Indeed a rare sight these days in modern fountain pens, lever filler system is something that Leonardo Officina Italiana recently introduced into a new model in their line up - Gioiellino, they sent us a prototype to check and reply our feedback together with you all so like this we dictate together their direction on this "blast from the past".

When I was in grade school (in the 1960s!), I found my dad's old fountain pen in a desk drawer. It was a lever fill pen (I don't remember the brand); I was fascinated and (unbeknownst to me at the time) it ignited my interest in fountain pens. This version by Leonardo is stunningly beautiful and I'd love to have one, but I apparently didn't act quickly enough to purchase one when they were first released. I hope that Leonardo plans to continue these lateral fillers in various colors and resins. I would definitely purchase one...or maybe more.

Leonardo has some of them launched from time to time on their website/shop - its more of a novelty offering in their line up but its very cool and very nice :D

Ninety-nine percent of the pens in my collection are lever-fillers. I need this pen!!! Thanks Leonardo for bringing this option back!

Applause to Leonardo for making a modern lever filler fountain pen! It definitely brings out the vintage feeling when fountain pens were still in their glorious days. However, from about 600$ price point, this seems to be priced towards fountain pen collectors rather than to most ordinary fountain pen consumers. I understand that the cost of making a lever filler pen will be much higher compared to a C/C pen. But still, for 600$ price point, I can just get a restored vintage Eversharp skyline, or Waterman for way less than that, if I want to explore the lever filling mechanism. I think this is an interesting idea, but not 600$ interesting for me as an ordinary fountain pen consumer. Maybe they can go around it by making some chased ebonite bodies to enhance the vintage vibe and adding aesthetic value to the pens.

:D it's not your super easy pen to operate ... but I can see myself enjoying this one despite this. The 600 price point is for the celluloid versions where the material commands a higher pricing, such a pen made from black resin like my prototype - it is lower in value.

I am a avid collector of vintage pens, mostly with all being lever fillers. It's refreshing to see a modern 'lateral' filler. Now, if i can get one in the Grande size and in Arco Bronze or Verde & a #8 size nib..my life would be complete! Ha.

Thanks for showing the new Gioiellino from Leonardo! Here are my thoughts and some questions: - The pen looks elegant! I appreciate the fact that it is made out of resin, since this is more durable than celluloid in the long term. - I can imagine that the sac will be hard to clean when changing inks, as you mentioned. - Do you know, if the sac is really glued in? I think Leonardo wanted the Gioiellino to be more repair-friendly. As far as I understand, the grip with the attached sac can be pulled out from the barrel for repairs. If the sac is glued in place, this would make repairs for normal people in the hobby much more complicated. - Will the sac as a replacement part be sold seperately? - Do you know what is the motif on the broad cap band?
@pen.venture
@pen.venture 6 ай бұрын
:D long therm resin is king :D - harder or not ... cleaning is something that is a bit off and must be done in such a way to not care too much ... if you use the same shade of ink I think is better - the sac is glued in, just like any other sac pen ... its something that has to do with how a lever filler pen is constructed, me personally with no experience I was still able to replace a sac to a pen of a customer of mine, after purchasing sacs and some glue, mentioning that I had experience of opening such a pen before - I think the sac replacement will be done by Leonardo or in this case us as a retailer of such items in house - I asked about the motif, I think it comes from delta if im not mistaking because I have a delta pen with the same cap band motif

@@pen.venture Hi Emy, thank you for the answers! I'm a bit curious, how Leonardo will place this new pen model on the market, and when we will see the first regular version, or if it will be limited production runs only.

Nice looking pen and love the re-introduction of the old filling system … and so happy to see the nib performing well with the MB ink which I found to have a medium wetness. I have replace enough sacs to be comfortable with the procedure but I have also experimented with using a smaller diameter sac without a shellac adhesive and after a year of use still not issue. Just something to think about?

