At the 2016 Gala Night of Storytelling, Australian studies researcher Susan Carland shares the story of the book that changed her life: Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables.
‘I don’t remember the first time I read [Victor Hugo’s] Les Miserables, but what I do remember is how deeply a particular scene in the book affected me. It’s an exchange between two characters that was so unexpected and such an example of how someone can exemplify audacious grace, that I couldn’t stop turning it over in my head for days afterwards. Even now, I often reflect on that moment and what I can learn from it.’ In the scene, Jean Valjean steals silverware from a kindly bishop. When Valjean is apprehended and brought back to the bishop, the bishop lies, telling the men that that the silverware was a gift he gave to Valjean, and that the thief should be freed. ‘So much of the way that we deal with each other is about revenge … it’s about knee-jerk responses and reminding people who’s the boss … We live in a time when very few of our heroes are remarkable for their audacious grace. Rarely do they exemplify a better way of living - a better way of being - for us to look up to.’

I love Les Miserables. It's my new favourite book and it learned me to show kindness to everyone, even the bad people. Which I rarely do, because I'm very proud. Les Mis is a 2000 page brick of inspiration.

"Comme s’il pressentait que son heure était proche, Grave, il ne faisait plus à personne un reproche ; Il marchait en rendant aux passants leur salut ; On le voyait vieillir chaque jour, quoiqu’il eût À peine vingt poils blancs à sa barbe encor noire ; Il s’arrêtait parfois pour voir les chameaux boire, Se souvenant du temps qu’il était chamelier." Victor Hugo on the prophet Mohammed Peace be upon him.

This is why classic novels should still be taught in school. We learn via stories, parables, songs, etc. Instead of making more arbitrary and “broad stroke” laws, allow lessons in morality to be extracted from stories. This scene and lesson from Les Miserables could be applied in several aspects of our current society that would thing so much better for so many. *Sigh* In the meantime, I’ll start with myself. Be the change, right?

Many people dont know that Victor Hugo became a Muslim. He died as A Muslim and he wrote a poem describing prophet Muhammad. The French government covered up that they feared many French will follow his thoughts about islam His beautiful poem is called L’AN NEUF DE L’HÉGIRE

I read through the comments to see if anyone else was discussing what this bishop was exemplifying. The love and forgiveness of Christ, the God he serves. The God who taught that if we forgive others their transgressions, Our Father in Heaven will also forgive ours. And who also taught that it is not enough to forgive seven times, but seventy times 7. Because He is a loving and forgiving God who will do the same for us. Try it. Repent and ask for forgiveness. For the very worst thing you have ever done, even for that which you have not forgiven yourself. And even for the smallest things. Bear your mistakes and ask forgiveness from the Loving Lord Jesus Christ. Just, ask right now for forgiveness, with a repentant heart, and see just what happens. Nobody has to know. Just do it and see. Glory to God for the healing that comes with forgiveness 🙏 May you receive His mercy, His love and His salvation. May His Holy Spirit come and dwell in you so that you may bear His fruits of LOVE, JOY, PEACE, FORGIVENESS, HOPE, THANKFULLNESS, GOODNESS, GLADNESS, GENTLENESS AND SELF-CONTROL ❤

Why is everyone so much inbreed about the fact Victor Hugo was supposedly converted to Islam ? He was born and raised in Catholic church as a child and became a hardcore defender of the French Republic, anticlerical and opposed to any religious beliefs as an old man. Just because you wrote 2 texts among thousands of others didn’t means anything. A lot of people have wrote about important religious figures and their amazing path of life without sharing any of their beliefs…

Observant Christians, Jews and Muslims have very much in common, in that they share very many values and beliefs. The people of modern day 'Western' secular democratic Nations have broken away from their religious foundational values, beliefs and traditions, and are therefore much further removed from Christianity than Christianity is to Judaism and Islam.

A good speech but I think she missed one essential thing about the story. This audacious grace is shown by the BISHOP precisely because of his faith, which shows the audacious grace of God in Jesus. The motivation to act the way he did is because the Bishop himself has been shown grace by God. And it wasn't because Valjean earned any favour. Similarly it's not about us changing the world through trying harder to be gracious, acting like the bishop, but it's about us needing to be shown grace by God, just as Valjean was.

Yes! I was thinking the same thing… she stopped short of the picture of Christ’s redemption… that he was redeemed and forgiven and those candlesticks were to serve as a reminder he was redeemed. Thank you for the comment.
