Hi Sander, thank you so much in making three videos in the Lenovo Yoga 730 15.6” laptop. You are awesome. It is really not that many people making review on this product. I also brought this Lenovo Yoga 730 15.6” (i7-8565u, FHD, 16G RAM, 512 SSD). Let me also share my comment here: - Battery life: The battery life is average+, but far better than I expected and most reviewers stated. I disabled many unnecessary programs on the startup. For generally web browser, MS Office, and KZfaq video viewing combination, it can have nearly 6 hours with the display setting to be “brightest”. - Heat: Heat control is very very good. (It is this reason that I consider this laptop and will not consider HP.) For normal MS Office usage, it is very mini noticeable warm. For watching KZfaq video, it is just slightly warm. For light gaming, it is a little bit hot, but acceptable and expected in small chassis laptop. The heat control is even better than my Yoga 720(13.3”) one which will get a bit burn when plays the same game with the same setting. - Fan noise: Fan noise control is very well. Fan was only on when the laptop was first setup, on games or on other heavy loaded works. It is not even a case that I can remember that it suddenly turns on itself when I am just working on MS Office. - Keyboard: The keyboard is crisp and solid, but as the most reviewers said, the key travel distance is short. (Personally, I have used Yoga 720(13) for a year, but on this 730(15) keyboard, still need time to get use to it.) - Throttle and the GTX 1050 4G GPU: The games that I play are very light loading. While playing this game (Romance of Three Kingdom XIII, store.steampowered.com/app/363150/ROMANCE_OF_THE_THREE_KINGDOMS_XIII__13/), my 720(13) (i7-8550, 16G RAM, Intel 620 GPU) throttle occasionally; however, it can play the game with normally quality CG setting. However, on Yoga 730(15), I need to adjust the CG setting to be “low” in order to have the game run normal (not freezing) [Very interesting, both my 720(13) and 730(15) have intel 620 graphic card.] The GTX 1050 4G GPU card is supposed to be automatically kicked on when gaming. However, I check GPU usage. The GTX 1050 was 0% usage. (Well, I don’t know whether that game is too light that it even won’t wake the GTX GPU up.) - Changed, the NVIDIA “Preferred Graphic Processor” Global Setting to “High-performance NVIDIA processor”. Restarted the laptop, there is still 0% utilization on the GTX. - Need to change the NVIDIA Program and add the game in order to make the GTX GPU run. However, gaming in normal CG setting will still freeze. The good thing is that I have not seen the 730(15) throttled yet, at least on that specific game, and the heat level is pretty ok, even better than my Yoga 920 4K. Sound: The sound is average. I saw some reviews. Some reviewers said it was above average; some said it was bad. I will say it is ok. The sound is clear. However, it feels like the sound is not “rounded” enough and puts too much effort of making it loud. The speakers are in to back of the laptop. Indeed, there is so much space on the side of the keyboard. Why not Lenovo make the speaker in the front. Display: The FHD display is not stun, but it is ok or above average, depending on how much you paid for the laptop. - Finger print on touch screen: The finger print situation is better than I expected. I thought that it would be as worse as my 720(13) FHD. The finger print situation on my Yoga 920 4K is pretty decent, and the print is not too obvious. The finger print situation of the Yoga 730(15) FHD is in between Yoga 720(13) FHD and Yoga 920 4K. (May be it is just my personal mis-judgement. The 720(13) FHD and the 730(15) FHD should be using the same screen technology?) Sander, agree with you that there is really not much alternative for the i5-version of this laptop “in the USA”. For Hong Kong, there are whole lot of alternatives, as of today (2018/12/14), Yoga 730(15) i5 version is HK$12,998 (around USD$1,600). For this price we can get a Huawei Matebook X Pro most top end i7 model. Yoga 730(15) i7 4K version for HK$17,998 (around USD$2,100), we can simply buy a Surface book2 15” i7, 256G SSD, for HK$17,888. Really helps me to make my decision whether to buy this thing or not, which I am defenitely going to do now x) looking forward to the throttle stop video, maybe consider undervolting the gpu as well? Saw a few videos about it improving thermals and maintained time on maximum clock speeds on different laptops. Maybe in combination with some thermal Grizzly kryonaut since it should have waaaay more thermal conductivity and is pretty easy to do since the laptop is pretty user friendly. Ive heard alot of peoples laptops been disconnecting from the internet at uni lately. My laptop has been too. And interestingly yours too?! Do you think they just rolled out a bad uodate? I only noticed bad wifi connectivity after updating wifi driver.

