Enjolras is also underrated in the original novel. He was a real person and the Friends of the ABC was a real revolutionary group that began the June Rebellion in 1832. He is underrated because he is one of the people who dies in the rebellion. Every member of the Friends of the ABC die in both the Musical and the Novel, with only Marius surviving. Victor Hugo created this character as a parallel to himself, because he also fought in the June Rebellion and survived to write Les Miserables thirty years later. Also, in 1832, Hugo published his other great work: The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

@@laurenstone6001 You’re actually wrong. Phantom DOES mention that opera but Don Juan is an actual opera. Les Mia (the novel written by Victor Hugo) came out 1862 and Phantom came out 1910.

They were fighting for a good cause. How is sacrificing yourself for what you believe in "a game"? They were martyrs for the movement.
@jambob3486

They say several times to each other throughout the rebellion that the reason that the common people haven't taken up arms and joined them was that they were scared. However when the moment of truth arrived and the Army began attacking the barricade, nobody came to support them. Considering the primary conflict was between the poor and the nobility, the commoners simply didn't trust the leaders of this movement since most of them were all from noble families. Many of those boys word convinced to join the movement simply to spite their parents and family, which sounds like something an angsty teenager would do. In the end, the people were not willing to give up their lives for a struggling revolution they didn't even start.

jambob3486 Regardless of their economic standing, they still fought for the good of the poor. They still fought for a good cause regardless of who came to support them. As I said, sacrificing yourself for a cause that you believe in, is not a game.

The poor tactial decisions made during the rebellion would actually help in the success of the French Revolution of 1848. So not everything was so fruitless.
