I hate seeing reptiles in those little plastic tubs with no enrichment. It’s not optional. The studies done on reptile intelligence show they’re much smarter than most people think, so I don’t think enrichment is optional, it’s a necessity. Great video.

I second that. It really makes me furious that some of the major companies market really unsuitable items just for profit such as sand etc. It sends out the wrong message as well: "look, for a 50 dollar investment you can get a gecko". NO no no no I spent over 300 dollars to set up my tank. I even might switch things around every once in a while because I got different items that don't all fit (20 gallon long tank that I'll eventually upgrade to a 40 but seeing as I spent over 300 before even getting the gecko, safe to say I'm a bit maxed out now) but yeah my thought is to move ledges and climbing items around every once in a while, not the hides because I don't want to stress the gecko by moving his home, but the other items like the ledge, the water dish, the branches. My thought was to move it maybe every few months just to give a bit of a change of scenery for him/her to explore or I may set up a 10 gallon exploratory tank that I can put the gecko in every once in a while. I've seen people do that for hamsters and I would put 1 hide in there and some crawly spots but not the full 3 hides minimum since it's only a play tank for like an hour or so and then I'd put him back in his main tank. Another thought I had is I'd love to maybe one day get 2 pvc enclosures and join them by a pipe or something. Dunno. Just throwing thoughts out. But I love creating habitats and providing the best possible, it's just fun to do

I just got an originally rescued and now re-homed leo and I want to change his tank (he is just on paper towel) but I was a little worried since he is 7ish years old(and currently shedding) that I might stress him out too much by making changes.

my gecko loves to climb through toilet paper tubes. she'll ignore them if I just hold them, but once I slide the toilet paper tube over her head, she scampers through them and she doesn't get bored with them as quickly as she does with my hands (she'll walk over my hands maybe twice and then she goes off to explore my arm or shirt). (I introduced her to them because I am planning to make her a sort of jungle gym thing in a large bin because she loves to climb up high, but she doesn't have many opportunities to do that in her cage because I don't want her falling and getting hurt, so I thought she would appreciate having a place to climb in where I can monitor her.)

Heat mats aren't an optimal heat source for these animals. Coming from a hot and arid climate they escape the heat during the day by hiding and then come out after or during sunrise to heat up and start hunting. They're also occaisonal baskers and especially when you provide UV light it should be combined with getting heat. It just mimics their natural habitat best. Heat mats have their place in some set ups but when you can achieve the right temps with just a che there's not really a point in using one. Heat mats are easier to controle so maybe the better option for beginners but for experienced keepers an overhead heating source should be provided.

I have recently started bringing our leo in the bathroom with me in the evening while I brush my teeth, shower sometimes, or just hang out for a bit to give her a chance to move around. I put a large towel along the bottom of the door to prevent escape. I also keep the light low (since leos are more active at night). Usually I drape a large towel over the edge of the tub, which enables her to climb in and out of the tub. (If I need to leave for a minute, I put her in the tub without the climbing towel, and close the door behind me so I can be sure she'll be safe.) When I'm in there, I try to move a little slower than usual because, as you mentioned, big creatures moving can be scary. (I also make sure I know where she is before I move my feet at all.) When I sit on the floor and read for a bit, she almost always comes over to climb on me. A bare arm or shoulder top seems to be a good place to warm up. She also likes to warm up next to the hot-water baseboard heater. (Yes, I always check to make sure it's not too hot for her.) By the way, I chose the bathroom because it is the simplest room, a place where I can always find her. I keep a few large towels stashed away just for this so that I don't have to wash new towels every time she's been in there. Anyway, just another idea for enrichment...

Custom👏 backgrounds 👏 If you wanna improve your geckos life over 200% provide them with different climbing opportunities. Make large areas for basking and chilling, make small and difficult areas for them to really train their climbing skills, make different hides and reticulated areas for them to explore. These animals come from rocky grasslands and semi-deserts, their entire body is optimized for climbing on rocks. I have a Leo with Enigma Syndrom and her issues improved immediately after I gave her a selfmade background to climb on. She got better at hunting, handling, estimate distances and started eating more. It's incredibly easy and cheap to do by yourself. Btw: yes overhead heating is the best heat source for arid and crepescular/nocturnal animals. In their natural habitat they escape heat during the day by hiding and then come out at night to warm up and go hunting. During the day they will spend a couple of minitues basking outside or at the entrance of their hide to get heat and UV light if they need to but the rest will be spent in cooler areas. Heat mats are great for beginners because they're easier to controle but if you are more experienced and don't want to keep your gecko minimalistic overhead heating is the way to go. It will unlock a whole new range of behavior in your gecko.
@infinitymid4297
@infinitymid4297 5 жыл бұрын
C Fol to be honest, a heat lamp on a thermostat is much easier to control than a heat mat on a thermostat. It’s much safer since heat mats is conduction, the probe will not register the temp and shut off properly before the gecko gets burnt especially since they have to get on top of it to feel the heat. However with the lamp since it’s heating up the air first, the gecko has plenty of time to feel the temps and realize if it’s too hot before it gets too hot
@cfol4437
@cfol4437 5 жыл бұрын
@@infinitymid4297 very good point. I just know from some people on amino who have humidity and temperature issues with lamps but these people also have fairly small enclosures so that may be the problem. But yeah personally I can work a lot better with bulbs than heat mats.

