I revisit how to use the breathing method of smoking a pipe with a little bit better explanation of how to use it for those new pipe smokers, and those that might be having trouble implementing this method

Hey there Muttnchop Piper! My grandfather passed on and left me a bunch of old Meerschaum pipes from the 1950's and earlier. They are wonderful and well seasoned. Inside the kit of pipes he left a letter with tips on smoking and one was "The Church Organ" - it's very similar to your Breathe Method! His method specifies "Clench pipe in mouth and close mouth. Breathe in through nose half breath, then at the same time, breath the rest of your breath through both nose and pipe, with a gentle sucking force. Blow smoke out of mouth. Inhale again but don't draw any smoke from pipe, and when breathing out, breathe out through nose and pipe slow and gentle at the same time with the last part of breath". Very cool and kind of advanced, but he was an Opera Singer so makes sense!

I've done it! After a week of lighting pipes 10 times a bowl, bad packing, smoking like a freight train, tongue burn etc - just had my first bowl smoke from top to bottom, no relights, no issues, just total relaxation. Why? Mastering the breathe method. Thank you Chris. Will be having a large 18 Year Old glass of Talisker single malt scotch toasted to you to celebrate.

Thanks to your videos, you've become the person you needed to be when you first started piping for a new generation of pipe smokers! Now i get it. They are actually two separate actions, independent one from the other. Breathing method doesn't refer or is not linked to the smoking itself, as i initially thought. Breathing is breathing and sipping is sipping. Much appreciated, thanks a lot.

I discovered Mutton's videos on the breath method too early to appreciate the significance. The benefit of this extends beyond just having a cool and flavourful smoke. I thought there would be a trade off where the pipe would smoke nicer but go out more. In fact it's the exact opposite. I'd spent a lot of time perfecting the pack and light but my pipe still wasn't smoking well and I couldn't understand it. In particular the ember was burning down the middle of the bowl, with charred tobacco left around the edge, and loads of dottle at the bottom. Turns out I was smoking it wrong. It is possible to over complicate this and make it too technical. The key point is that the way you should draw on your pipe is long and gentle and slow. Pull gently for about 5 secs and breathe through your nose whilst you are doing it. That will get the bowl to smoke really evenly and all the way across the edge of the bowl. Smoking slow will also allow the dottle to dry out as the ember approaches. Now I get lovely cool, flavourful smokes with next to no dottle, and no relights. Draw long and gentle. Pulling air in fast and short will make the tobacco burn itself out rather than spreading evenly to the adjacent tobacco. Thanks Mutton!

Thank you for this tutorial. I'm one of those "intermediate smokers" who have had some problems getting the breathe method to work for me. Until now, I found that many of the Oriental blends seemed a little harsh for me, but after employing this method, I have gained a greater appreciation for them. The spiciness without the bite. Couple that with coffee or sweet liqueur like Amaretto, practically heaven on earth!

Been piping steady for almost 30years now and even being a son of a piper, he could never explain how to best enjoy smoking a pipe,so like everyone else I basically had to figure it out on my own. Love your style and helpful information. I found you on youtube a few months ago and can't stop watching your videos. So much helpful stuff! I started pipe smoking when I was 18 back in the late 80s and switched to cigars sometime in the early 2000's. I found one of my pipes in a box and recalled the sweet tobaccos and peaceful time enjoying the smoke so I cleaned it up and bought some tobacco and am enjoying trying some of your suggestions. Just finished Mississippi River Rum Barrel Aged and loved it! This weekend I'm trying Plum Pudding Bourbon Barrel Aged and can't wait. I plan to buy a new pipe for that tomorrow. In all of those early years I enjoyed a pipe, I never knew about this breath method so I tried it and it does work much better. I haven't nailed it by any means but I could get used to it for sure. Thank you for all you give to the pipe community. I'm definitely here to stay, I've missed my pipes.

That’s a great forensic insight into the breath method, and a brilliant way to explain the ‘pressure’ in and out comparing to swilling something around in your mouth. I think we all develop our own little ways around this basic method and idiosyncrasies, but this is a great place to start. One thing I like to do is clear my mind of thought as I’m doing it, which makes it a meditation too. A peace pipe.

Just wanted to say that I am really glad that you have made these videos. I'm 1 month new to pipe smoking and I'm still learning. I think the only thing I'm struggling with is how hot the pipe gets. It doesn't get too hot to where I can't hold it but it does get pretty warm. I'm still practicing and I keep watching your videos as well as others over and over just to make sure I'm not missing anything. I have seen some forums where people that use to be cigarette smokers, as I use to be, have this trouble with draw and heat. Like I said I'm still trying.
