SX8100 in this laptop which is contributing to that 276W figure. There is also a 165Hz, extremely bright IPS panel on these that chews up power, plus your USB peripherals, etc. I have ordered a 240W slimq adapter to see how it performs on the smaller supply. Honestly though, even on battery these are running well. This 6850 is benching a Timespy faster on quiet mode than Performance mode on the 6800S and crushing the 3060. If it was my decision, I would buy the 170W or 135W for travel and leave the 230W at home.

I played for few hours fifa 23 till it crashed. The case was so hot that I couldn't keep my fingers on it. Either AMD 6000 series gpus are too hot or they dont do enough testing in tasks that matter--demanding games. I think rtx gpu is a more reliable choice in a laptop now. That is a shame, AMD could get good sales with some price adjustments.

What is the difference between Hybrid and DGP mode? Can someone explain or link an article. Can't find anything online! Thank you!
@constantinosschinas4503
@constantinosschinas4503 Жыл бұрын
Hybrid uses internal GPU (that is integrated in the CPU) when graphics are not demanding (ie. movie, general task), and switches to external GPU (also called Dedicated, thus D-GPU) when the graphic task is demanding, like a heavy game, video editing, 3D application, and so on. CPU is the main (Central) Processor Unit, used to manage memory, peripherals and calculations and GPU is the Graphics Processor Unit that renders only graphics or very specifically designed mathematical calculations. Most laptop and some desktop CPUs feature an integrated GPU (iGPU) so as not to need a dedicated/external one, in order to conserve space and energy.
@firstNamelastName-ho6lv
@firstNamelastName-ho6lv Жыл бұрын
Yep, and you get between 10-30 more FPS in games in D-GPU mode, since the iGPU is turned completely off and not sucking any power. It's become more standard in gaming laptops since 2022.

Yes but few areas Lenovo has room to improve. They have black and gray laptop options, but gray color is no country to be found. There is no integrated GPU ultrabook with 2 or even 4 RAM slots, they have RAM options for 2.1 ,2.5 and even 3 Kg laptops with expensive A series GPU'S and overpriced HX series CPU's. Many laptops have 13 year old UHS1 speed standard for micro and full size SD card reader. They could have info how much different screen options take Watts also considering combination with GPU. 165Hz, 120Hz, 60Hz, 3840x2400, 2560x1600, 1920x1200, ips, oled.

There are so many good laptops out there, just go down to your local computer store and see what works for you. Gaming laptops usually do not have good battery life for college but this one might be an exception. In my opinion, you are better off just gaming on your PS5 as laptops aren't much better and can be very difficult to get right in terms on in game settings while the PS5 just works most of the time.

Great review. I've had this laptop (well the 7i) for the last semester and it's been pretty awesome. I use it for school, 3d design, and docked at my big 1440p monitor for games. 20 threads is insanely fun, and when you turn on "performance+" mode in BIOS the 3060 goes on-par with the 130w version, so it can really put out frames at 1440p! Also in BIOS, you can specify the fan noise for whisper mode. So if you want battery life, set the noise low. For a tad of performance, set it high. There is also a middle ground for you middle-grounders out there. For all the hate on intel, it's actually very battery efficient to the point where I didn't notice a difference between the i7 and the ryzen 6900 in the X16. There are 3 issues though: it's 1080p, only 1 ram slot, and very poor linux support. The X16 was much better in all these respects, but I really wanted to save that $600 difference. If you are deciding between the amd slim 7 and the X16, get the X16. You won't regret it. Actually, you might if you like keyboards. Lenovo made an amazing keyboard, with a NUMBER PAD for actual productivity!!! . The 1080p is actually OK, since it can max out the frame rate in most games. You won't be able to tell the difference in resolution on the 16" screen. That being said, I would prefer a 1440p screen for productivity where it matters more. Overall solid laptop, great for productivity, but please don't get this for school unless you absolutely need it. It's very light, but not light enough to carry around all day. I wish I had gotten the normal slim 7, non-legion, and a dedicated gaming PC. Alas, I still love playing games on the couch. So fun.

@@relsre Hey thanks! It may be down to my ineptness at Linux, but 1) I cannot get the sound card working, and 2) the laptop cannot enter any sleep state without hard-crashing. I've wasted so many hours trying to fix it, and haven't gotten any closer. Apparently Legion speaker-protocols are notorious for being unsupported, and I just don't have the technical know-how to fix the sleep issues. In addition, fingerprint reader doesn't work and camera support is kind of janky :( I might be fine with it - there are more people worse off - but my friend has a new Thinkpad with absolutely 0 issues. Even his fingerprint reader is fine! It makes me so mad. I keep jumping to the newest kernel, crossing my fingers, hoping something gets fixed! Performance and battery life are amazing, so I do switch to Ubuntu when docked at home. Think of it like a Linux desktop with a huge UPS. Pretty disappointing, but usable.

@@firstNamelastName-ho6lv I see, thanks again for the quick response...and yikes on the two issues you mentioned 😓, but it's still reassuring to see someone sticking with Linux (at least partially) despite that. I had a feeling about issue 1, saw similar reports in other online forums (could also be you?) about the speakers not being detected / not working for other Legion Slim 7 (including the all-AMD) models on Linux. About issue 2, I wonder if that's due to the distro you're using not properly supporting AMD Ryzen's 'new' power states (s0ix vs the traditional s3). Personally, I can deal with the issue by using hibernation instead. 😅 Good to hear about your friend's Thinkpad experience though! If you don't mind me asking, does his model use a dedicated GPU, and does it have an Intel or AMD CPU?

It can charge 100w on each USB C port. There should be an update soon to allow 130w with a lenovo C charger. There aren't any other laptops doing any better.

Ever heard of the sponserblock extension? Also, you can literally double-tap to skip a sponsor.

Very disappointed with lenovo's supply chain. At the rate they've been going, the 2023 version of this will be available sept/oct and they'll just upgrade the CPU & GPU and be done. The Zephyrus g15 is probably getting 16:10 screen & vapor chamber and will wipe the floor with this.

Yeah, love mushy keyboards and proprietary USB charging. No thanks lol.

4:55 “This being AMD you get USB-C, you won’t get Thunderbolt because AMD not Intel.” Thunderbolt’s been royalty-free since March 2019, and Apple silicon features Thunderbolt, so it seems like it’s AMD dropping the ball here.

you also have to consider design costs from the manufacturer. they might not find it worth it when they can call it usb 4

No, AMD has support for USB4 which is up to the manufacturer to implement or not. For example take a look at Asus Vivobook pro x 2020 which has the same CPU as the lenovo but supports full bandwidth USB4.

AMD can technically implement usb4, but they are leaving it exclusively for their high end thin and light laptops. I wouldn't worry about it - what do you need thunderbolt for anyway?

I guess it depends on the brand. I kinda prefer the look of Microsoft and Razer laptops over Apple laptops.

They aren't, but they certainly are less consistent across a wide price band. A thinkpad will obvously have much tighter QC than a gaming laptop. It all comes down to tolerances in manufacturing precision.
