In this episode you will see me finish the quilt by sandwiching the 3 layers together, machine quilting and self binding it with Minky backing.

Just a thought. For your mitered corners. When Sewing them. If you stop a quarter inch away.. And not right to the end, you will have that quarter to turn around there. As there will be that un stitched bit. When you turn it out you will see it will be easier. Hope that helps. Excellent job though. Love it ❤️❤️❤️

Hi! I just finished a king sized quilt as a gift for a friend and she requested a minky back It was my first experience using it. I chose a smooth minky. I was very nervous at first from cutting to the 3.5 yard center seam, pin basting to the quilting. But after some research, it turned out amazing!

That’s awesome! I was most worried about the minky not staying in place while quilting, but the spray and pin basting worked just like it would with cotton fabric. Thanks for watching the series!

I can't remember if I commented on this before. It turned out beautiful. I worked with minky once when I made my grandson's baby blanket. Yes, the spray adhesive was key. Also the fact that I taped the backing to the floor helped from having it slide around while sandwiching- an extra step but well worth it. I only ended up using the normal amount of pins that I always would. You should definitely try it!

My quilt shop sells a lot of Minky. Their long arm ladies are experts with it. However, one time I brought in my own Minky. It was the dots and I’d purchased at JoAnn. They said they don’t sell the dots because it’s got far more stretch than the others, and doesn’t turn out very nice. So I learned something! Your quilt is lovely! Thanks for the video.

Looks very nice. I thought I seen some of the big blocks with just one line in it, and not a complete X. Just trying to figure out the design you used. Good job. Minky has a stretchy side to it, I was sure you’d have problems with turning it over just that little bit. My long armer won’t do anything bigger than a double size with minky, it’s too stretchy she says. It puckers too much she says.
@lessonslearnt5966
@lessonslearnt5966 24 күн бұрын
I think I did all the x’s but that was 3 years ago. I’ve not had any trouble with minky, neither on the regular machine nor the long arm, but it can be overstretched if you’re not careful I guess.

Glad I came across this video. I’m doing the Same exact thing on a quilt for my grandson. Mom wants the dimpled minky on the back also. Have been dreading it. When you sewed the lightened corner did you sew 1/4” or 1/2” seam?
@lessonslearnt5966
@lessonslearnt5966 2 жыл бұрын
I sewed 1/4” it’s a little tricky to keep it turned under to make the turn, but what you could do is not sew the miter all the way to the end leaving it easier to turn under. I really should’ve unsewn mine that 1/4” but it had just enough stretch to do it, plus the minky hides the stitches somewhat. Thanks for watching, Nancy!

Do you usually trim the batting back before you do the border
@lessonslearnt5966
@lessonslearnt5966 2 жыл бұрын
Usually, you would trim the backing and batting even with the top, but I was thinking I may need a little bulk to go along with the minky backing since I was just folding it over. Then when I decided to turn under the edge, there was no way I could handle any extra bulk in there, so I had to trim it off like normal.

@lessonslearnt5966

You have to cut off the extra after the quilting is done. The batting and backing have to be a few inches bigger because sometimes the quilting will cause it to shift a little. Hope that makes sense.

On your binding if you would use regular cotton fabric rather than minky how would you stitch that because you can't fold under?
@lessonslearnt5966
@lessonslearnt5966 2 жыл бұрын
Well I’m an old lady of 58! And still learning things! I already knew my quilt top was straight, so I just followed it’s edge. You can do the same method of binding with regular cotton. Just leave enough unsewn at those corners to turn under 1/4” and also all the way around the sides and ends. Then sew it down with a straight stitch along the very edge. Hope you can understand what I mean 😄

Just found your channel and the 3 episodes of stack and wack quilt. What kind of machine do you have?

Welcome! I have a Janome 6260QC. It’s about 15 years old. I’m upgrading to a BabyLock Jazz II hopefully this week. It has a deeper throat area for larger quilt projects.

@@lessonslearnt5966 thanks for the information. Good luck with your upgrade. I look forward to seeing it in action on future projects.

After you cut the extra batting away did you try stitching the minky/cuddle fleece without turning it under, I think it's worth testing because I don't think it would be a problem, just a thought if you've still got your scraps . Quilt looks so snuggly. 😊

I did try that on a test piece. The problem was those raised dots made the stitching look a little messy. Maybe if it wasn’t textured like that, it would’ve looked okay.

Since you cut away the batting and minky doesn't fray you could've skipped turning the edge.

Yes, that is another method I’d like to try with minky in the future. Thanks!

Do you mean minky? Minky is a polyester fabric that feels much like short, soft teddy bear fur. It can be used as backing for quilts, but NOT mixed in with regular cotton on the front of a quilt.

It’s a fuzzy fabric that can be used for plush toys and baby blankets and in this case a quilt backing.
