Happy Valentines Day! Roses are red, violets are blue ... what's better than fixing one gameboy ... well obviously, two! I know it's been quite a long time since I've done a repair so to make up for that how about a double feature? Channel viewer Joseph sent his and his sister's childhood gba sp's in for repair and a reshell. Let's dig right in and see what's up with our two new patients now that the gameboy doctor is finally back in the OR!

It doesn’t take much force to remove the hinges if you know how to do it right. It seems you already know the most crucial part is that the tabs and slots only align for insertion/removal when the screen is open to the self-supporting detent position. This makes it really hard to access the left hinge piece, which is why you need a tool like the 3D printed piece from Makho or the Bic Round Stic trick I came up with nearly 20 years ago: Press the back of a Bic Round Stic ink pen’s cone piece to retract the clips on the right hinge, then open to the detent and push the hinge out with a hex key or something that fits through the cone. Once the right hinge is out, cut the back of the cone piece down to fit snugly between the left hinge clips and the plastic rib. Open to the detent and use something thin and long enough to reach all the way through from the right side. I used a water color brush in my video from 2017. With the pen part cut down and wedged the clips should remain retracted while you open to the detent and push the hinge out almost effortlessly.

The pink one was much easier than the graphite. The graphite had quite a bit of some kind of crusty deposit in the hinges that made sliding them out more difficult than it should've been. It was probably from the same liquid that damaged the screen and corroded parts of the mobo.

@@sjm4306 It would’ve been murder for the LCD itself but I wonder if a good ultrasonic bath might’ve helped with everything else. :)

Probably, but my ultrasonic cleaner is packed up like most of my other equipment. I just moved in december and am still unpacking lol.

Great work. On the point of the hinges though, Jake Simmons has a great video where he gives an indepth guide on an sp shell replacement and shows how you can remove the hinges much more easily so as to not damage the original shell at all :) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nMt2eqeHvL_chWw.html#t=7m28s timestamped for convenience

I've removed tons of hinges without damaging the plastics, this particular one had something that seeped into the hinge plastic crevice and caked inside as it dried basically acting like a cement. This coupled with the aging plastic made it brittle enough that I had to apply more pressure than normally necessary which snapped the surrounding plastic.
