One of the most challenging books of this year and also, one of the best book I read this year as well, so it deserved the effort! I have the edition Penguin Classics, an imprint of Penguin Book, 2012, Cover by CB Smith.

I'm 400 page's in and loving it. I really enioyed the Waterloo chapters and audibly gasped at the end with the reveal of how the battle meets the story. I have been warned of the sewer section but so fsr its just beautiful. Huga writes in such a way that sometimes you're forced to put the book down and reflect. Great review.

Been meaning to read this one for a while, but doorstop size books always intimidate me. Huge commitment, you know.

What a great review, great overview with not many spoilers. You have sparked my interest in the book. I will have to dust my copy off and see what I can do with it.

I'm really happy! Even there are some parts that you can pass, the rest of the book is worth reading and meditate on it :)

I have seen the stage play but never read the book. I have a copy that belonged to my mother that I have been meaning to read for years. You have encouraged me to give it a try and I like the idea that I don't have to read it all at once but can take it in smaller pieces.

Kathleen Ann Yes, definitely give it a try! You can skip the descriptive chapters with no harm and still enjoy the story! When you read the love letter of Marius to Cosette, make a pause and let me know how do you like it :) :) :)

Can you let us know the exact name of the version you have? I read what I thought was a full version, but later on I was reading reviews and I think it was still some sort of abridgment. (Even though it was huge! I read it on my ereader, which is now sadly dead.) I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I'm a huge fan of the musical, but the first time I tried reading it, I wanted to pull my hair out with the way he'd get off track with descriptions of this or that street, for pages and pages at a time. Oh, yes, Waterloo! It went on and on and on! On my second try, I pushed through, and I was very glad I did.

ha ha, I had the same reaction as you, I dropped it many times because of the random long descriptions but powered until the end! The edition that I have is Penguin Classics an imprint of Penguin Book, 2012, Cover by CB Smith (I'm copying from the cover, I hope it helps) :) Happy reading!
