Great review! I have the Lenovo Yoga 720 15.6" (i5, 256GB ver) and it's great it's good in many areas. Only thing is that it's too big. Not in that it's to heavy because it's fine for the weight, but a 15.6" form factor is just not ideal for using Window's Ink, the pen on the screen in tablet mode. I originally bought it for college thinking I could do some light gaming on it, but the Nvidia GTX 1050 2G just doesn't keep up. Oddly enough the fingerprint reader has worked perfectly every time I've used it. I normally just lay my finger on it and not swipe it. Also doing the set up correctly. I think I'll get the Ideapad 720s. It's smaller, lighter, and charges by USB Type-C so then I can also use the charger to charge my phone.

Thank you very much for the review. Your feedback seems to be of someone who actually used it daily and not just unboxed it to try. I hope to get my hands on one. My use would be mainly office but I would need to take it with me for meetings, sessions, workshops, which usually are inside but might have a couple outside. Guess the visibility of the screen is unusable outside yes? Is there anything one can do to reduce this, such as an anti glare screen protector, or anything else that can help boost visibility? Again thanks for your review.

Hi Andrew! Just wanted to correct you on the key travel (i am very picky with keyboards), you were absolutely right about the 730s keytravel (1,1mm) but the macbook pros are not even close to that amount of keytravel, it's a horriffic 0,55mm key travel on the newest macbooks! Lenovo thinkpads have a amazing keyboard with around 1,5-1,8mm key travel, even for the newest ultrabooks. :)

I bought one of these in May and the wi-fi was horrible, just as you described. I did all the software updates available at the time. I bought it as an open box at Best Buy and I bet the poor wi-fi performance was why it was returned. So I bought a new Intel wi-fi card and replaced the Realtek one and now there's no issues with the wi-fi. So I saved a couple hundred dollars getting an open box Yoga 730 13" and then had to spend $35 for a new wi-fi card - it's an awesome little computer now!

I've been shopping around and keep coming back to this model. I am looking for something to just do basic college stuff like write papers and watch lecture videos. I also need full access to excel, hence Windows 10 and not a chromebook. But I'm also looking to do hand written notes. I've heard this is one of the better ones for that, besides the surface pro, but I'm just not a fan of that keyboard. I've heard about some issues with audio, but here it says there is a fix for that? Also, I don't have the best sight, and my eyes would get tired quickly, is the screen really bad, or just not as great compared to some others? The description for this model says it has an anti-glare screen, is this not the case? Thanks!

The Lenovo active pens are cheap and work well. I've since started using an iPad w/Pencil for doodling, and the Yoga 730's accuracy and latency is very similar, which is good. The only note-taking downside on the Yoga for me was that I get sweaty hands, and since the Yoga's screen doesn't have the oil-resistant coating you'd get on a smartphone or iPad, it gets gunked up pretty easily. I think the screen is fine, the only area where it could be noticeably better is brightness, but it gets the job done. It's not as anti-glare as a matte screen, though there are shinier screens out there. The only audio change I had to make was switching it from music mode to dynamic mode. Seems like music mode should sound better, but I found it soft and muddy. The speakers are pretty good for the size/price once set to dynamic.

Dear Andrew -- Am considering purchase of Yoga 730, 15" i5. Like everything about it. However, in looking at user reviews in Lenovo forum and Amazon, I notice dozens of complaints about screen flickering and horizontal black lines thru the video display. Lenovo sales denies existence of any problem. What do you know of this and how do we determine if this has been corrected?
@AndrewThrasher1987
@AndrewThrasher1987 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know much. I haven't had any flickering on mine, and I'm in the process of selling it after moving to an iPad for my digital doodling, so it's unlikely I'll have a chance to encounter any. I've read that at least one person has been able to correct the screen flickering by simply reseating the display cable after discovering it had wiggled a bit loose. That said, I know the 2nd Gen X1 Yoga has notorious and unfixable screen flickering problems, so it's possible it isn't that simple of a fix for everyone. There's enough smoke to make me think there is definitely an issue that affects at least some Yoga 730 units.

im looking for a new up to date laptop that will handle heavy live stream and you tube editing for heavy vlog creations im not into apple or Microsoft will this laptop handle that and be durable in terms of internal hardware?
@AndrewThrasher1987
@AndrewThrasher1987 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend this for heavy live streaming or frequent video editing. It can probably do ok in a pinch, though live streaming may be limited to 720p if you want really steady frame rates, though I haven't personally tested this out, so I'm just kind of comparing based on other processors I've used. Your best performance would be with a desktop, but I totally understand the convenience of a single system that can be mobile and do it all. There will be compromises. In this price range, you can get Dell G3 at $750 with an H-series i5, but for $999 (or $1099 for the G5) they have the 6-core i7, which might well be worth it for live streaming if you are adding in graphics and want to go as hi-res as possible. Wait for sales to buy unless you're desperate. I don't have hands on time with any gaming laptops this year, but I've watched quite a few reviews, and the Dells were strong performers in terms of staying cool. This is good for render times and prolonging the life of the system. Gaming systems are a bit chunky still, but the added room for cooling is worth it if you prioritize performance. Any more thin and light machine is honestly hard to recommend if you're going to be doing a lot of video work all the time. The Dells stood out to me in reviews for its cooling excellence, but many manufacturers have systems at similar prices that will perform very similarly, so there are options.

