Just spent the day meticulously going through this video second by second to rebuild this in CardinalVST, and I am compelled to comment and say THANK YOU, Omri. I've been learning Modular for a year now, and trying to find substitute modules in Cardinal for the ones missing from VCV Rack was an exciting challenge, and ended up sounding pretty darn close! Ultimately, this also taught me so much more about modular in general, so again, I thank you. Wonderful gift ❣

So although I’ve had VCV for some time, this patch is my first real foray into building something with it. I downloaded the patch and disconnected all cables and rebuilt it while walking through the video. I’ve learned so much! And I’ve added some things...I added four effects and created a “send” submix so that I could bring those effects in and out. Basically it’s a primitive and limited Aux track. I see in another of your videos that there are mixers available with aux sends, but it was fun figuring out how to do it, and again I learned a lot sorting it out. I think half the challenge is just understanding the tools already in VCV. Anyway, thanks again. This is proving to be tremendously helpful!
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 5 жыл бұрын
Hey wow, that's so cool! That's a great way of learning, removing all the cables and putting everything back together. And yes, there are some mixers out there with send and receive function, but as you said, it can be fun figuring out how to do something like this by yourself. That's the beauty of a modular system :) I'm glad you enjoy what I do! Thanks and cheers :)

Great stuff Omri, as always! What this video has taught me (apart from some useful modular techniques) was to learn to give up control when creating generative ambient music. One of my problems is that I try to control every detail when I create a new VCV patch, but you kind of want to do the opposite, you want to embrace randomness without exactly understanding what's going on behind the scenes.
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, letting go is a big part of composing in my opinion, and not only generative music. That's actually what is one of the things that appeal to me in modular, the fact that composing and performing is more of a conversation with the instrument, rather then imposing yourself upon it.

This is a great video on generative patch construction. I know a decent bit about synthesis but with the expanse of modules available it can become a bit complicated. You sort of show some really useful modules while demonstrating patch construction. I will note around 20:20 when you remove the fundamental VCA. I kept it and routed a Fundamental LFO sine wave to its CV input. You get these cool rising and falling trills but its well randomized. Wonderful job!

Oh yes, it's planned for the near future :) I'm still thinking what to offer exactly, what people want...
@gesslr
@gesslr 5 жыл бұрын
Well, you have things in Bandcamp that could be offered... perhaps exclusive patches? Maybe some “how I made this song” patreon only specials...At highest levels (beyond my reach I’m sure) maybe a “I’ll review one of your patches each month and help you optimize it”. That last one could be a gateway to offering more comprehensive (and more costly) private tutoring sessions. Just some thoughts. Good luck!

Hey cool! I will check out your videos, although I'm not speaking Spanish actually... I'm sure I will find something interesting :) About the VST version. There is still a lot of time until it will be out. It's planned for version 2.0, and we don't even have 1.0 still... But I guess that I will buy it, yes. For supporting the cause, and also for recording maybe. It depends what will come until then.

Dude this is great. I’ve only been learning this a couple of days...my mind is blown! While these are really cool to build patches along with...would an idea for a video to be to build a very basic generative patch that you can then build and develop further? Kind of like a simple starting point patch?

I just tried following along with this using Rack 2. I mooostly got similar results, biggest difference was the voice using the FM-OP and the 2 Quantum quantizers sounded very sine-wavish and not as musical as yours, my Topograph voices are kind of marimba-sounding, and I had issues with the dual delay getting all wonky (though I am using a different mixer so that may be user error). I wound up deleting that and used another Pulsars to just modulate every knob I could on Plateau. Definitely a fun tutorial to follow, and I'll try building more stuff into to it to see where it goes.

I have just downloaded VCV for the first time. I am definitely going to try this patch. I am hoping that I can get VCV running decently on my all-in-one, although it only has Intel GFX which is less than ideal for VCV. If not, I may have to finally do a clean Linux install on my main PC. Sadly, some of the modules you have recommended will not work on my windows machine as it is still running windows 7.

@@OmriCohen-Music Built this one quite a while back now. Only just recently re-watched the tutorial and realized that I messed up when I was building it and didn't properly connect the V/OCT for Chebyshev. Bass came out as a repetitive throb, and I personally think it sounds better like this. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJd0e6ZqmdzPoGQ.html to hear how it sounds (I also added some "space chimes" using Neutrinode, Pallette, and a very very long reverb).

Hey man, absolutely love this, thank you - i've just been sat here for an hour listening for all the subtle variations. sublime. One thing, though - you said the pulsars should randomly select which output to modulate - with supernova mode on. mine are always selecting the same outputs - have i done something wrong?
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 5 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thank you so much! Well, I guess it has to do with the signal you run Pulsars with. The MC2 input will work with -5v\+5v in Bi mode, or with 0v\10v in Uni mode. You have to make sure the signal you use is in one of these ranges and set the mode to the right one. If you're using an LFO for example, make sure if it's Unipolar or Bipolar first, and then use it to run Pulsars. Don't forget also that the MC2 input on the left will run both Pulsars if nothing is connected to the 2nd MC2 input. Let me know if it works :) Cheers!

@@diirrtydubcakeZ if anyone else has this issue, try using a different LFO. I dropped in TriLFO by AS as the first one instead and that got pulsar to switch between all the outputs. not sure why.

Awesome tut, Omri... If I may leave a suggestion, you could solo the mixer tracks every time you add a new clustered voice, just so that we can hear exactly what that cluster is doing... It gets sort of confusing to figure out what is what in the full mix... Otherwise, real awesome stuff