Mine arrives next week and I'm very apprehensive that the fhd display may seem too dim or inaccurate for photo editing, also I'm disappointed to learn that it won't charge over the tb3 port. Cyber monday prices were too tempting not to risk a trial run though!

I got this laptop over the summer and the fans sounded like a kettle as soon as I started anything basic like Google Chrome. The fan noise was ridiculous and technical support didn't help me fix it either. Ended up returning it. Mine had an i7 and 16GB of ram. Yeah you could say I can undervolt the CPU or whatever but I think that if I am paying $2000CAD for a laptop I shouldn't be tinkering around with the hardware to make it work. It's good to see you're liking it though I could've got a bad one.

What do you tink about the pen usage? I usually take notes on a surface (4 years old) with the microsoft pen and would be willing to replace it for this

However, in looking at user reviews in Lenovo forum and Amazon, I notice dozens of complaints about screen flickering and horizontal black lines thru video display. Lenovo sales denies existence of any problem. What do you know of this and how do we determine if this has been corrected?

Great review! I've watched all your videos concerning this laptop and actually bought one for myself. Unfortunately my first unit had a lot of background light bleeding and had to send it back. I'm currently waiting for a replacement. I know that IPS panels are known for this issue but I'd like to know how severe bleeding is with your unit and has it caused any problems such as loss of contrast etc...?

I bought this laptop 3 years ago and have used it for gaming with no issue, thou now i was looking into using for art, i was looking at the active pen 2 bc this is is enabled, in three years no issue yet, the one bother is the lack of hardwired internet port thou i have been using android phone tethering with outstanding result. I'm still watching your video, but this is a great laptop, when i bought it some places were charging 1,400$ for it, i gave 700$, also i haven't had any issue not even the Bluetooth screen flicker. no screen flicker, finger prints are duh, bc you touch....silly, and i have nvr used in tablet mode, thou i may soon bc I'm getting into art soon i believe. i did shut lid harshly once and that clip cover on the right side always comes loose, but some glue will fix that and that was my bad, not it's. magnesium alloy case, this is a great pc, imho. i really, think its mag alloy case not aluminum. as far as the heat goes, i use a nice lap-desk that i got from Staples, i use 2 dice, like regular dice under the rubber foot on the back, it doesn't suffer, good airflow...just saying from experience, best laptop i have personally ever owned, but i really cannot afford better. this is a great pc. ps, i have used the same logitech M325 mouse since the beginning.

Hey sander, I got the same laptop (i5, 8gb) which I really like but when I use it for something a bit more power intensive, the fans kick in (which is totally expected), but the problem I'm having is that they're making this high pitch noise (it's like faint whistling) when they start spinning which is very annoying. Was wondering if the fans on your laptop do the same or if they make the usual airflow noise.

Are you able to fold the laptop backwards so that the back of the front panel touches the underside of the bottom panel? You said something about powerful magnets, and I immediately thought of what might happen if the laptop is scanned through airport security. Is their a risk to the laptop due to those powerful magnets and airport screenings? One more thing: will an intel graphics card perform as well as an Nvidia card?

recently purchased the l390 yoga i5 with 8gb ram, but considering the 730 15" for the dedicated GPU, just wondering why this device is so much cheaper while having more features such as the GPU, larger screen, thunderbolt connectivity, higher pressure sensitivity...etc, are there inherent flaws with this device? i have heard many complaints regarding the screen flickering and wifi connectivity which initially held me back, would like to hear your feedback now after a good year, thanks.

