The Weeknd is one of those rare cases like Kanye where he has the flashy a list celebrity corporate and commercial stuff down, but if you look into his work the artistry is 100 percent there. Sort of like how Nintendo is with video games.

So listen to the normal, and then the 100% Autotuned, and if you can’t really hear a difference it means the vocals were almost perfectly in-key (meaning some type of pitch correction or autotune was applied). If you do hear a big difference, then it means theres raw vocals and there actually wasn’t much autotune applied.

As a producer everyone uses a bit of auto tune, what they mean by 100% auto tune is either retune speed (how fast it corrects you) and perfect pitch so if it lets you be off by a few cents or not. Almost Every major artist has a bit of auto tune added

It’s not Autotune they use- it’s Melodyne. Melodyne allows you to manually edit notes on a grid as oppose to something like Autotune (which as the name would suggest) automatically shifts notes based on what it detects going into it. Melodyne tends to sound more natural (but it all honestly depends on how well both are being utilized in the style/context of a song).

Most artist that can sing just use auto tune for slight pitch correction , if they go offkey for a slight second that’s where the auto tune comes in clutch or again just for the vibe that the song gives off. Charlie puth does a good job explaining this in his song breakdowns.

I have recently been to his concert and not only he doesn't need autotune, he barely needs a microphone lmao. He also sang this song with a slightly different note and i fell in love with that version completely

i am a music producer and singer myself. The words “no autotune” is pretty much non existent in the music recording industry. All the artists, doesnt matter how good they sing, use some form of digital tuning to get the perfect vocals. The industry top producers always manually edit and tune the vocals using software like Melodine, while the others slap on autotune. You do not notice anything because tuning is always applied in subtle amount. Good examples of full autotune are literally all the hiphop songs that involve a rapper singing. That is what it sounds like when you use autotune in full strength; i.e a robot. This is why autotune in most of the songs are used to make the vocals perfectly fit into the instrumentals, fix minor pitch issues, and squeeze ever last drop of value from the artist’s performance :). ps. in case you are were still wondering, yes. yes the weeknd does use autotune in his songs.

Every artist uses pitch correction in studio recordings. It’s humanly impossible to sing perfectly in tune for every single millisecond of a song. It doesn’t mean these artists can’t sing. As an artist myself, I hate hearing my vocals even when they are only a couple cents off. So why not use pitch correction, especially when the tech is advanced enough to make it seem like there’s no pitch correcting happening?! Regardless, The Weeknd is one of the beat singers in the game right now. He doesn’t need/use them too often for live performances.

He already has an amazing voice, what he does is after he gets the best takes, his engineer goes in there and manually tunes the vocals just so they can be as tight as possible but you can’t tune a terrible vocal. Auto tune makes a huge difference sonically speaking, there’s different frequencies you can attain than without it. It’s easier for vocals to cut through the mix and sound more modern as well. Not to discredit the man, I see this more as inspiration to upcoming artists. If even The Weeknd uses some autotune for his vocals the sky is the limit fellas
