Umm, i'm a Vietnamese myself and i doubt what you have said. The smile is only when you're a tourist, and when they asks you for dinner, they thinks you're either famous or rich, so they're trying to squeeze money out of you.

Omg yes. I have heard even people who learn fluent Vietnamese still sometimes cannot be understood by native speakers. It is usually because of lack of correct pronunciation. Thank you so much for this video!

Indeed it's easier said than done. I'm still a beginner and I think I have pronunciation figured out until I try it out. Also listening to Tiếng Việt being spoken slowly and clearly by an instructor and hearing it at a faster casual pace in everyday speech makes a big difference. There are multiple Vietnamese where I work and there are multiple instances of mutual difficulty with understanding. I'm still a beginner and don't know enough to have to have a conversation. It's mostly a one way conversation. I could ask a question but their response is usually a phrase I don't know yet. So I have no choice but to tell them "Tôi không hiểu" and assert that I'm still learning. I have issues with pronouncing consistently. I can't always say it the same way twice. It's either perfect or botched. Either I didn't go high enough on the sắc or low enough on the huyền or most often mispronounced hỏi (ex: When I say "Cảm ơn ___")

Vietnamese does indeed use a lot of diacritics, some unique to this language (ơ, ư, ạ, and all their variants.). When I first saw Vietnamese written down, I way like "What the-" And when you start learning the language and the pronunciation, it does seem scary at first. But it looks worse than it actually is.

It makes this sound: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close_back_rounded_vowel It is a rounded vowel meaning you want to make sure your lips are protruded in a shape almost as if you are going to kiss someone. So, yeah, it is the sound in "shoe", i just figured I'd add a bit of more information.

For me, I can remember easily the "mid-level" tone by thinking of the 7th musical note in any Major Scale, which is "ti" (the leading tone). So for me, it really is a tone :) In fact, you are sounding the 7th note of the F Major scale in this video for your "mid-level" tone, which is the note "E" below middle "C". The 5th "low-rising" tone sounds to me like you'e sounding an octave (like from a Low 'G' below middle "C", to a "G' above middle "C"). However, t he other "Tones" are a bit more difficult, because you'e using what is referred to as 1/4 tones in musical language . Wow! Vietnamese is like trying to learn to play a new instrument! I'll probably be on this particular video for a few months!! But you're a good teacher :) Xin loi, if I got to involved with my musical explanations. Cam on´ rát nhiều.

Been learning Vietnamese for about an hour a day for 6 months. I'm starting to get better at speaking; I can have a very basic conversation. But my listening skill is the worst. Often the VIet people can understand me, but I can never understand their replies. Do you have videos on improving listening? Like starting slow and getting quicker.

For your daily learning Vietnamese, do you do listening? If you just read (by eyes) and speak (by mouth), it is normal that you cannot understand Vietnamese by listening. Your brain can understand Vietnamese when you read by eyes, and you know how to speak Vietnamese out by mouth, but your ears are still not familiar with Vietnamese pronunciation and accent. Many English learners are quite good at reading, but very weak in speaking and listening because they do much more reading than speaking and listening. How do we learn our mother language? First, we LISTEN to our parents. Secondly, we imitate and try to SPEAK out for what we listen from our parents (baby babbling) Thirdly, we go to school to learn how to READ and WRITE. The step in sequence for any language learning is (1)LISTENING→(2)SPEAKING→(3)READING & WRITING. LISTENING is the first priority, but the way for most people to learn language is (1)Reading & Writing→(2)Speaking→(3)Listening I speak two mother languages and one of my mother language is without writing. It means I am unable to learn it by reading and writing, but I still can speak it out by my mouth and understand it by listening. Why? That is because I learn this mother language by listening to it every day from my parents and speak it out by mouth since I was a child. Without writing and reading, people still can learn languages and the younger we are, the sooner, the better we can learn this language. When we grow up, we do need reading and writing as assistance for language learning, but listening is still the very priority. What I say above is my personal experience and I think it can be applied to any languages learning, including Vietnamese. Good luck for your Vietnamese learning!

