Thanks sooo much for providing these videos! Your sincerity is so obvious (and amazing) in wanting to help others learn to play. In addition, your instruction is so precise! Hope to take your lessons soon. One question regarding bow holds-- what is the thumb doing as you move from tip to frog and back. Does it straighten as you move toward the tip? It has been a challenge to keep my thumb bent--any suggestions?

Yes, the thumb does straighten out quite a bit on the UP BOW stroke, and as it prepares to go DOWN BOW, it regains its curve. This is a part of the colle' motion, which is not for beginners to worry about, but I find over and over that my adults need to be aware of it....I don't know why....kids can postpone the colle', but adults can't....they seem to need it sooner. Check out my video on Colle' as well, it will also address thumb stuff! Good luck! --L

If it helps anyone else, as I do these exercises with Lora-Sensei I say out loud UPproximal for up-bow & DOWNdistal for down-bow. It helps my focus, especially when I speed it up!

Lora, when I practice the bowing with the toilet paper core as per Part A of the video, I don't have any problem getting my index finger to move from the distal to the proximal, but when I do it with the violin, it's a lot more difficult. I'm getting the rest of the hand shape change, I think. Is the index finger movement necessary? I'm 6' 2", if that's relevant.

Ahhh, smart that you told me your height. You know what....I think perhaps my shortness and your tallness WILL change the need to move your index finger. If it feels unnatural and hinders your bow control, then only do it to the extent that feels natural and helpful. Thanks for that question!!! I am only 5'2"....

Hello, thank you for sharing this helpful informations about bow holding. I just have a question (same question I asked my teacher...). Now : The bow does have a spin motion ? (because that's how it looks for me). I asked the same question to my teacher and he said: "No! keep ur bow tilted for whole motion...". I told him that for me it looks like somekinda ballistic physics because, same as a bullet who keep a straight motion because it get a spin rotation from the barrel, the violin bow get a more accurate and straight motion while moving over a string, using a spin motion... .(I just found this after I crushed my head trying to find a way to stop gliding away from the middle lane I use to play...)

+James Clouds Hi James. To answer your question, I need to know what you mean by "spin". Yes, we all tilt the bow at the frog.....but only for the lower 1/3 of the bow. As we near the middle, it is best to use flat hair. Of course, with spiccato and bouncing bow strokes, sometimes it gives an advantage to tilt the bow a little bit, but I am talking about basic, detache' strokes. Now, STRAIGHT BOW is a whole different issue. To draw a perfectly straight bow, our bow hand has to draw little "arcs" which I call "good bananas". So like ballistics, your hand is "spinning" to make the bow (bullet) go straight.

Hello. What string is the best for a good sound and if the bow loose some of the hair, the sound will be different?
@RedDesertViolin
@RedDesertViolin 8 жыл бұрын
+Marisol Diaz I like the G and D strings for best sound. It is harder to make the A and E sound nice. If you lose fewer than 10 hairs, it should not change the sound. If you lose more than that....then your sound will start to diminish, but not too badly.

Hi, Lora! I love your videos. Thank you for putting in so much effort. Can you please tell me about the thumb's motion during these bow hand transitions? Mine just starts to move all over the place when I change my now hand.
@RedDesertFiddle
@RedDesertFiddle 8 жыл бұрын
GREAT question, Vaibhav. The thumb will change shape, certainly. Specifically, in the bow hold for your DOWN BOW, where your fingers are most curved, your thumb will also be most curved, it might even curve so much that it touches the horse hair. On the bow hold for your UP BOW, where your fingers are the most straight, your thumb will also be most straight. The contact point on the corner of your thumb (where it touches the ebony and the thumb leather) should stay in place consistently. Just the shape of your thumb will change from more curved to less curved.

+Red Desert Fiddle Thank You so much for replying. Just one more thing, does the bow get tilted when you change the bow hand?
@RedDesertFiddle
@RedDesertFiddle 8 жыл бұрын
You ask great questions! Thank you for making my clarify. The tilt of the bow happens independently from the changing bow hand. For instance, I could play a whole bow from frog to tip and back again without tilting my bow at all, but changing my bow hold from that "curved finger distal contact point" shape to the "proximal straight finger" shape. The tilt of the bow at the FROG gives you better balance and better bow control, plus it avoids hitting the bridge with the thumb. The tilted bow is basically a result of CURVING THE WRIST. I tell my students as they are playing an up bow to bring their wrist toward their face, as if they were looking at their wrist watch. That's a good idea for a video....I'll see about getting that done!
