We’re thrilled to welcome the incredible Michael Lindsay-Hogg to the podcast. Michael is, of course, the director of the Beatles’ film “Let it Be,” now fully restored and available worldwide on Disney Plus.
Michael joined us to talk about his original vision for "Let it Be," its relationship to "Get Back," and give us the details on how he originally wanted the film to end. And of course we couldn’t resist asking him about one our favorite films that Michael directed, "Two of Us."
After the interview, we chat about our experiences at the New York and Los Angeles advance screenings of "Let it Be," and our impressions of the film now, especially in the context of "Get Back."
Warning: we'll be discussing plot points for "Let it Be," so if you wish to remain spoiler-free until you've seen the film, that discussion begins at approximately 27:00.

I'm 70 years old and I grew up with The Beatles & loved the "Let It Be" album, but for some reason I never saw the movie "Let It Be" Think I'm lucky to have seen it all fully restored on Disney + for the first time. I was very emotional hearing and seeing them perform full songs including the rooftop. It had me in tears and I couldn't even control the tears. It was a wonderful experience. It was an Ed Sullivan moment for me. By the way I only signed Up for Disney+ after "Let It Be" was released. So now I am watching the "Get Back" series.

From a film maker's prospective, when you're going to film a one and only one chance one take scene, you need as much redundancy as possible, as you can't know afterward how many shots are usable. It's great that it seems all the cameras functioned properly, all the film was processed and produced usable material.

I think it's great that you could interview ML-H and get his perspective right at the time of the re-release of "Let It Be." Nice discussion! That said, it's as though Beatles fans just feel they must somehow get their entire perspective on this project from either Jackson's or Lindsay-Hogg's movies... The problem is that they are both just movies created to entertain the viewer -- neither is completely accurate and there is quite a bit of manipulation in both. First, Yoko was not just one silent observer "doing paperwork" throughout this project. She is actually quite vocal... many times offering her opinions on the songs and the state of the band. "Let It Be" did not include any Yoko contributions and "Get Back" purposely edited her out of conversations she was a part of. In addition, she and Linda are part of the "flowerpot" conversation -- they are both there offering opinions, but Jackson edited it in such a way as though we were hearing this completely private conversation between John and Paul. In addition, the hug that the three Beatles have after discussing Geortge's departure is edited in such a way to convey comradery, strong feelings, and sentimentality... the truth is, if you listen to the Nagra reels, they are actually goofing on ML-H... They got in close to tell a joke.

@BCtheBeatles.... good morning ladies. Fortunately I lived through the 1960s, recall having seen Let it Be in the theater. It came out on VHS,and eventually circulated in a bootleg dvd format. Let it Be is now an addendum to Peter Jackson's Get Back docuseries. Glad they did clean up the video & audio, however all those crop edits and pasting the next sequence together just was seriously flawed. Having 25+ years of broadcast communication experience, if I would of tried that in My video production projects. I sure wouldn't of had much of a career. Always enjoy your podcast ladies, and so time for Apple to move on to other Beatles releases such as The Rubber Soul boxset and remastering The Anthology videos to blu ray with added footage.

Two of us set the standard for bio pictures on the Beatles. I hope the planned four pictures on the Beatles. Are able to find actors that did an amazing job as they did.

I just watched Let It Be, and I gotta say, I like the way this looks more than Get Back. I feel like they used too much DNR in Get Back, Let It Be keeps the film grain and it feels a lot more natural. That's my only complaint with Get Back, but Let It Be still holds its own even with how much footage is used in Get Back. I really wish they had used 35mm film at the time, then all you'd need is the audio separation and, in my opinion, Get Back would be perfect.

I saw let it be around 1980 in the movie theater. It was good to see at the time but indeed it felt like a document of their break up, and what I’d heard that it was mainly paul in the spotlight seems true. After seeing it again now, I am so glad for the Get Back project. Let it be just seems like a small random snapshot of what was recorded that month. I think it’s very sad and unfortunate that for all those years people only had let it be. I feel like they and Hogg could have made a much better picture. I really don’t understand most of his choices.

I agree. He concentrated on music performances and didn't include any context, not even any reasons for why they went up on the roof. He should've gone through the footage, decided on a narrative and then edited the scenes to create that narrative. Since the climax of the film is the rooftop performance, he should've concentrated on scenes discussing the project itself, so that you are building toward that. Simple. The film really needed more dialogue, not a bunch of performances of old rock'n'roll. People think those scenes are great, simply because they were not included in Get Back, but if they hadn't been in Let It Be, perhaps they would've been included in Get Back. A fan can enjoy them in retrospect, but at the time, it all must've seemed rather random. Also since there weren't very many dialogue-based scenes, it really made the discussion/fight between Paul and George stand out in people's minds and take on a larger space in the popular imagination.

Really great discussion. As much as I like the new remaster of Let It Be, the scenes that it does share with Get Back feel so short now. Like their talk about India, in Get Back there’s a whole discussion and almost argument with George about why they went and if they took it seriously enough. Jackson also shows us the home video clips that Paul is talking about. In Let It Be, it’s just a short conversation and it’s over. Same with the argument with George about how much he should play on I’ve Got a Feeling, Get Back shows us the full discussion and Paul’s frustration wanting to just get the songs structure down before adding in fills. Whereas Let It Be just shows us a snippet of the argument where Paul looks like a control freak and then it’s over. Overall, I don’t see Let It Be as depressing and Get Back as a validation of the period as joyful like they’ve tried to make it out to be. It’s more like Let It Be is this old, truncated movie MLH had to throw together to finish the Beatles contract and Get Back is the more complete story. It’s fun to watch as a historical document but so much is missing now that we have a more complete picture.

You love that scene where Paul is shot from the back, so that you can't read his face, and John is shot from the front, so that you can do nothing but read his face. I agree it's an interesting montage decision from a filmmaking perspective, but from a documentary perspective, this scene is probably the most egregious in the film. Because it forces the viewer to read into it and project their own narrative onto it. I think we can trace the whole "Paul is bossy" and "John is checked out" narrative to THIS scene. I'm sure it infuriated John, who felt he'd been cut out the film too much as it was. Because of how that scene is cut and framed, it looks like Paul is lecturing John and John is bored out of his mind and wishes he were anywhere else. The truth is, he was listening intently AND giving input. In this moment, he's a bit exasperated because he actually agrees with Paul on this issue and wishes that Paul would get to the point, instead of spending so much time on preamble. Paul doesn't know that John agrees with him and is trying to get him onside with regards to convincing George. But you get NONE of that in this scene.

I just would have loved to have met John Lennon and George Harrison. I so envy him having met them all at the different stages of their Beatle years.

Yoko wasn't "quiet". Listen to the original Nagra tapes from January 1969. She was mostly deleted from the both movies in order to not irritate the viewer ("Let It Be", 1970) and to make you think she "was quiet" ("Get Back", 2021).

Great point. I think I read somewhere that each Beatle had some input into the Final Cut of the movie and George, Ringo and Paul had made it a point that there was too much footage of John and Yoko, as opposed to John and the Beatles.