@AndrewThrasher1987
@AndrewThrasher1987 6 жыл бұрын
Photoshop should be fine, and editing a few images in Lightroom as well. For more than a few images at a time, a more powerful CPU/more RAM would definitely help. You can't really do anything about the CPU without sacrificing a lot of size/weight/battery life. Unfortunately you'll probably have to spend a decent amount more to get 16GB of RAM in a comparable form factor as well. There's a decent chance 8GB of RAM will be fine for you, but I'd have gone for a system with 16GB if I was going to use this as my primary multimedia computer.

I just got it, and it lasts me for about 2 hours browsing the web and watching hulu/netflix. I am planning on returning it tomorrow because the battery life is so short. Also, the screen bounces when I type. There is a huge black bar on the bottom of the screen. The wifi sucks, even after the update I am in an apartment and I frequently lose the connection despite having my iphone right next to it working just fine. All in all there were some huge usability issues for me. If I was able to always have it plugged in and the wifi worked, I could live with the black bar. However, those two things really kill it for me.

to people who are worrying about the battery life, yeah 6 hours might not be enough for a whole-day usage, but i think this problem could be easily solved by bringing along a portable laptop charger (which at least doubles your battery life) and in my opinion is worth the compromise since this computer is amazing and affordable (when compared to macbooks)

Joyce Li I have the 730 and after about 14 months, I’ve given up and am going to replace it. Between loud fan issues, overheating, a screen issue on my original unit which Lenovo replaces (weird green pixels on the 4K display - ended up downgrading to the FHD model to try to get better battery life) and battery life that won’t make it through a day at uni, it’s just not worth the hassle. Carrying a 20,0000 mAH power bank is an option, but they can be quite heavy and adding extra weight to my backpack which already has a bunch of books, the laptop and a lab coat in is not ideal, especially not when on their website they advertise 11 hours of battery 🙃

Hi Andrew, how do you install the Dolby Atmos driver package/app?
@AndrewThrasher1987
@AndrewThrasher1987 5 жыл бұрын
It's a hair complicated. If this doesn't get you there, let me know and I can provide more detail. You'll need to start by downloading the Realtek audio driver from the Lenovo website, but don't install it yet. Next, you'll need to use the Windows device manager to uninstall all traces of your sound card. There will be two listings under "Audio inputs and outputs", and one under "Sound video and game controllers". When given the option to remove the driver, say yes. With those three devices now gone from the device manager and the driver removed, you can install the driver you downloaded from the Lenovo website. You'll need to restart the computer at the end of the installation. After restarting, navigate to the C drive, then the drivers > audio > DAX3 > x64 and run the installer there. That should actually do it. You can try this last step first, but I had to fully remove the automatically installed driver before it worked for me. Good luck and let me know if you need some visual aides.

I’m a student and need a laptop for next year in school, and I’ve decided to go for the 15” 16GB Ram version of this laptop as I want the device to have a bit of longevity and am also interested in some digital art and graphic design along with some light gaming, if you read this comment, could you please let me know of any issues you have found after posting this video that may turn me off buying this laptop? Thanks in advance 😁

@Rize Flair - I have read loads of complaints about Screen flickering and weak Wifi issues. Infact these both look to be design /component issues. Dont know if these were on one batch or all models. Even I am holding my purchase because of this.

Are letters on the keyboard lit? In the video I only see a rim of light around the keys without the letters being lit-up. Are the keyboard letters easy to see in the dark? Also how many nits of brightness for the display?
@AndrewThrasher1987
@AndrewThrasher1987 5 жыл бұрын
The letters are lit, but the bleed around them makes it tough to tell unless you're in an environment dark enough to really need the backlight. I don't have the gear to test screen brightness, but based on other reviews and my experiences with other laptops, I'd say 250-300 nits. Wish I had a more precise answer for you.

Thank you for the review. I just ordered the 13” 730 with the i7 cpu, 16 gb ram and 512gb ssd based on your review and comments. At $900.00 on Black Friday from the Lenovo site it seemed a pretty good deal. Your review will be helpful if I encounter any of those issues and now I’m going to get a pen for sure. Any suggestions on software that worked best for you with the pen?

Lenovo enables power saving functionality on wifi by default, which caused some issues for me. I wrote a guide on disabling this setting at (andythrasher.com/2018/09/08/lenovo-yoga-730-13-slow-wifi-fix/). Hopefully that helps, there may be an issue with the wifi card in yours.

