The irony is that when I first read this poem (which is its original form) and later heard the song, I thought this is the sort of romance I want. Decades later I saw a documentary about the actual relationship between Leonard and Suzanne and discovered they were just a couple of immature idiots in a dysfuncational, self-destructive relationship that had pretty much nothing to do with romance. Sometimes art surpasses reality.

Probably the best known of the songs apart perhaps from Hallelujah (which I would guess is in this list) yet despite being so often played it never grows old. I say it every time I hear a Cohen song, but it's just another example of his genius. When I found Cohen 50 years ago as a teenager (thank you my sister, Sue), his was referred to as "music to slit your wrists by". I thought then, and I still think now, that completely misses the point of his songwriting. I loved it when I first found it at 15, and I love it now. Thank you Alex and George.

Like many others, I've loved this early Leonard Cohen masterpiece for decades, but it had never occurred to me until now about that gently rippling/ rocking rhythm representing the lapping of the water that figures throughout the song. What a great insight! That will be with me from now on, whenever I hear Suzanne. So, thank you. Incidentally, IIRC, although they hung out together for a while, the pair never actually had a physical affair - it was ALL in the mind!

I am one of those who grew up in the 1960's, and who has followed Leonard Cohen through the years. The mistake that many folks make is to miss some of his less heard work and stick to what are considered his classics. They also over play, and miss the subtlety of work such as "Hallelujah" or "Democracy". My suggestion is to listen to some of the following: "Nevermind", "Slow", "A Thousand Kisses Deep", "In My Secret Life", "Tower of Song", "First We Take Manhattan", "You Want It Darker"...

I have never heard this song before: simply beautiful ... yet it is somehow sinister. I wonder who manipulated who? She was married, he was opportunistic. Who is wrong? Perhaps no one. We are listening to this song in a different time. This was written in a time where monogamy, promiscuity and opportunity bent the rules of moral standards. Quite different to the standards in sway today. Who can judge morality of days past? Not I. I am loving Cohen Week.

I used the “lyrics” of this “song” along with the words from The Stranger Song (you should react to that if you haven’t already done so) as a poetry assignment during one of my English Literature A-Level moments many years ago. It stunned my well read and versed teacher that’s for sure. Wish I kept the bloody paper I wrote! 😂

My class also had to do a project where we each picked a different poet from a list. I wanted to do Cohen, but someone who didn't even know who Cohen was got to pick before me, and randomly chose him. I wound up with Kipling instead. That probably worked to my benefit. Part of the project was to write a poem in the style of your chosen poet. Kipling was very easy. Cohen wouldn't have been.

Leonard Cohen is one of my Favourite poets. who does not want to be touched by someone's mind in that way?! Who does not want to stay charmed in that kind of madness?! It's a song of worship of beauty beyond the superficial. I love listening to it when I'm on a Beach in Greece and allowing myself for a small spell to to respond physically to the sway. It almost makes me feel love for myself and my womanhood.

I was 16 or 17 when I heard this song for the first time and I fell in love with his voice, his lyrics and his guitar instantly. I'm 62 now and for me he is still the GOAT! I saw him 3 times live and it was always amazing! I play the guitar and I sing myself and write songs too. I most have played this song (And many others of him) hundreds of times and still love to do it. Unfortunately there is only one song that I wrote and sing on KZfaq. I recorded it 10 years ago with my cellphone so the sound is terrible. :p If you would like to listen to it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fM9idbun37HdY58.html Clearly infuenced by Leonard Cohen. ;) Btw, I live in Belgium I speak Dutch so my English is not 100% accurate.

I always had the view Cohen was a better writer than a better singer. Yes, the way he sings always leaves room for someone else to make it their own. The emotional content of the lyrics all of a sudden belongs to the singer, not the writer. I don't know how else to explain it, like I said in a previous post, I like Jennifer Warnes's rendition of most his songs, and there are a few singers out there that do an even better job. I don't know what it is but... Long time ago I met a singer, sorry still don't the nationality, Canadian or maybe British, after he had an unexpected hit, in the Netherlands at least. He had that same style of writing, no matter who sang it, it always sounded good. Won't it changed my life but the album Harry's Bar with a song called 'How Wonderful You Are' did wonders for his career and all of a sudden he could make money off his music. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l7SYmceLypvSmp8.html
