Challenge accepted. Just wait till I get a 12 string. I've played for like 20 minutes on one I think Leo's 6 string technique translates pretty easily to 12 string and is maybe even easier assuming no thumb pick. I won't do stealing but I'll do Last Steam Engine Train trying to aim for this bpm.

Leo is from Minnesota. He has more soul than about 10 or 12 normal guitarists :) Geez, just look at his face -- he LOVES playing !! Not to mention his truly magical hands. Love live Leo !

Saw Leo 3 times during the 70's before his tendon injury and he was phenomenal every time. I saw over 200 live acts during that period and some I've forgotten, but Leo was unforgettable. Great musicianship. For me this is where Bluegrass meets Folk music. Today's so called Country music is dressed up pop with a twang. No comparison.

Yeah...and his new playing style is probably just as amazing as how he played back then...just not nearly as aggressive. His right hand technique is simply unmatched. He just holds it over the strings and makes magic happen. The first time I saw him live a few years ago I was expecting him to be a shadow of what I'd heard on his early albums...and he absolutely blew my mind. If I played guitar and studied every day for the rest of my life I could never play like that.

He's still just as mindblowing though...his finesse with the slide is unmached IMHO. And when you realize that he can still play like he does despite thoroughly destroying his hands with his aggressive technique in the early days its even more impressive. Plus his incredibly dry wit is still as razor sharp as ever and that's as much fun as watching him play. By far the most entertaining live performances I've ever seen...can't imagine what he was like back in his heyday.

Seen Leo play many times. He always exceeds expectations. People who complain that his music drifts into the territory of unnecessary and mindless melody, simply do a poor job of camouflaging their own jelousy of the greatest six- and twelve-string guitairst of all time.
@TIO540S19 жыл бұрын
Greatest of all time? Maybe on the 12 string a case can be made but why make that case? There need be no competition. The first of several times I saw though, he was literally to drunk to complete a song. As in "literally." He said he was having a baby born THAT NIGHT and then launched into several long, meandering monologues about death. Brian Bowers opened for him and was spectacular. I had high hopes for Kotte - I'd worked on several of his songs, played "Greenhouse" endlessly. It was a huge disappointment. I gave him another chance though and it was excellent.
@belaghoulashi9 жыл бұрын
All you gotta is listen to "Louise" off My Feet are Smiling...every note is impeccable . Every note has the right feel and the right "taste" for the song and for his vocal interpretation. He doesn't need anybody else, he doesn't need another single musician for what he's doing. Every note tells part of the story, and the song and the story is complete, just the way he performs it. Adding anything else would just take away from the full final effect...and he knows that. Overdubs, other parts, other musicians...they would all take away more than they could add, he doesn't need them, and he knows it.

I know the feeling - you go to see a hero in concert and they just don't deliver. I had that experience with Miles Davis in London in 1973. But, really, I've never been fortunate enough to see Leo live, however, on all the evidence I've seen he is phenomenal. Of course, I don't believe there is a best guitarist in the world, when you have such diverse players as Leo Kottke, Joe Pass, Sharon Isbin, Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton, etc, etc, how can there be?

I saw bands and solo artists at various venues in the bay area from the late 60's to the early 70's. Who, Hendrix and obviously people like Fahey, blues , jazz, blah, blah. Kottke, at his height, before the hand injury, was the most original artist of them all. he was stunning. Find the interview of the great Fahey describing Kottke. He knew there was something new under the sun.

This clip still kills me. It sounds like a person recorded this, then played it back sped up lol. Amazing player. Very tough to beat that continuous hard hitting string of riffs without losing any rhythm. Fitting in he only could do this for a brief time in a way. Ultimately I think he ended up better off changing his technique not only to continue playing, but he actually got a little more control seemingly sans picks.
@murphicus16 жыл бұрын
After being discharged from the Naval Reserve, Kottke attended St. Cloud State University in central Minnesota where he was known for skipping class and instead going to the auditorium and playing his guitar for hours on end. Lots more good info on his Wikipedia page Now, Jonny Lang (Jon Gordon Langseth, January 29, 1981 in Fargo, ND) Lang started playing the guitar at the age of twelve, after his father took him to see the Bad Medicine Blues Band in Fargo..." is a head scratcher for me!
@TIO540S115 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's unfair. Leo would probably agree, I'm guessing. It's safe to say no human on earth could play a 12 string as we're seeing in this video. Leo Kottke is a brilliant artist as both a composer and a performer. This was true in the 70's and is still true, but he can't do this anymore. Neither can anyone else,

This is obviously incredible. No need to injure himself on a 12 string. It just sounds muddled with the no sharp attack. Again the playing is superhuman and soulful. Jist saying a 12 string was the wrong instrument for this song.

Well, according to Wikipedia: Leo Kottke (born 11 September 1945, Athens, Georgia As a youth living in Muskogee, Oklahoma... (Hmmmm... interesting musical roots...), Kottke played trombone and violin before moving to the guitar and developing his own unconventional picking style. A mishap with a firecracker permanently damaged his hearing in one ear, a condition that would be exacerbated during firing practice during his service in the United States Navy Reserve.

That is not really fair. Let's keep in mind Kottke is now in his 60's... you can't really expect him to play in the same way he played 34 years ago! He is bound to slow down somewhat. Plus ,he no longer uses picks- that is going to change his tone as well. He can still play rings around most fingerpickers out there now.
