I also heard somewhere that the hidden mind-controlling message is also, well, not really a thing. Like it doesn't actually work, even in the context of the show! Which kinda make senses since this is the first and only time this season that Stan believes Dipper! :p

Makes sense. He was more freaked out than angry when he found out. Probably was told like. "Hey this song will help you keep your girlfriend" and bought into it without further question. Robbie is an ass 90% of the time but he ain't no mastermind of evil.

a few spoiler-free things, Alex Hirsch's twin sister Ariel begged him to make an episode about a supernatural boy band, so he made this episode for her. The cipher at the end says, "happy now, Ariel?" This whole episode was a gift to his sister. I read, that, when he intended to do such an episode (with a supernatural boy band), Ariel suggested that Lance Bass should be one of the voices, since she was obsessed with him at Mabel's age. It was also a surprise for her from her brother, to voice this scene together with Lance Bass.

Alex compounded the joke by having Sev'Ral Times being voiced by Lance Bass of N-SYNC, who was one of Ariel's favourite boy bands growing up. [SPOILERS -- LOOK AWAY!!] We defend Stan with the benefit of knowing what happens in future episodes. But just because we longtime fans of Gravity Falls love Stan doesn't mean we should push that opinion on Elijah. Distrusting Stan is COMPLETELY valid. He's a great character, but he's also a creepy, sketchy, dishonest, violent old man with a mile-long rap sheet. None of what we learn about him later on changes that. And I think it would be nice, JUST ONCE, to watch someone react to this show who's still appropriately suspicious of him by "Not What He Seems."

i think alex hirsch said at one point that he wanted to communicate that robbie actually had no intention of hypnotizing wendy and that the “hidden message” actually didn’t work, but it didn’t come across too well in the actual episode. he did lie to her and claim that he wrote it himself when he actually stole it from another band, so i’d say that’s reason enough

5:06 I loved how canned brown meat was referenced in the Amphibia episode “Wax Museum”! And Elijah, fun fact, I don’t know if you remember but in that episode it was basically like a gravity falls crossover, which is ironic since I think Matt Braly was one of the writers or animators of the show I don’t remember.

"switch to girls" I don't know if anyone's told you, but the show's creator Alex Hirsch pretty much confirmed Wendy is bisexual on social media a while back (unfortunately not something Disney would have let him say in the show- he's also been quite vocal in his complaints about Disney censorship).

Fun fact to explain the weird bits in this show that Disney allows, in an interview, the creator said they would specifically right jokes and bits they knew wouldnt be allowed, so that they wouldnt cut the ones they wanted, either way tho, I'll never understand Disney's choices

Alex Hirsch goes into how hard it was to even make Gravity Falls because of all the random and weird stuff Disney wanted to cut and remove and censor. Gravity Falls had lots of issues like that because it was primarily adult-themed with the episodes, plots, and characters.

I'm glad I didn't go through much of a boyband phase. I did kind of like Howie D. from Backstreet Boys, but I think it's just cuz he looked the most feminine of the group. Looking back, the lesbian signs were there, I was just surrounded by too much heteronormativity to figure it out.

Alex Hirsch had trouble with Disney and some of the jokes in the scenes he created, and Disney would ask him to remove those jokes. But he insisted on most of them to keep them in, arguing with Disney about it until he got what he wanted. This should explain some of the things that were in this show that Disney let him keep in

Okay, but here's the real question posed by this episode: did Stan teach Mabel how to pick locks at some point early in the summer? Or did she already know? Discuss. Follow up: if she already knew how to pick locks, then did she teach herself by looking up online instructions and practicing (on Dipper's locker, her parents' liquor cabinet, her teacher's car, etc.), or did her parents teach her (because if they're related to Stan, then maybe they're criminals too).

This episode really shows a prominent flaw of Mabel, that being her clinginess and inability to let go. We've seen it a couple of times already, but this is the 1st time we see it as a central focus. And I think that's a pretty important quality of hers, even if she was able to beat it here.

I think one of the boy band members is actually voiced by lance bass from nsync which (at the end of the episode there's a secret message that's something like you're welcome ariel) he did as a favor for his twin sister (ariel) who was obsessed with boy bands as a kid and especially liked lance bass OMG YOURE SO RIGHT. wendy should date girls. she's every wlw's dream she's a total badass

2:28 - *“Yes…”* - _"Maybe I should see other people."_ - *“YES!”* Notice how she said "Maybe *_I_* should see other people," not "we". After all, it's not as if _Robbie_ could find someone else to tolerate him without supernatural help. Robbie being an utter sleazebag this episode is retroactively made even sleazier by the fact that he is voiced by T.J.Miller. I guess the casting was really on-point there…

_Gravity Falls_ pushed the envelope(s) as far as Disney would let them. They laid the groundwork in whatever ways they could manage. _Gravity Falls_ walked so that _Owl House_ (et al.) could run. ;)
