You deserve more comments, Nick. Leonard Cohen has many more superb songs (who doesn't know 'Hallelujah'?), but you might start with Joni Mitchell's 'Court and Spark' album. As for Irish music, start with Dé Danann's 'The Star-Spangled Molly' 1981), an album of Irish-American songs and airs (it's a masterpiece - I knew the female vocalist......).

This was the first Leonard Cohen song I ever heard and now I've been a fan for over forty years. Keep listening, his music has so much to offer.

Omg just come across you on my feed. Listened to the Pogues a staple Christmas song here in the UK love it. Then I found this. One of my top 3 of Leonard Cohens. Love him. So privileged to see him in concert . Suzanne is one of my favourites. So long Marianne is another I love. For me I heard his music as a child in the 70s & so I was hooked. He was an amazing poet . He put his words to beautiful music. For me if I was asked if I’d choose Dylan or Cohen it would be Leonard Cohen every day. Best wishes from Lyn in Liverpool UK 🇬🇧

It's a wonderful, mesmerising track. Shirley Collins did a great cover which offers something different and the pair duetted it on her 1970s TV show which was also great and can be found on here. It's from my favourite album of his which also includes another of his better known tracks "Hey, that's no way to say goodbye" which has a similar musical and vocal feel to this and is also wonderful.

Avalanche and last years man are great songs by Cohen. The whole Songs of love and hate album is great. Definitley a great experience to listen to it in one go

When I first heard this masterpiece, I was with my first love, who was, basically, Suzanne, although with a different name. She has sadly since passed away, and so this is a particularly touching remembrance. Glad you're back and well. Cheers!

Never liked Suzanne; sounded too much like a song written for college bottled blondes in black sweaters. Prefer Famous Blue Raincoat, Joan of Arc, Who By Fire, The Partisan. Hallelujah has been rendered listenable by all the silly covers…only Jeff Buckley did the song any justice.
