New gear: I'd go for an Orange Super Crush ($499), Harley Benton 2x12 V30 ($255), Boss SD1 ($62,99), TC Electronic Eyemaster ($49) and a Behringer SF300 ($29). You can get that rig for $894,99. All prices from Thomann and Sweetwater. So you have about 100 bucks for shipping the cab from Germany to wherever you live in the world. You could also go for a Laney Ironheart Foundry Dualtop 60w head (saves you $70) and you use the extra money to get the Greenback Version fo the 2x12. Used gear: Laney AOR (around 300-500 bucks) or a used Peavey Windsor (should be around 300 as well), any used 2x12 with any decent speaker (should go for 200-300 bucks as well), Boss OS2 (30-40 bucks), whatever EHX Big Muff you can find (around 40 bucks) and a used Boss HM2W (around 120 bucks). Sou yopu should be good for around $700 - $1000.

my rig is a $100 crate solid state head, an old ampeg 2*15, and a couple of select dirt pedals i've bought over the past few years. then there's the "space section" which is an analog delay set as a long tail slapback/faux spring into a dimension style chorus on channels 3+4 after all the fuzz and dirt.

Yes! Ampeg 2x15 is awesome. Just like the old Sunn 2x15. Great for doom.

Man, that old Carvin is such an underappreciated gem. They don’t get the respect that they deserve. I had a Carvin bass amp combo about 25 years ago that would keep up with my giant bass stack in volume. Then, my old guitarist had the Carvin head that was the Vai signature. It was a vicious Metal amp.

Dope, you should do a video on some post-metal tones like Liturgy, Planning for Burial, Wren, The Angelic Process, Amenra, or Russian Circles, or sludge/noise rock tones like Great Falls, Colonial Wound, Modern Technology, Hands Up Who Wants to Die, or Chat Pile.

Hell yeah. Love the heavier side of post-metal and where it crosses over into the doom genre, and Russian Circles are a fav band :) If you like that stuff, check out REZN.

I keep trying to get Tayler Danley (I think that’s his last name?) to do this but he doesn’t seem interested. Ha. It seems like you could get a lot of the base tones with this rig. Just need a good clean channel and delay and reverb pedals.

Old solid state used gear is the way to go, I'm running a Marshall Valvestate 8200 (Serial number from 1994), Sunn Beta 412 (Serial Number from 1979). Totaled $600 😎

The rat fur carpet just adds an extra layer to the perceived YUK of any tone hahaha. Gotta wonder what was going thru manufacturers heads at the time. One bonus is you can stick your pedals to it and have a SLAPCHOP board :)

You can save enough more money if you're handy with a soldering iron and get the DIY pedal kit versions of these pedals!

I built the PedalPCB version of the Swollen Pickle (called the Gerkin Fuzz), and it sounds great. Fairly straightforward build. I’ve never owned the Swollen Pickle, but my build works for me.

Great demo. I had the Swollen Pickle for a long time but sold it. To me, too many knobs (inside too) and it didn't sustain as well as other fuzz pedals I had. The Goliath Desolation sounds really good, it can get nasty. That Harvester is just straight up gnarly, yet it has a mids tone knob. The Carvin surprised me, its rarely if ever associated with stoner doom drone sludge metal. Great advice for a doom rig for under a grand.

Under a $1000???... I've spent sooo much on my rig, Matamp GT150 (guitar/Bass Rig), 1974 Gibson Ripper, 1976 Rickenbacker 4001 and 2001 650D. Green Cab's, 4x12 and 2x12 plus countless pedals. I just got a tetra-fet pedal and it sounds great for both bass and guitar... shred the gnar ya'll!

I think people pay over the odds for cabs thinking there's probably not going to be much difference in price between secondhand and brand new, a lot of the time that is the case. But it's always worth shopping around a bit more for a cab. A few years ago I bought a UK made 4x12 that is loaded with UK made Celestion V30s from Ashdown Engineering/Hayden, it was ex-demo B-stock with a few scratches & scrapes, quite road worn, I paid £350 for it. Nice thing about it is that that it's a stereo/mono cab. I recently changed the grille cloth to the standard black Marshall kind. Probably the best find I've got, that I paid for.

I got a used Laney 2x12 AOR cab, that was Made in England and loaded with (the shittiest) Celestion speakers for 80 bucks. Sold the speakers for 35 bucks and got two Jensen Electric Lightning speakers instead. Now it's one of the best sounding cabs I have ever played and it only cost me a total of 245€. A couple of years ago I also built a 2x12 myself and it sounds monsterous. I just got 2 used speakers I could find (WGS and Eminence) and with the cost for materials it was around 200€ as well. I based the design on an Emperor 2x12. Now I have 2 Eminence Tonker speaker in it , so it is a 300w at 16 ohms cab and we also used it for bass guitar as well in the past. Sounded awesome as well.

Carvin amps are super good for how slept on they are. I had one for years and only got rid of it due to an issue that would have cost way too much to fix.

I was literally looking at that Carvin two days ago. I heard how awesome some Traynor amps were so it got me looking around at other budget amps. Like what's the next legendary sleeper?

The Carvin has been used on this channel from day one . It was always one of those amps you would never think to grab . As for sleepers in the future here is my take Crate Blue Voodoo , Ampeg V4 not much of a sleeper but still dirt cheap and lastly the JCM2000 .

Good stuff here! My rig has always been on a budget, and two things I would want to toss in the discussion that I have found to be great: Marshall ORI212 cabs and Demonic Machines 87 series pedals. You can pick up those cabs in flawless condition for $300 all day, and I personally feel like the Celestion 70/80s are overlooked for low end focused guitar. The Demonic Machines are solid handmade pedals from a small maker and you can get a bunch of different ones on the budget line for like $65 right now.

On the cheaps, have you tried the Fender Hammetone Metal? It’s not an HM-2 but it can give some similar corpulent fuzz-stortion vibes.

I'm starting to build a whole new rig. Last year, I bought a Blackstar amp and Black Arts Barbarian pedal, which is similar to a fuzz. Recently bought a Woodrite guitar and can't wait to get it in a few months. For second pedal thinking of a tube screamer. Will check out your suggestions.

I thought about doing a video where I just go through what my absolute dream Doom or Shoegaze (different genre) would be and which of that gear I currently have vs how much it will take to upgrade. Some of my dream gear, I’ve actually owned and had to sell! I’d love to see someone else do that too, so feel free to use that idea 🎸

The Idiot Box Heavy Weapon is a beast of a 2-in-1 (that you reviewed about 6 months ago) and seems like it could be great into that Carvin. That said, The Harvester sounds awesome!

with Malta being so small and remote it probably sucks trying to import stuff from the european mainland. i just wanted to state that we in europe have some major advantages over the US on the used gear market: Marshalls and Engl amps are literally dirt cheap over here in comparison. A full size (so 50-100 watts) Marshall JCM 2000 or some of the older Engls , either head or combo for sub 500 bucks, no problem. you just have to know the specifics of the market.

Over here in Europe the Carvin isn't that cheap. It's in the $600-800 price range. I'd rather pick an Orange Crush.

I would say, search for Peavey Valveking-head 100. They go for 200-250-ish and are great pedal Platforms. The clean sound sucks, but if you want to doom anyway...

@@stlkmertins Yes, they are dirt cheap, I just saw one for 140€, but I'm actually not in the market for a doom rig, I already have one. I was just pointing out that those Carvin's aren't exactly the cheapest over here.