I'm not really into the vintage FP world. Mainly because I'm not a tinkerer and the cleaning process of these type of pens is just not my thing. But I'm interrested nonetheless. Simply because of the fact that you mentioned: the materials used are modern and probably less troublesome then the vintage ones. And I don't mind dedicating one ink to a pen as well. İt would be nice to appreciate a 'new vintage' pen every once in a while

This is an attractive pen, and another stylish offering by Leonardo. Personally, however, I would not wish to have a pen in which I cannot see the remaining ink levels. Pens with converters or pens with ink windows are much more practical. So I don't think I would be buying such a model- also the price is rather above my price range... But thank you for showing us this new Leonardo prototype.
@pen.venture

:D couldnt agree more - if seeing the ink is something that is mandatory, this pen is completely the opposite, not only it doesnt show, but it is near impossible to know even how much you inked and this is a major thing.

What a nice looking pen and a great, even-handed review. I like the size and shape of Gioiellino. It's immediately recognizable as a Leonardo, but has its own personality. As a fan of vintage fountain pens, it's cool to see the revival of lever fillers. I expect a modern sac and hardware should last a lifetime. I wish it was in my budget because I'd love to own one of these. It's added to the grail list. One thing I'd be curious about is how it holds up to Japanese inks. Those tend to be more alkaline and have a reputation (deserved or not) for eating up sacs. For vintage pens I stick with old-name European inks like Herbin, Diamine, Mont Blanc, etc. Thanks for the great review.
@pen.venture
@pen.venture 6 ай бұрын
:D thank you for your kind words :D yes its recognisable to the usual Leonardo identity :D I wouldn't bet if you use inks that have all sorts of magic sauces in them ... to hold a lifetime a sac but anyway I think its safe to say it can hold much longer than what usual vintage sacs would. the price point .... of 600 is a lot but for a pen that is made of celluloid, for such a resin piece ... I think it can be a lot lower and maybe we will make some as exclusives to us in black resin with multiple trim colors :D

I really like this idea of combining tradition and technology (says a long-time TT driver). I'm saving my pen funds for Japan right now, but will likely pick up one of these if they continue the line. Thanks for showing us; I've been curious since I saw them appear on Leonardo's site.

A beautiful pen. I applaud the vintage direction and look forward to seeing different finishes, though, like you, I think the black/gold combination is a winner. I recall seeing the company's founder showing off a brown prototype in an Appelboom video; that would also be stunning, especially with a tortoiseshell effect. Are all their nibs made in house now, or are they still using Jowo? Thank you for an excellent, highly informative video.

I love lever fillers, until they don't work: sac blown, lever failure , etc. Having a fountain pen turn into a dip pen is no fun. If they allow user maintenance like their pistol wrench: allow the section to unscrew and sell a sac replacement kit: sac, o-rings for attachment, hemostat, etc then I think that will go a long way toward adoption.
@pen.venture
@pen.venture 6 ай бұрын
hmmm :D I think its complicated to make it easy to open because everyone would open them and its a nightmare to explain how this work to an collector that has no experience with sac pens :D anyway ... im going to put this one through its paces to see if its fails and where and how quick

@@pen.venture Always fun to have something new like this neo vintage pen since the field is getting crowded. Agreed, that getting out the hairdryer and melting away shellac to unseat the barrel would be troublesome and deter most, but access to the sac should be no harder than twisting off the barrel of my Momento Zero 😅, if Gioiellino design v2 comes to fruition! The rub would probably be attaching the sac without shellac to glue in place.🤔 One hopes that o-rings would be sufficient for easy sac replacement but that would be the innovation for Leonardo Officina Italiana Pengineers to figure out. Simple and clear educational videos on sac replacement like they did with the piston wrench would be sufficient. The modern Conklin Crescent Filler is the only other modern take on the sac I know of but I think settling sac failures is handled by the distributor, Yafa. Given that, customers would be wise to purchase from an experienced LOI retailers like Pen Venture 😀to ensure long term support. I found LOI support excellent ❤when I had to ship my Pura back to Italy, so that too is an option. We look forward to your next report!

:D it isn't like all pens of them will be on this filling system, its just a take of them and to be honest, I vintage pen would not draw a collector like me to simply say "yes let me check this lever filler system", on the other hand if Leonardo does a crazy modern take on this vintage system... I'm considering it :D
