There are lots of options for mechanical keyboards these days -- so how does this 80% board from Leopold stack up?

The 'no LED backlight' is why I like this keyboard. Most current mechanical keyboards are aimed at gamers, who apparently want a psychedelic lighting effect to their keyboard. They also seem to want different coloured WSAD keys, in case they forget which keys are used for controlling the game. It's so refreshing to see a mechanical keyboard that doesn't look like a flat christmas tree.

I think this is a common misconception. People want rgb to get the exact color they want, to fit in with the rest of their "setup". Not to have all the colors at once. That's just how they are demonstrated. That's the only thing I miss from my keyboard, the ability to have purple light instead of white so it matches the light from my screen and desk.

I find key backlighting useful for just one occasion - when it's dark or semi-dark in my room and my hands are off the keyboard, it's slightly faster to put my hands on the home keys (f and j) if I can see the letters. Also in some cases I do look at the keyboard, like when I use the Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys. It also just looks cool in my opinion, unless it's in a well-lit room, the it's completely useless. Just my opinion, of course.

Leopold is one of the better mass produced boards out there.. i have bin using them ages.. i have several of them. but now i moved on to customs and self build boards.. still i have my first Leopold FC660M with mx-clears and the more expensive FC660C topre board.. There is one reason why i like Leopold so much and that has to do with their stabelizers they use the best stock stabs in the market.. if you like to improve your feel add a bit of SuperLube crease to them.. the reason i recomend superlube is that it does not react with the plastics .. welcome to the keyboard hobby haha.. it's a fun community ..

@@JustSujC totally understandable it's massive black hole for your wallet. however there are more affordable boards these days that won't kill your wallet like the ikkie68 be on the lookout when they come with R3 and keychron has a couple of nice boards. i bought the Q1 that needed sum cheap modding and i love it.. typing on it now fun thing is that it's QMK and VIA compatible. ikkie68 is also an affordable fun fully programmable board. still Leopold is so well priced nothing can touch it ;-)

Do you think I can spring swap these without desoldering? I wanted to get my girlfriend a 980M with MX clears (which I want to spring swap to something lighter). I heard as long as there's enough space around the switches in the PCB, you can just do it with tweezers. What do you think?

Came here for the sound test, but you can't really compare the blues on the keyboard you tested with against the Leopold with the browns. Obviously very different build quality and completely different keyboards, so the sound test is basically moot. It would be a much better comparison using the same exact keyboard with different switches. I'd love to hear a sound test of the blues on the Leopold but they are hard to find.

I don't know exactly what "mechanical keyboard" means. Aw, I miss clickety keyboards! Also, where can you find that little tool that you used to remove the keys? I wouldn't mind trying that, just to clean my keyboard. I can't stand how nasty keyboards can get. I don't eat over it, I clean/brush it out almost daily, and even cover it with a scarf when I'm not using it. It somehow still gets crap in there!

A mechanical keyboard is a keyboard whose keys are activated by mechanical switches rather than by capacitance.

The easiest thing to do is Google it. Wikipedia will give you a good heads up. Mechanical keyboard. Com is good place to start for ones for sale, or WASD.com also. The key is, mk use switches, others use contacts to make the connections. A mk you don't have to press the key cap all the way down, making the press more comfortable in your fingers. You get a full thud on other keyboards. Finding the right mk is like hitting the lotto. Plus, a good quality one will last you through several computers. Good luck.

If people who think they want choose between Filco and Leopold please for god say choose Leopold. Because I am that one guy who choose Filco and let me tell you how bad is it Filco use cheap as fuck abs keycaps and if you want to replace for other keycaps you better research the one type of keycaps that can fit Filco keyboard (if you replace your Filco keycaps you will feel like your space key is not right and that what I call bad design for Filco.) Filco come with bad keycaps that you can not switch and none remove able cable than how it feel, it feel just little better than the duckys. And that me say it again Leopold is the best 150 to 200 keyboard you can get for cherry switch they use the most well done keycaps (double shots pbt) and the big key like shift or enter feel better than the any pre build keyboard. The down side is like if you love blue switch like me you will found out the blue on Leopold sound quieter because they put some on top the pcb so it sound quieter.

I do get the appeal of mechanical keyboards, especially if you’re doing a lot of typing, for example if you’re writing scripts for your KZfaq channel on top of everything else you have to do in a day but personally I just can’t justify the cost over a cheap keyboard that will do the job for 1/5 the price.

from what im seeing its $170 USD per amazon. waaaaaaay to expensive. a tesoro excalibur spectrum with brown switches is going ~$60 right now. with RGB backlighting. i mean $100 USD is par for the course in mechanical keyboards, but unless this thing is military grade indestructible, the price is too much.
@TheRikardo91
@TheRikardo91 6 жыл бұрын
I'll agree that $170 is a little too much, the price should be a bit lower. I also have a Leopold FC750R, not the new PD model with stock PBT doubleshot keycaps, it's one of their "older" models with normal side printed PBT keycaps. Mine is white. However I'll tell you this... you can't really compare a Leopold to a Tesoro. Leopold is one of the best mechanical keyboard brands on the market and not many other manufacturers are as good as Leopold in terms of build quality and overall durability. Leopold, Filco, Vortex, Varmilo etc... (heck... even Ducky and Cooler Master), all of these are a few notches above the Razers, the Corsair, the Tesoros, the Steelseries, the Logitechs etc., I'm talking about these "gaming" brands in general. Topre keyboards are also fantastic and are even a bit more expensive than Leopolds actually, but that's a debate for another day. What I'm trying to say is this, Leopold is a fantastic mechanical keyboard manufacturer and easily one of the better commercial brands you can find right now. Yes, they might be a little expensive for what they offer but they're great keyboards that will last you a long time (unlike Tesoro). ;)

Shicky256 not really. I’ll spend a fair bit of time playing a video game with a controller but since I’m retired I don’t spend much time entering text, in fact I do most of my typing on a glass screen these days. Perhaps more to the point I have dirt cheap unbranded keyboards from the 90’s that still work just fine and who can say that about a MadKatz controller? :D
