A full-out brawl broke loose in the middle of the road when a leopard thought he would make a quick meal of a baboon. The leopard came charging towards the family at full speed, but the male baboons weren't having any of it.

The first video we shared just a few days ago hit over a million views, and that angle shows the leopard's sneaky ways and his speedy retreat, but this angle shows a unique point of view of the baboon's tactics and their quick response!
Watch the original video here: • Leopard Attacked by 50...
38-year-old Merve Mersinligil, a pianist and pedagogue (piano professor), was on her very first Kruger National Park safari with her husband, 44-year-old Lawyer Viktor Szontagh, when she captured this all on camera. She tinged her sighting and shared her story with LatestSightings.com.
Merve and her hubby had just arrived at Kruger a couple of hours prior, excited for their honeymoon stay at Satara Camp. They were driving from Paul Kruger Gate to Tshokwane when BAM! Out of the blue, they spotted a leopard walking right next to the road. He looked very relaxed and not in any particular hurry.
Then suddenly the leopard disappeared into the grass, and the moment was over . Or so they thought. A troop of baboons decided to cross the road, creating a traffic jam of their own. Now, you know baboons are cheeky and full of energy, so you can imagine the chaos and noise they created.
I said to my hubby jokingly "Maybe we should give the baboons a heads-up about the leopard that we just saw". “I had a good laugh, especially since this was my first time in the African wilderness."
"But guess what? That's exactly what happened. The leopard burst onto the scene, probably thinking it was going to get an easy meal. But this leopard was about to learn a lesson in party-crashing. The female baboons, protective, ran back to guard their young while the male baboons went full-on attack mode. The charge was led by what looked like the dominant male. He jumped the leopard almost like a rugby tackle, biting, hitting, and shouting like there was no tomorrow."
The leopard miraculously managed to escape the baboon attack, with some of the big males hot on its tail. These baboons weren't playing games! They even stood guard after the dust settled, making sure Mr. Leopard got the memo: "You ain't welcome here, buddy.

@TragoudistrosMPH I disagree. Often times I see videos where a lion/lions attack and catch one, and the buffalo's just run. Eventually they may return but obviously way too late and the damage has been done. These baboons are way smarter and attack immediately.

@@ChazR25 I'd recommend looking more into it if you're curious (like me). From what I remember, it's situational with cape buffalo. They protect each other under certain circumstances and will just run in others. (I can't remember the research off the top of my head) Baboons often run, too. This discussion now makes me curious as to which species fights or flees more often. I have no clue. (Leopards are solo hunters and lions need a pride to take a buffalo. I'd imagine a group of baboons likely wouldn't fight a group of lions.) You can find footage of buffalo attacking lions (with lions escaping into trees is a famous one.)

The first one engages perfectly too- slows the attack by getting directly in the path and then jumps backwards when the leopard is committed so that he minimizes damage and initiates an immediate surround/swarming. It is the perfect defensive engagement to counter with massive damage. Still very brave to answer the call and desperate from the leopard or maybe young and inexperienced. I think the video was taken in the midst of a drought, and neither the baboons nor the leopard were at full strength, which is probably the reason the leopard was not mauled to death on the spot by the baboons, and which is why also, the baboons did not quite have the energy to pursue the fleeing leopard and maul it to death. If you watch each baboon, they each have their own story in the moment. If you want to know the baboon that did the most significant damage, it's the tallest one middle left on the road, who does a backstep before charging. He hops to the other side from the camera and bites and drags the leopard through the whole fight. 0:37 the bravery of the biggest alpha is most admirable because he did not need any peer pressure to fight and literally hauled himself to stop the leopard. This is the most perfect example of fight or flight in ever. All smaller baboons chose flight while the biggest Alpha males immediately went to fight the threat. Meanwhile the middle sizes ones need a couple of seconds and encouragement by the alphas to then have the confidence to join after jumping and inspecting the situation.

That's one tough leopard, they had him pinned down for a good 10-12 seconds there but he still managed to get up and run away- by the looks of it fairly unharmed although one of the bigger monkeys got a good bite on the leopards thigh. I also noticed that the big alpha monkey that engaged first- although very brave, he would've been toast if he didn't have back up because he was on his back within a second and the leopard was aiming for his throat. Amazing.

There’s a very interesting paper written that identified eight species that exemplify female leadership: hyenas, killer whales, lions, spotted hyenas, bonobos, lemurs, and elephants. Leadership and dominance are different things. There’s muscle and then there’s brains. Us males are just cannon fodder for the smarter females.

WAY better than the other video as this one is landscape and close while the other is vertical and from far away and can't see anything. Notice: -How all the male baboons react attacking the leopard -How the first one put himself between the leopard and the rest of the troop, taking all the danger -How that same first baboon was easily dominated by the leopard -How the other baboons attacked, biting the leopard in a dog like fashion, moving their heads side to side to increase damage, while the first baboon was getting mauled -How the baboons where actually so cautious with the leopard that when the leopard turned to them, to each one I mean, those got away as fast as they could. They know they don't have much against the leopard, except their numbers, and if the attack start dwindling, there's no effect anymore, which happened once the leopard started turning, stopping the attack, allowing the leopard to easily escape. Al the male baboons have for defense is their big canine teeth, of course their great agility, threat displays and their numbers, but beyond that, individually, they aren't really a match for the leopard. There was one baboon that really spent all the time biting the leopard in one spot. Wonder how much damage it did given that pantherinae skin tend to be quite tough, but baboons have really big canines, not sure about their bite strenght given all numbers on the internet seem to be made up, of all animals, not only baboons.
