Let's Fix the Invasion Dragons - Re-Cycle #1

Re-Cycle is an EDH design based video series about redesigning and rebalancing cycles that are unbalanced, or adding new cards to cycles that never finished.
Today we're going to be rebalancing the Invasion/Planechase cycle of dragons:
Crosis, the Purger
Dromar, the Banisher
Darigaaz, the Igniter
Rith, the Awakener
Treva, the Renewer
Teneb, the Harvester
Numot, the Devastator
Vorosh, the Hunter
Oros, the Avenger
Intet, the Dreamer

Darigaaz, artwise looks the coolest out all of them but Vorosh is my favorite.

I’m actually gonna skew the curve on this one, and hear me out on this, Treva does need a redesign. Getting that 1 life per permanent on the board is nice but if ideally you want to end the game in three hits with a commander that is so close to 7 power you’d want to beef him up. Otherwise you’re wasting the commander damage potential. Alternatively (and trying to keep in spirit of what the state of the game looked like then) “choose a color. when Treva deals combat damage, you may pay (2w). If you do you gain 2 life for each permanent you control of the chosen color.” This wouldn’t take away from building your own board, which white and green love doing but also leaves it open to other play styles that aren’t directly related to what your opponents have up.

While I agree with dromar, I think a better way to rebalance darigaaz would be to change the 1 damage per card of chosen color to player and instead be 2 damage to any target for each card of the chosen color. Suddenly an unprotected swing from Darigaaz could be a powerful burn spell on a creature or Planeswalker as well.

I agree - the versatility of "any target" makes it much more of a threat, and 2 damage is especially potent. I still think it's a little close to Crosis's design, but this at least feels like a more useful burn avenue than what it was before.

funny enough with the Darigaaz I think even leaning more into the red and changing it to "choose a color and then Darigaaz deals X damage to the player or creature that player controls. X is equal to the number of permanents of the chosen color that player controls." Granted I don't know how balanced it would be. I think it would be very devastating against a Rith deck but against others it would more reasonable or at least I think it would be.

The original cycle had the best tri lands in the game(Lairs), and they never did ones for the wedge dragons

Forgive me I may be misunderstanding the rules, but for Darigaaz, is it not true that the damage he does with his ability is commander damage? That feels really good to me. I think people often forget that when an ability says “name of monster deals 1 damage” it’s still damage coming from the commander.

Unfortunately/fortunately no. Commander damage is solely the damage dealt via combat but not anything that is dealt from abilities. Otherwise Niv-Mizzet would be phenomenally unbalanced
