i think 2 unique gems make for the best combos, with emphasis on ability mixing being more valuable than raw strength (garnet oddly counting as one as she is so uniquely unified and her duelness makes her act as an nitro boost-why sugilite and sardonics are that much more powerful while still being distinct in personality). alexandrite is a bit of a mess and probably looses power fighting her crowded clustermind- i'd wager sugilite would be just as powerful or more so, punch for punch with the only advantage that alexandrite has use of opals bow for long range attacks.

Guys I meant more along the lines of what/who was their first encounter with a unstable fusion, like did they meet sugilite before sardonyx?

Well Amethyst (at least our Amethyst) didn't join the CG's until after the war, so if Garnet did fuse with a different Amethyst (Bismuth talked like they had a few) then it would be a different Sugilite, and thus she'd have a different personality. So it's safe to say the Sardonyx we know showed up long before the Sugilite we know was first formed. Also, Sardonyx isn't really unstable, she didn't try to take control away from her components like Sugilite did, and the time she broke apart in "Know Your Fusion" was because she felt guilty for taking the spotlight away from Smokey. That wasn't instability, it was just a mistake on her part. I'd say stability wise Sardonyx is probably the most stable we've seen (ignoring Garnet, Rhodonite, and Fluorite) except for maybe Smokey and Rainbow Quartz. Opal can break apart at a moments notice cause of Amethyst's and Pearl's clashing personalities, Alexandrite is hard to hold together, Sugilite I already talked about, and Malachite... she's her own type of issue altogether.

It's in the earthlings (kinda). When Steven and Amethyst fused they didn't knew who are they but shortly after thinking about it they somehow knew that they are Smoky Quartz. So probably they just know what kind of gem they are samimiliart to the non fused gems when they're made. When they burst out of the ground they have to know what to do, who to obey, what type of gem they are and their "serial number". x3