In the wild Leopard geckos hide in the day as their skin is extremely thin and basking mid day could potentially hurt their eyes and their skin, so to get heat they come out and lay on the rocks that are heated by the sun. So technically they are not really "basking" animals. Edit: I'd like to make it clear that while leopard geckos may bask to get UV, overhead heaters should not be the geckos only heat source.

If my husband didn't but a pet limit on me he said I would have my own little zoo ( I also have a dog and cat). :D I got my first two at a reptile show from a breeder in December, both female, 1 and 2 years old and used to be used for breeding but are now just spoiled happy pets, I named them Jania and Yrel. :) I do have them housed together only cause at the time I had one tank (wasn't planning on buying 2) and they came from the same breeder, who said they could be together. They get along really well which I am happy about. The other 2 I got came from an ad on Craigslist, they had had a rough life previously, I have no idea how old they are, and was told they were both female, decided to call them Azula and Mia. Turns out one is actually a male, who I now call Zuko. I separated them as soon as my husband caught them in the act... That's how I knew I had a male and female. >.< Unfortunately, Azula might be getting ready to lay eggs, so I feel bad for not knowing one was a male but it won't happen again. But they are all happy, healthy, and spoiled rotten. :) Thanks for your very informational videos, definitely will be subscribing!

ladyvatallnee please separate the females! They’re solitary animals and don’t benefit at all. It causes lots of stress and gender doesn’t matter. I have seen countless cases of geckos (females too) seeming fine for years, then snapping and seriously injuring or killing each other. If they share hides or sleep together that’s a major sign of dominance. It’s only a matter of time and not worth the risks at all.

@@fionashepley478 I never planned on keeping them together permanently. I had to convince my husband that I needed more tanks, he didn't see the need as the breeder told us they were find together and he is also pretty strict with the finances, especially when it comes to me wanting to buy more things.. I showed him a bunch of videos and things I read and was finally able to convince him to go this weekend to get more tanks for them so they can be happy, healthy and just as spoiled oh and also that this was not just me trying to get more animals. So by Saturday everyone will have their own enclosures with all the hides and stuff they need.

my baby boy sucks at hunting (I can watch him miss 7 times in a row before making contact with a cricket or even mealworm sometimes) One thing I;m really happy i got was a hamster dish/wheel thing. Its a saucer with an angled axis, so when you climb on it it rotates down again. He climbs and runs around that thing every single day multiple times a day . Petting them is a sign of affection and when two females that get along well, both of mine, are housed together, they end up cuddling a lot. Petting and holding will form a strong bond and let your gecko know they are safe. Some geckos do not like certain places touched, one of mine hates having the top of her butt touched, and you should avoid these areas as it will freak them out. My other gecko likes to have full body "massages" where she dictates where my fingers scratch her. Your gecko should sort of show you what they want so just pay attention.

Housing two female leopard geckos together in a big enough tank, I have 50 gallons, will not lead to fighting as long as they like each other. When we first got them, we let them see each other and smell each other. Then we introduced them to their home. At first, there was a possible sign of dominance in one but they both quickly calmed down. They do not always lay together but they do sometimes. They also search for each other if one is gone for too long as our het albino gecko had eye troubles when she was younger. I pay very close attention to their behavior both separately and together. I am very passionate when it comes to the safety and care of animals, therefore, if there was a sign of trouble, I would intervene immediately.

