thank you, also why did americans decide the need to call it 'electronic dAnCe MuSic' - it's just ELECTRONIC MUSIC, or DANCE MUSIC, aaAAAAA lol, they just have to acronymise everything don't they? It's strange how infuriating it is when americans ruin other cultures music, they really do go at it with some full force ability to claim they created it somehow, at the same time as turning it to sh*t. Oh god that just reminded me of the 'candy kidz' - those americans that saw europes rave scene and then tried to copy it with candy-bracelets for some reason. God. We just need to stop allowing them to dictate western culture, really. Hasn't gone well.

One thing not taken into account is the live music scene in terms of “mainstream-ness”. I may be biased because I tend to mostly go to raves/festivals, but EDM shows are some of the best produced and highest attended of any shows I’ve been to, and it gets a consistent rabid audience to continue going. In my area alone there are minimum 4 really big 2-3 day shows a year plus a dozen smaller 1-2 day events that bring in the biggest names in EDM. Not sure if that can make something “mainstream” or not, but it is most certainly popular.
@robbiedubbelman3024

EDM is as mainstream as can be... It's common denominator music... Anyone can get it because of the bombastic 4 on the floor that grounds it. I have never heard an EDM song that challenged my ears or conception of what music can be. It's just "boom boom boom" and I always imagine cannons going off shooting confetti+pyrotechinics while a mass of white people on some fucking field in Europe are jumping up and down and throwing their hands up the air in that way, you know that way, that fucking EDM arm and hand dance that they've all been doing since 2010 😒...

AOTY is so so so much better than RYM it's insane. the culture is nicer, the 0-100 rating system is literally 10x more expressive than RYM's, you can have short reviews and no one cares, there's a general sense of humor to it as opposed to RYM's heavily enforced dead serious tone, and it just visually looks better. the only real downside is that it has way less people on it (and even that is arguably a positive)

The hell is that first person on about? Like Anthony said, EDM was extremely mainstream for decades now. The second electro (not electro house, electro, which is a far older genre from the late 70s/early 80s) and Hi-NRG disco became a thing, EDM has been consistently on the charts for over 40 years.
@WiloPolis03
@WiloPolis03 Жыл бұрын
Electrohouse is one of the worst named electronic music genres tbh. Like not just because electronic music genres are obsessed with using the same prefixes and suffixes over and over again (electro, house, future, wave, etc), but the music that falls under it is neither electro nor really house

@@WiloPolis03 this. when you're outside of America EDM refers to these 'electro-' genres, prog house, deadmau5, skrillex, big commercial festival music. music without a groove lol. whereas the other side is just referred to as club/dance music is like techno, house, jungle, dnb, garage etc - the more musical, danceable and cultured side. OP is wrong when they say 'electro-house is a far older genre from the 70s/80s', it's funny how completely un cultured the average EDM listener is. @@sameerdodger You didn't read what I said. I'm not saying electro house is from the late 70s-early 80s, I'm saying electro, or as its sometimes known electro-funk, is significantly older and reached mainstream success in the hands of Afrika Bambaataa, Kraftwerk, and other electro artists of the time.

Yeah. While this is all true, don't forget who setup these laws in the us: people from big labels and music industry experts. These "sampling" restrictions have already been setup to make more sense for big then for small artists. To leave all laws out would def. Do damage to any artist out there but to say that the laws applied right now are good and only for the artists best interest....that ignorant. Haha Seriously. Try to get a sample cleared as a small artists....it's almost impossible.

About musicals! First off all everyone should def check out sideways if u like film scoring, musicals, video essays, and just music in general. Secondly, I totally get that reviewing musicals is a totally dif thing but I have to say for all the musical haters out there…. I’m sure there’s a musical for you! If you out don’t the tap dance I got rhythm type or the quirky modern teen type or the super dramatic dark comedy type or blah blah…. There’s always more. Even in mainstream there’s like bluegrass musicals and shit. Its gotten way more diverse. It’s def an art form that requires some commitment and suspension of disbelief but if you go international or indie u can find some awesome shit that suits you. Even If you don’t fall in love with theatre, or rather, musicals as a medium, I’ve seen even huge haters able to at least appreciate the art and enjoy some aspects . Also I think everyone cries listening to les mis anniversary concert wall of sound lol. Plus there’s some great comedies, even the South Park boys wrote a musical and obviously there’s Mel brooks and many many many more. Try out hadestown if you want a mainstream musical that’s a bit less pop but still very accessible

Yeah this, and also I think it’s easier to find more obscure albums there. Plus I think the stuff people on RYM champion/recommend is more aligned with my tastes, maybe that’s because AOTY skews younger with its user base and now that I’m in my thirties there’s some difference in generational tastes there. I do like AOTY though and I think it’s got a great, less toxic community. Although I’d also say the toxicity of RYM gets overstated, I think most interactions and album pages there are fine, there’s just a few that devolve into arguments

@@cyinic Technically RYM is 1-10 since you can give things half star ratings, But I get what you mean. Personally I find it _easier_ to give a rating on a smaller scale (1-10 or 1-5), Just because it requires less thinking, I can pretty easily go "Do I hate this, Dislike it, Am I meh about it, Do I like it, Or do I love it?" and then get a 1-5 rating from there, Although 1-100 is definitely more meaningful, Because with a smaller scale I'll often find myself ranking two things I enjoyed to quite different degrees as the same thing.

Bonnaroo is one of the biggest music festivals in the US and it grew from indie/alt/jam rock roots; nowadays it has a fully committed 24/7 EDM stage, multiple other fully committed EDM stages, and when there are musicians booked after midnight that play instruments, you now have to remind EDM lovers that Roo isn't primarily an EDM festival and it's okay to have non-EDM artists (yet it is easily the most represented genre). EDM festivals are now everywhere and there are EDM nights at fairly mainstream bars in most cities any day of the week...it's undeniably mainstream lol. I'm glad Fantano didn't entertain this argument.

@@kyleaustin1901 I agree with yall that Adore and Machina I and II aren't as bad as the person in the video suggests, but also they are not as good as all the albums up until Mellon Collie. Hot Take: I get the pushback on musicals. People breaking out into song and dance is not really my vibe either BUT there is a sub-genre called "backstage musical", which are films and plays about music. The songs are not a soiloquy; they're baked into the story. Movies about musicians like Inside Llyewn Davis or Once have the musical numbers feel more natural and stand on their own.

I can speak for the fact that piano is SOOOOOO helpful for arranging. I also play the violin, but it has basically no carryover to writing songs, beyond knowing how to use a violin in a song. That piano experience transfers *perfectly* onto the paper or DAW, no awkward conversions or anything.

couldn't disagree more about the Smashing Pumpkins take. Billy Corgan was always the main focus and the creative drive of them since day one, not to mention the fact that these days (or at least a few years back) both James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlain were back in the band. Corgan can't be that much of a "tyrant" if 3/4s of the original band were happy to get back together. Adore also rules.