There’s an extra DIMM slot on the mobo, the 8g is soldered but you can add another 8g 2400mz ddr4. This is the case on the 15 inch, I’m not positive on the 13in though, should be in the technical specs on Lenovo’s website

Hi. I am considering this unit for my work, digital drawing and graphic design. Large files on photoshop. Is it great for graphic work and how about the pen responsive? And i watch another review, that heat vent can be problem because the location under right the screen. Have you find that kind of problem? Thanks
@AndrewThrasher1987
@AndrewThrasher1987 5 жыл бұрын
It will do well for Photoshop, especially if you spring for 16GB of RAM. I definitely noticed the head exhaust some when using the pen, since it's at the bottom of the big bezel, which was a natural place to rest my hand. It never bothered me, but I was also using it for much lighter work than you're talking about, so your workload might cause it to happen more often and get hotter. Hard to say for sure.

I'm very particular with build quality, so does the metal feel any good?
@AndrewThrasher1987
@AndrewThrasher1987 5 жыл бұрын
The edges are noticeably sharp. Not dangerously so, but it's noticeable. The metal feels nice, though my iron grey model at least has a noticeable fine grain metallic finish. I have also gotten a few scuffs on the edges, since I flip it around regularly at my desk. Not sure if the finish on the silver model is higher quality, though I'm quite confident if nothing else the edge scratches won't show as much. In conclusion, it feels nice but the finish of the metal is noticeably less premium than on my black iPhone 7, which is also more resilient to scratches.

How about fan noise and heat? Thanks for review!
@AndrewThrasher1987
@AndrewThrasher1987 6 жыл бұрын
Heat hasn't been an issue thus far. Seems to max out at around 80C spiking during normal usage, which is quite a bit lower than my X1 Carbon with an i7. The fan can be noticeable when it's in tablet mode, as fires toward you, but it seems to be pretty quiet. That said, I've rarely been bothered by fan noise (the X1's fan doesn't bother me for example) so I may not be the best judge.

Since you've had experience with both, what do you prefer? X1 or 730?
@AndrewThrasher1987
@AndrewThrasher1987 5 жыл бұрын
The X1 for sure. The build quality feels better (more rigid, no sharp edges) + matte screen + better keyboard + extra ports. There are a few areas where the Yoga is better (better speakers, bigger touchpad, doesn't collect fingerprints like crazy) and obviously if you want the touchscreen/pen input, the standard X1 doesn't have it. I'd probably recommend the X1 unless you know you want touch/pen input or you are simply looking so save a few bucks.

Im looking for a laptop to use on the go so battery must last. For what Ive seem mx 130 mx 150 mx 110 all use a lot more power compared to hd or uhd 620 so I will avoid any mx to max out battery duration. Ive seen i7 8550u 16gb ram 512gb ssd uhd620 model and it claims 11.5 battery hours but on some reviews they say 6 hours. Im gonna study the subject more before pulling the trigger on a big purchage..
@jonasbay624
@jonasbay624 5 жыл бұрын
the 11.5 hours is only achievable under the ideal conditions (low light, light work, excetera) the 5-6 hours is the battery life under normal conditions your right! the mx graphics use dedicated RAM which needs more power and the hd and uhd use the intergrated RAM so it uses less power

Hi Andrew, I just got Yoga 730 15'' and I did a clean install. A lot of drivers were missing but I was able to get most of them back. However I couldn't get the fingerprint driver to work even if I install the driver downloaded from the lenovo website. Did you encounter this issue and how did you solve it? Thanks

Minute after I left this comment I discovered this: forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Synaptics-WBDI-SGX-disabled-Fingerprint-broken-on-P71-after/m-p/4117210#M74584 So the solution is to update the Intel Software Guard driver.
@AndrewThrasher1987

Hmm...I didn't have to install anything manually for the fingerprint scanner, as Windows update took care of the driver. If you haven't caught up on Windows updates/checked for updates in the Lenovo Vantage app, start with that. As I mentioned in the video, my fingerprint scanner doesn't work that well, so it's not a huge loss. That said, it should at least let you set it up. Was it working before the clean install?
@Andy-ko3zt

Yes it was working with the factory default. And although it doesn't perform as well as the fingerprint scanner on my OnePlus5, Windows hello still works fine with it.

Is the system stable and runs smoothly compared to your X1 carbon?
@AndrewThrasher1987

Yes, I can't tell any difference in performance between the two. I'm sure the X1 Carbon's i7 would win in benchmarks and video rendering type of stuff, but for Chrome and basic Photoshop, they feel exactly the same. Haven't had any stability issues on either so all good there as well.

If you haven't turned off the power saving option for wifi, I'd recommend giving it a shot, as it did help with my initial wifi issues, and I haven't had any since. I posted a guide with screenshots on my website (andythrasher.com/2018/09/08/lenovo-yoga-730-13-slow-wifi-fix/) that goes over the pretty short process. If that doesn't help, the only last thing I'd probably try is a clean install of Windows. If that doesn't do it, probably time to have a conversation with Lenovo support.
