So I think he answered why the china is behind him on instagram. Basically he's only supposed to use it for that one section of that song, but if it's in his line of sight he WILL hit it, so he put it behind him so he could only hit it when he absolutely had to. Hence why it looks so ridiculously uncomfortable when he is playing it xD

@@AndrewRooneyDrums the best way to describe his style I think is "controlled chaos" 😂 he definitely has some kind of ADD or something, I think he's even made jokes about it on Instagram too. I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not but as far as I understand it, the second part of the song....Baard was sent that guitar loop which was recorded in free-time with no particular beat used or even thought of...He then wrote a complete drum part to match around that. How he found a steady pulse in there is beyond me!

Baard is truly a genius and what amazes me is how is able to keep a technical groove while having this insane display of energy (I mean this playthrough is the best example), you really have the impression he gives it all for each song. Then he is an incredibly creative drummer. He has several playthroughs on KZfaq and, while we can recognize his styles, they are all different and showcase a different aspect of his technique/playing. I am not writing that because I am fan of him but they are all worth checking: - Illuminate - Rewind - The Price -Moon - Bonneville - COMA - Mirage - The Sky Is Red

It's also pronounced more like "bort" than "baahrd" Leprous is not metal - they will not categorize themselves, but most of it seems to be progressive rock and even then they won't call it that really. Ihsahn from Emperor is Einar's brother in law, which should give an indication of his roots and TL;DR much like Michel from Volbeat, Einar wanted to branch out from your standard nordic death metal genres and work free form, much like the direction Opeth ended up going, in hindsight (and to the dismay of many fans, most of whom were already arguing about "what period is best" when keyboards and acoustic albums showed up in the plan). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZ5dqa2oqLyupp8.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irOPa7N029zeZGQ.html

Great reaction man! Leprous is an amazing band. They call themselves avant-garde rock, but they have a lot of progressive elements. After I discovered them, and saw these vids, Baard took the top spot as my favorite drummer. Beat out Danny Carey for the #1. That's saying a lot! lol He's got quite a few drum vids out there. I'd suggest 'Illuminate' for the studio setting, also it's just a really good song.

As per technique and which are best - you're absolutely right. There is no "best" because each individual's mind works differently, as are each individual's anatomical structure fashioned differently, which then brings the ergonomic factor into play. Keep a space between the thumb and index, don't keep a space between the thumb and index. Bah! Weckl says yes, ten thousand other drummers say no. And so goes the fundamental fact that there are no fundamental certainties in drumming.

another thing of note, Leprous had two drummers for most of their first few tours / first album. pretty sweet. also, make sure you peep the new king crimson live incarnation. THREE DRUMMERS. front and center. one of those being gavin harrison. whom baard does remind me of, in regards to his dynamics and clarity in his performances.
