Helen Wells Artist: Sketchbooks + Art Ideas

In this video I show you how to make a simple sketchbook from one large piece of paper. The bigger sketchbook in the video is made from an A1 sheet and the smaller one is made from an A3 sheet.
I make these simple one page sketchbooks very frequently and have for many years. There is something extremely tactile and pleasing about their intimate scale. I like the fact that it’s just one piece of paper, no pressure, no expectations, it feels expansive and freeing.
The great thing is that you can make them from any paper you have that you can fold and you can make them from abandoned art experiments or drawings if you’d like to…. in the video I am using paper which is approximately 150gsm in weight.

Such a great way of using old, unwanted work. And this method avoids the problem o starting with a clean page - there are already marks that can be used as a springboard to inspire the new piece. 😀

A few years ago, you posted another video on how to make a sketchbook using a different method. While I found that method a bit more complicated (my feeble brain LOL), I really like the final book better. Which way is your favorite?

It really depends on what I’m using to make the sketchbook… this one is great for large pieces of paper and creates more pages…the other one which is here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5uBo8KFmZ6pnn0.htmlsi=ecNy2XNT0fYVqlYD is good for any size paper. I probably the original more often…I actually find it quicker as it’s only one cut…but it creates a sketchbook with half the number of pages. Xx

Fabulous! Such clear instructions…..can you share the brand of paper you are using here? Also, do you think one could use this tiny sketchbook for small collage work?

Yes you could definitely use this for collage…it’s perfect for that. Here I’m using academia/student paper from Fabriano I think it was 160gsm x