Something I do to give some added stimulation that is incredibly easy to do is rearrange the cage every so often. I have a bunch of decor I cycle through cages and they tend to enjoy exploring their “new” home. I also build “obstacle courses” on my bed. I put some boxes and pillows around and show them a waxworm on the other side of the obstacle course. They never really follow it but once they get their waxworms they wander around and explore. I’ve also found that they do seem to find interest in interacting with each other. My little one is too small to mingle with the adults but every once and a while I’ll put my adult female and adult male on my bed and allow them to sniff each other and lick each other and say hi and do whatever leopard geckos do. Of course I keep an incredibly close eye on them to make sure they don’t hurt each other and I never put them in the same cage (did that once for less than five minutes to change the carpet of one. My female did not enjoy that.)
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 4 жыл бұрын
I strongly recommend never letting them interact. They’re solitary animals and don’t benefit. It’s stressful for them, whether it’s noticeable or not. They merely tolerate each other, and if they fight there won’t be time to split them up. The male may also start trying to breed with the female (and when breeding they can bite very hard). It’s just an unnecessary risk. I have a suggestion regarding substrate: reptile carpet catches their teeth and claws and harbours bacteria no matter how much you clean it. Paper towel, non-adhesive shelf liner, or textured tile are all good solids. It’s best to offer digging enrichment with reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate. You could do full loose, half and half, or full solid with a dig box
@silverfire1248
@silverfire1248 4 жыл бұрын
Fiona Shepley the male isn’t allowed near anyone during breeding season. He’s very insistent on tail rattling at anything that looks like a leopard gecko and the one time I had him and the female out on my bed together, he chased her around so he spends time alone. I guess I should make it more clear for interacting. My bed is large (a queen) and I put multiple boxes around and put the geckos on separate sides of the bed I let them choose whether or not to investigate each other. Sometimes they purposefully walk over to each other and then wander away after sniffing the other, sometimes they just ignore the other. They each have boxes to retreat to as well. I actually have a sort of dig box for the male. His humid hide has a lot of eco earth and he likes to move it around and fling it out and stuff. My baby has a habit of licking everything so I’m holding off on her for a little bit, to prevent impaction. My female on the other hand... I got her one but she refused to go anywhere near the dig box to the point where she wouldn’t even go to her water bowl. Idk why she hated it but she did so I ended up just getting rid of it. She’s an... interesting gecko. She has both a basking light over a rock hide and a hide over a heat mat (I like to let them soak up the heat on the warm rocks like they would in the wild) but she chooses to pick a spot under a decorative tree where both the overhead light and the heatmat are present. It’s completely open but she loves that spot.
@fionashepley478
@fionashepley478 4 жыл бұрын
Silverfire 12 ah, ok. I still don’t recommend having two out at the same time or letting them interact. They can still hurt each other and don’t benefit. Reptile carpet still isn’t a great substrate so it’d be a good idea to switch it to tile or non-adhesive shelf liner at least. I’m sure the male would appreciate half or full loose substrate to dig in.

Dirt is actually more clean and easier to tidy up than carpet. Reptile carpet is a dream for bacteria. Urine and feces get caught inside the fibres, it's hard to clean and there's not much volume for bacteria to spread out so they create hot spots. With dirt you don't even have to go full bioactive. Spot cleaning is mostly enough and if you feed mealworms you can throw in some of the beetles and they get rid of the feces.

This whole belly heat thing is pretty much a myth. Their bellies have the most surface to absorb heat and in their natural habitat ambient temps can get very high while rock contains the heat. So the most efficient way to get heat is through the belly after sunset. For arid and crepescular/nocturnal species overhead heating mimics their natural habitat the best and should be used. A heat mat can be used as an additional heat source if your overhead heat source can't reach high enough temps inside the warm hide.

Their home essentials are stored there and one of my geckos loves to explore the things. I obviously supervise them and make sure wires or other dangerous items are removed or covered. I also put them on the floor between my legs and allow them to wander just past my toes. If they get too far, I bring them back. Both of my geckos also love to climb up my arms to the top of my head. Mostly, I just allow them to wander within reach and out of the way of dangerous things. Exercise should depend on your gecko and their personal preference but please supervise as they are fast creatures. Music can also stimulate the mind and sometimes they will show preference to a certain type or sound of music.

I feel you are dead on with your suggestions and i feel it is a key to their happiness and overall well being. They love to dig and climb (yes climb, you heard that right) and explore. Love your videos and all your great insight.

If you don’t mind me asking, are they housed together?

@@fionashepley478 I have an older (8yo) female who is in a 38 gal by herself, a 1yo rescue in a tank by herself and 2 females who cohabitate. One is 2 and the other is a rescue ( she is aprox same size so I'm guessing they are close in age ). That being said I do currently have a metal shelving unit I bought and is still unassembled in the box waiting for a remodel I should have ready before Fall . When renovations are complete and shelves are up all 4 will be housed separately. I have been very lucky that my 2 roommates have done as well as they have. I do not suggest cohabbing because it is risky and there are too many variables but sometimes there are circumstances you may have to for a period and sometimes we get lucky . I've been vigilant and experimented with ways to feed them but still have broken up a few scuffles with my handy dandy water bottle. LOL Cohabbing Leo's makes me nervous but some situations can have success. Keys I feel aid the process are space, ample hides and individual or closely monitored feedings.

I dont use an under tank heat mat for my leopard gecko. Hes definitely does come out more and uses all of his tank. With the right gradient I actually notice him use the cool side during the day and the hot side at night.

I change my geckos surroundings every few months. Change up the atmosphere. He gets more active and explores all the changes.
