Lyrics:
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind
Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On Our Lady of the Harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind

I remember watching a documentary about a homeless man from Montreal who knew Leonard Cohen. This man ended up in the west of Canada, in Vancouver, and ultimately in a mental hospital. He needed cash for cigarettes or something, and told the nurses "please call my friend Leonard Cohen and ask him to send me some money". The nurses probably thought he was lying, but they called anyway. Leonard sent this guy some money! Not only was he a millionaire songwriter, but he had a huge heart, befriending someone who most of us wouldn't give a minute to. Thank you Leonard Cohen. You were a beautiful soul.

As a teenager, this song comforted me through lonely and desparate nights. It was like a blueprint for a life I was eager to live. One of love, adventure and connection. Now that I've attained these things, my sadness stems from loss. Still, I am in such a better and more hopeful place than when I first discovered this song. I am so grateful for that and for this man's incredible music.

I was a 15 yo schoolboy from England, attending a summer sailing school at a small village in Bretagne, Francais when I first heard this song, beautifully sung by a French teen with a guitar. A year later my very first girlfriend and I would listen to the Songs of Leonard Cohen album all the time. Now, 50 years later and continents away I still cherish those times. Leonard has a special place in my heart. He touched my soul as a teenager and that has never left me.

Absolutely. As I was telling my best friend the other day, we got more than "tea and oranges that come all the way from China.". Dude, we got our stimulus checks from China. They have the lowest interest rates at their banks on the planet. But Suzanne was probably the most poetic song to come out of the '60s, and that was a helluva poetic era. Having been a teenager then, I haven't seen anything like it since. Cohen and Dylan are still the top folk singers even today.

Heard this for the first time in many years recently on the way back from music practice. The combination of Leonard Cohen's deep, laid-back voice, his thoughtful guitar, the soft roar of the car engine, the trees and fields and farmhouses standing still in the last light of the June evening, the moon bright in the darkening east, and just a few slender stars visible, was a very special one. One of those moments to visit over and over again. I want to travel with him, I want to travel blind...

1968 my friends gave me Leonards album as a birthday present, they laughed and said >It´s you he sings about ... < Like so many times before we sat in my room and drank tea together listening to his songs and long, long after they left I continued listened to my song for hours in time - 16 years old I saw him first on the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 and afterwards he followed me all through my life on 7 other concerts in Paris, Berlin, Athens and 3 times here in Stockholm - it was 2013 I saw him last when he was almost 80 years. At his death I decided that this song should be played on my funeral

Everything a man gets he gets from his own endeavours, he has built the world, he lays the bricks, quarries the stone, builds the machinery, builds the roads, digs for the oil, works the power stations, the list is endless. Women are passengers in that process and exploit the men, the man's lot is of endless burden. The woman's lot is to be looked after. We have as much flowery speech as we want, but it's her children not his and if you ever transgress or upset the woman, you will find this out. Men are exploited by women and that's why many of them are broken by middle age. And that is the truth

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river You can hear the boats go by You can spend the night beside her And you know that she's half crazy But that's why you want to be there And she feeds you tea and oranges That come all the way from China And just when you mean to tell her That you have no love to give her Then she gets you on her wavelength And she lets the river answer That you've always been her lover And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you know that she will trust you For you've touched her perfect body with your mind. And Jesus was a sailor When he walked upon the water And he spent a long time watching From his lonely wooden tower And when he knew for certain Only drowning men could see him He said "All men will be sailors then Until the sea shall free them" But he himself was broken Long before the sky would open Forsaken, almost human He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone And you want to travel with him And you want to travel blind And you think maybe you'll trust him For he's touched your perfect body with his mind. Now Suzanne takes your hand And she leads you to the river She is wearing rags and feathers From Salvation Army counters And the sun pours down like honey On our lady of the harbour And she shows you where to look Among the garbage and the flowers There are heroes in the seaweed There are children in the morning They are leaning out for love And they will lean that way forever While Suzanne holds the mirror And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you know that you can trust her For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

I listened to an interview with Suzanne. She and Leonard never had sexual relationship. Though she said, "He was a very seductive man." They were very close, for how long is unclear. Leonard's father stressed reading the classics. So he was very cognizant of the powerful nature of the muse. Suzanne said, "What we had was more intimate than a sexual relationship. If we had sex, we would have lost that." This is what Leonard is articulating when he writes, "You've touched her perfect body with your mind." Today, we ridicule men with close platonic relationships with women, and we villify women. With respect to women, we suspect them of taking advantage of the man or stringing him along as a spare. This is expressed with respect to men that he must be gay, or it is an unrequited love, or he is in the 'friend zone.' This reductive attitude is a product of our simplistic attitudes about the complex nature and types of intimacy, and the sad fact that few people have read any of the classics. Yet, the muse is very real, Edie Sedgwick was a muse to Warhol and Dylan, Linda McCartney, Yoko Ono, Zelda Fitzgerald - Hemingway was close with an unamed woman all his life, and, of course, Suzanne.

I agree with all of this, and that line in Suzanne about them mutually touching each other with their minds (only) & what he said about this relation being so intimate because of its lack of sex really resonates with me right now. Not to get too personal / detailed because this is KZfaq & completely uncalled for, but I was thinking about a man I relate to romantically & only see sporadically (we live on different continents) and how much stronger our relationship would become if we refrained from sex. To put in the effort and connect wholly through words (a communion of minds), rather than taking the easy option of consummating that (halfway) mental connection with physical touch...

And I knew it was a song about Montreal, it seemed to come out of that landscape that I loved very much in Montreal, which was the harbour, and the waterfront, and the sailors' church there, called Notre Dame de Bon Secour, which stood out over the river, and I knew that there're ships going by, I knew that there was a harbour, I knew that there was Our Lady of the Harbour, which was the virgin on the church which stretched out her arms towards the seamen, and you can climb up to the tower and look out over the river, so the song came from that vision, from that view of the river."

I have heard this song a few times on the radio in the last couple of months and must admit it is a lovely song. After I lost my wife in 2019, I found a "Suzanne" and she took me to places I had never been. Sadly it didnt work out and this song reminds me of her.