Hi, Sander. Thanks for your review. I am sorry you didn't mention its fan noise (probably you haven't gotten) and I do not agree with your points on battery life. I got my new (replacement) 15-inch Yoga 730 just five days ago. The first one had SDD issue and had unbelievable fan noise even when I had 3 or 4 tabs open on google chrome. The new one has the same problem, it has continued fan noise…..for any updates or during my R/MATLAB session, the fans are blowing like a whistle. Trust me it was so annoying for the person who sat next to me during my Matlab programming class. It was like a train was passing next to my building. Just surprised, what kind of product does Lenovo launch in the market in the name of a premium product. Now when I am downloading a simple program like adobe reader fans go wild. So disappointing…. Most importantly, Lenovo lies about product’ battery life. Although they mentioned maximum battery life was 8-9 hours, but the true maximum battery life I got 3.21 hours when I just open my Gmail and KZfaq on google chrome. So, it's not even perfect for my quarter-day long class work. I don’t understand why they mentioned that false information. No doubt, it looks gorgeous and seems user-friendly and I like this laptop. Is there any solution to this disturbing noise or battery life? I hadn’t had this problem with my Toshiba and Dell XPS. There is no way I can use this if the fans are that loud. Would appreciate if you guys can respond.

I'm pretty sure the VRMs are actively cooled in this Laptop and not the RAM. Even in high end water cooled desktops it's much more likely to find water cooled VRMs (CPU and/or GPU VRMs) than water cooled RAM.

hi. well i am going to be programming and i need a laptop to suit my needs. this laptop basically covers the spec requirements for me. i just wanted to know if there is any screen wobble and how sturdy is this laptop? im considering this if not the asus zenbook 15 , the one without the thunderbolt 3.... the asus zenbook has actually a good reputation for having quiet fans and the thermals are great. hope you can give me some advice. also , i do light gaming on my laptops, which is why the lenovo 730 at where im from comes with a gtx 1050 4gb is a blessing compared tp the max q version with 2gb on the asus. hope you can give me an update on the average batt life in 50% brightness , together with the thermals and fan noise. thank you very much once again!

However, my biggest concern is the screen flickering issue, almost everybody seems to be complaining about this issue. Can you please share what you know about this particular issue? have you experienced it yourself yet?

No CPU/GPU throttling? What laptop are you using because mine does throttle, quite a bit.

Sander is it possible that the Lenovo 630 has a slightly better display. Had the 630 and returned it, was too basic but it seemed to have a slightly better, brighter display than this 730. The 730 has a great display though and I'm very happy with it overall.

I think I will spring for this instead of an iPad Pro (I am a musician), as I need something big enough to kinda completely display an 8.5"x11" page (15 inches of screen size at 16:9 are good enough). I also need touch sensitivity with pen support because I plan to annotate my music scores with something else than my damn finger haha

I returned mine because 1: for such a high configuration and not doing any high demand works with it, the fan noise and occasional high speed is annoying. 2: the screen flickered (dimmed and brightened continuously not a drastic flickering). I don’t play video games so this laptop should be very quite. I am waiting for a replacement. How can I reduce the speed of fan or whatever makes the fan go crazy? Any harm to the system?

Hi Sander, I'm comparing this laptop to Dell Inspiron 7000 15inch (the 2019 model) and I'm torn apart, since this one seems to have a better display (Inspiron doesn't even have IPS but WVA, don't know if the difference is noticeable), but on the other hand Inspiron has a number pad.. I don't get it why all 15inch laptops don't have one, this should be by law! 😂 I don't care so much about the graphics card - I wanna use it for hobby photo editting, so even an integrated Intel card should be fine, as well as 8GB.. So my main concerns are the display quality, fan noise, heating issues, and solid (but not stellar) performance. Doesn't have to be 2-in-1. What would be your opinion? Many thanks 😊

I have recently bought one of these with the i7. This is a very nice machine except for one ongoing problem. of dropping the internet connection every 3 to 5 minutes. I'm trying to find a fix without the need to send it back and wait for return. Have tried the usual KZfaq fixes without success.

I know it's only been a month, but do you see any flickering issues? I've seen a few horror stories and worried about buying one.

This could play battlefield 4 at medium settings 1080p at around 50 fps! I tried it.