The Vietnamese accent in English is often one of the hardest to understand, in my experience. The phonologies of the two languages are so different, it's the same reason an English accent in Vietnamese must be very difficult for you 😎

Does the low-broken tone have an inherent pitch increase? He just says "lower your voice as much as possible," but it sounds like he's raising the pitch back to a mid-level or so.

Is the falling tone supposed to be different from mandarin falling tone? It seems more flat rather than falling here. Is it wrong to pronounce it like the fourth tone in mandarin?

I thought nặng was pronounced as a low falling-rising tone in the Southern dialect rather than the glottalized falling pronunciation associated with the northern and central dialects. Is this based on the HCMC dialect or another Southern dialect?
@LearnVietnameseWithSVFF
@LearnVietnameseWithSVFF Жыл бұрын
The pronunciation of "nặng" may vary depending on the specific Southern dialect being spoken. The video on Lesson 2 covers the six tones in the Southern Vietnamese accent and how they are pronounced in the HCMC dialect. However, it's worth noting that different regions may have different pronunciations for certain words or tones. It's always a good idea to learn from native speakers in the specific region where you will be using the language.

@Learn Vietnamese With SVFF Believe it or not I actually find the glottalized falling pronunciation easier than the low falling-rising pronunciation. Likewise I find it easier to use the rising glottalized pronunciation of ngã rather than pronouncing it the same was a hỏi which I still struggle to pronounce consistently.

Thanks for you question! the second one (Dầu huyền) is quite slower when you lowering your voice! The Dấu Nặng (the third one) You lower your voice immediately to the lowest (as possible) and the air and the sound stop immediately!

Dứa isn't pineapple in Southern Vietnamese, just pointing it out for learners. It's trái *khóm* (khớm in some areas) or trái *thơm* depending on the variety. (Lá) *dứa* is pandan. Quả *dứa* is the Northern Vietnamese for pineapples of all varieties.

+Teh Vanarch thanks for you feedback! Actually, it's "trái thơm" for pinapple in Southern Vietnamese. However, we're trying to find a word that is easily to illustrate how wrong usage of tones can lead to misunderstand. "Dưa, dứa, dừa" all have meaning , while in "thơm", "thớm", "thờm", just "thơm" have meaning. There will be a video about differences between northern and southern Vietnamese Accent. Again, thank for your comment.

Learn Southern Vietnamese Accent with SVFF Thanks for the reply but khóm and thơm both mean pineapple. They are just different types as I'm sure you know that, being Southern Vietnamese yourself. :)
@LearnVietnameseWithSVFF

+Teh Vanarch yup! They're the same. I did mention that "thơm" is used commonly in southern vietnamese, But i didn't deny your knowledge about how they are used in other areas. It's just we don't need that in this lesson now. This is just a beginning part or the learning a language, i just want to make as simple as possible. Trust us, we live in Ho Chi Minh city, and I'm pretty sure that no one call "khóm" pineapple, unless that's person is from northern and live in the south Vietnam. :)

Learn Southern Vietnamese Accent with SVFF I understand what you mean but all I am saying is that khóm and thơm are just two varieties of pineapple. There is no distinction in English or Northern Vietnamese but there is in South Vietnam.

Fine! Captain!I I have no idea loll. But still, in this lesson: dưa - mid-level tone, dứa - high rising tone, dừa low-falling tone. "Bạn hiểu ý mình không?"
@fila3000

Yeah, even the Vietnamese native speakers can't explain the tone with the dot properly. No, it's not "lower as much as possible". It's not simple as that and if you just try to lower it a lot you will be told you're not pronouncing it correctly. I don't know yet if I got the hang of it but you can hear it, he raises it slightly at the end, when I try to incorporate a slight rise at the end I get better feedback.
