It's hard for younger people to realize how revolutionary the lyrics to "You Don't Own Me" were in 1965. Women speaking for themselves just wasn't done back then...at least not in white pop music. You might have heard that type of thing from Aretha, or "Big Momma" Thornton before her, but you never would have heard it on white radio. That was an absolutely revolutionary song. Oh, and about songs from the 1960's being so short, that was pretty much because radio would not play anything over three minutes until the late '60's when the AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) radio format came into being. John Lennon famously said that his philosophy on songwriting was "2 minutes and out" The reason that 3:00 minutes and shorter were the standard was because the old 10-inch 78 RPM records that were the standard between 1911 and the early 1950's could only fit 3 minutes per side. 45 RPM records (introduced in 1949) could fit 4.5 minutes a side, but it took years for people to start taking advantage of it.

My late sister was almost 14 when that track was released. She once told me that song was revolutionary for it's time as most girl group songs up until that time had the girl worship their boy. Very rarely ever did a pop song by a young woman outwardly declare their independence.

This was a very progressive song at the time.

I grew up listening to Leslie Gore songs. She was ahead of her time. I was 15 yrs old when this came out. So many changes going on the 60's. It was quite a decade!

First Wives Club with Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn (1996). They came together after a best friend committed suicide (Played by Stockard Channing) after her husband left her for a younger woman. They decided to help other first wives by dedicated an organization to their friend. At the end they sing the song because when they were teenagers it was their song.

Lesley's first big #1 hit record was "Its My Party" produced by no other than Quincy Jones who both were signed to Mercury records at the time..Lesley and Quincy remained friends till her death from cancer..I remember seeing Quincy being interviewed and asked about Leslies recent passing..Tears flooded his eyes as he tried to describe how deeply her passing had affected him..PS The movie your thinking of is First Wives Club where the ladies close out the end of the movie singing this song...

Every song was about the same length as this one for decades. Originally there had been a technical reason for it, but even after Long Playing records were first sold in 1948, which could accommodate much longer tunes, everybody still stuck to the standard. It wasn't till The Doors did "Light My Fire" and the Chambers Brothers did "Time Has Come Today" in 1967 that longer songs started to get played on the radio, and it was considered a very big deal to hear these in their full length. AM stations only played the long versions at night, not during the day when numerous commercials had to be run constantly. After awhile, in about 1970, it became normal for longer songs to be recorded and played on FM radio.

I was 13 when this song came out and I have loved it since day one. As a young teen I felt this song to my bones. Girls back then were supposed to give in to what a Man said. Girls and women were just really beginning to speak up and becoming independent. This song really helped women to start speaking up for themselves. We were really wanting more freedom and independence.

You must probably heard this in the DC Movie "Suicide Squad" when Harley Quinn comes into the picture ... It was also redone by a singer named Grace. Now, Lesley Gore was the Princess of Rock and Roll in the 1960s. She started out at the age of 17 in 1963 (the year I was born! ) with "It's My Party". Quincy Jones was her producer and put her on the map. She had a follow up to "It's My Party" with "Judy's Turn To Cry" which I think is a better song, however it didn't reach number one as "It's My Party" did. This song "You Don't Own Me" was held from being number one on the charts by The Beatles. It only went up to number two on the charts. It was a revolutionary song for women, back then, and became an anthem. The year was 1964. Lesley Gore also was in the TV show "Batman" as Cat Woman's side kick - Pussy Cat. Unfortunately, Lesley Gore died at the age of 68, back in February 2015 from lung cancer. The hairstyle she is wearing was called The Flip and I don't know ANYONE who wore it better! :) .... In 1963 when Leslie Gore was a junior in high school she release It's My Party (and I'll cry if I want to). It went to #1 for four weeks and sold a million copies. I love how the verse starts with a triplet on the up-beat. "You don't own . . ." A feminist anthem ahead of its time, it depicts the dating mores of the early '60s perfectly. After half a century we're still fighting over this.

Teen of the 80's here. I first heard this song in one of the biggest 80s movies, Dirty Dancing! I almost wore out that cassette! Especially that song. I was such a good girl would never have thought of going against my parents wishes so playing that song made me feel like a rebel! Lol

It was the last song featured in The First Wives Club, and the closing credits. Where Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler flung open the doors ( read shaking the shackles off ) and dance down the street. Iconic part of the movie, speaks volumes and so did Leslie Gore back in 1965, believe me this was way out there for it’s time. This song really gets to me. I was in a 10 year abusive relationship, he told me what to wear, who to see, what music to listen to, how to speak, not allowed to be myself. It's true that "You Don't Own Me" is a strong message for a female to have sung in the early 1960s, but keep in mind that the lyrics of Lesley's other hits like "It's My Party", "Judy's Turn To Cry", and especially "Maybe I Know" stuck completely to the required feminine role of being subordinate to men at the time.

Okay. Here's a slightly different suggestion: Play, and react to Gene Kelly singing, and dancing to song of the movie of the same name - "Singing in the Rain". It'll put a smile on your face.

First heard this on the Ed Sullivan Show in the early 60s. She was on his show a lot and actually may have gotten famous from her appearances. Back then Ed Sullivan was “America’s Show” on Sunday nite at 8pm. Back when we had three channels (or less in some cases).

During the sixties if you dated a guy you were supposed to be committed and to get married. There were many men that were abusive and so that is partly why she did this song. Many women ended up stuck in marriages that were bad. Men would run off and women couldn't get married to anyone else until the husband was found dead. If you dated more than one man then you were considered a disreputable woman. This song helped change that.

Lesley Gore was so ahead of her time she was 17 at the time this came out in 1963 a few months after her first hit It's my party. Here she's standing up to a man trying to make her his property as it was at that time. Of course Lesley never had a husband she was a lesbian though she did find the love of her life Lois Sasson in 1982 and stayed with her for 33 years until Lesley's death from lung cancer in 2015 at the age of 68. They were planing there wedding for summer 2015 sadly Lesley got sick and passed on February 16 2015. Lois passed in 2020.

Back in the '60's, top 40 radio was king. Everyone tuned in to listen to their favorite songs. It was commercial radio, so they constantly ran commercials. The average time of most records was 3:00 minutes, or less. The less the better. That way, they could play more commercials around the music. Long songs, like Hey Jude, at over seven minutes, cut into their profits.
