Find launching your boat stressful? You aren't alone as many people feel that a boat launch as not a fun place to visit. Truth is, a little prep work in advance can make it easy sailing. Check out these boat ramp tips to make your next visit less like the Qualified Captain insta stories. In this video we will cover:

Definitely check your oil. But, check it before you leave the house.

I was looking for checklist. Something similar to the steps a pilot would take on the tarmac. Something to do EVERY SINGLE TIME at a boat landing. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a ton!

There are some really good pdf chart/table style checklists. I'm thinking of laminating one and keeping one in the glovebox of the tow vehicle and one in the boat

I like to turn the blower on before backing the boat and truck up on the ramp. This ensures there are no vapors in the engine compartment when I start the boat (sterndrive boats). Also, we rarely power the boat on and off the trailer. We have long launching/recovery lines tied to the bow and stern of the boat and someone is walking down beside the boat as I'm backing the trailer into the water. Once we reach the half-way launch point and have removed the winch line and safety chain, I hop back in the truck and back the boat up until she floats off the trailer. The people tending the launch lines keep her in place until I park the trailer and make my way back to the launch.

Great tips in this one for a safe fun day on the lake. One thing though..those of us in cities in the GTA, can find we’d get screamed at and anger people, if we were to be on the ramp doing all this you’ve described. (This does NOT apply to jet ski owners. They seem to have NO courtesy for anyone). Thanks for sharing this one. 🇨🇦👍🏼

Personally, I think cranking an engine will throw oil up into the oilways and give you a false reading on the dipstick. If you must do these things, check the oil first and then crank... :-)

Interesting perspective. I think the point is more to check for enough oil vs an exact level. Point taken though
