Les Paul was friends with all the big names in guitar when he made his solid body guitar, in fact he showed it to Gibson they denied him, he showed it to fender and he made the first solid body lap string guitar befor les had his solid body guitar out on the market.

I've been watching a bunch of these. Brings me more pleasure seeing Les interacting with his guests and joking around than I can say. Joe was one of the very few I've seen so far that was able to do his thing and meld it with something that includes Les's playing. I don't understand the negative comments? Maybe they don't know who Les is? Seeing him having a great life into his golden years brings tears to my eyes. What a treasure and gift to the world he was.

The clarity and feeling of Les' single note lines are so sweet. Joe's sustain made Summertime shimmer. Yet another special version of it. Amazing how Summertime is amenable to so many different renditions.
@Jedizen074 жыл бұрын
Most folks don't know this: Joe is playing several Eddie Harris lines here, especially in the beginning from, 1:49 to 2:11 ( Joe grew up listening to him through his mother who was an avid jazz and soul music fan ). Satch may not be a Jazz player but he's can swing when he wants to.

That lead me to check out Eddie Harris. Thanks!

You ever hear him do Cool #9? His transitioning from Wes Montgomery/ George Benson feeling lines to his signature sound and feel is flawless. Shows that the jazz portion of a "fusion" equation doesn't NEED to be progressive.

As I watched this I just had to imagine that all of Joe's effects and various stomp boxes were invented back in the 40's and 50's. It was fun watching these two guys make a great musical connection. It certainly looked like Les was enjoying watching his legacy of musical instrumental creativity come out of Satch's fingers. Great video, really enjoyed it!
@willrichtor Жыл бұрын
I don't know how he sets up now but Joe used to run with minimal pedals, letting an eventide harmonizer do the bulk of the processing of his tone since it could emulate pretty much any pedal or effect created up to the point of its introduction without having to worry about level/gain stacking like when you run multiple pedals. I read him say one time that there was even a setting to emulate a dying battery in a pedal. Pretty sure his old floor setup used to be the controller/ trigger for the eventide, a vox wah, a DS1 and not much else. Of course he's a pedal addict so no telling how long he rolled that way but I'm sure it helped out in live situations, considering the amount of processing needed for that tone.
@toogie5554 жыл бұрын
Joe: "but you guys have rehearsed, I think" Les: "but it took me 93 years to get it! 6:32 I only hope I could be as sharp as Le Paul at age 93!

Joe Satriani is to electric guitar what Segovia was to classical, so to see him not only starstruck but nervous, shy and intimidated by THE PROGENITOR of the instrument is priceless. You can tell he just wanted to roll his tone knob all the way off and just play some tasteful rhythm and watch Les do his thing but Les wanted to see a show. Amazing what Les could do with just a few notes, considering he was NEVER a minimalist player, except maybe when compared to Chet.
