I like that you share your "oops" with us as well as your final projects. I, too, always do a prototype to test the pattern and familiarize myself with the technique. Thank you for a great little pin/clip cushion tutorial!!! Too cute.

I think it’s very important to show our oops. It’s good to know that everyone makes mistakes and how to fix them when they happen. Because I know I’ll make mistakes I sew prototypes. 😉 I’ve made the mistake of using my “good” fabric the first time I’ve made an item and then I was upset when It didn’t turn out right and I was out of my precious fabric. Now I practice on non special fabric or something I have yards of. Happy sewing!!

I love these pin Cushing. They are so cute and look easy enough to make. You could make them all year and use and use them for little special gifts or to add as something extra to add to another gift. You make some really cute grafts as well as your quilts etc. Thank you for sharing your ideas.

Thank you! Yes, these make fun gifts even if the person doesn’t sew. Made with their favorite fabrics they can sit out and look beautiful. You can also add a little lavender or essential oils to make them smell nice.

Love this idea, was thinking maybe put the flaps a quarter of an inch from the edge all the way around that way there are 4 flaps and the center for pins. Thanks Robin.

I love this idea. When I do this, I plan to sew the flaps on the right side of one square first and then add the second square right sides together. That way I should remember to put the flaps in the right place AND I will have an opening on only one side of the flaps to close with hand stitching. Can you tell what mistakes that I usually make? 🤔 😉 🤣

Thanks Susan! Sometimes I think showing the mistakes is the most important part. We so many perfect projects on Facebook and Instagram that we wonder if anyone else makes as many mistakes as we do. I’m here to prove that we makes lots of silly mistakes. 😂

A tip that works well for me, when I need to leave an opening for turning or stuffing, is to mark where I want to start/stop sewing with double pins. Maybe not everyone has this problem with zoning out and forgetting to NOT sew the opening closed, but it happens to me too often! So since I started putting double pins at the start/stop place, I am way better at noticing the time to quit sewing before I sabotage myself!

Watching you make these was like watching myself using different fabrics haha! After making 4 and quite a few of those other long scrappy/strippy ones, my ladder stitch has improved greatly, yeah! I've also thought about making one of these with more than 1 flap, so will try that idea out tomorrow. Not much sewing done this week as house repair was going on, a day trip out and today some gardening work as the sun was out and warm for a change. Hope you have a nice weekend :)

Thank you for the kick in the butt to make some of these. I have an idea for more flaps that I’ll hopefully try out this weekend. I’m hoping to make the flaps easier to use even when they get stubborn and flop down 🤔. I might need to bring out the magnifying glass in order to improve my ladder stitch. I working in the flower beds the other day before the temps took a nose dive. It felt nice to be out in the sun and not sweltering. Enjoy your weekend!

Since we are talking about pincushions, i'd like to share my own favorite pin cushion hack. Instead of using batting to stuff my pin cushion with, i prefer to use a mesh hair bun shaper. It's a plastic thing that looks like a scrubbing pad, used for making hair updo's. They are made to allow bobby pins etc. to stick into them easily, to hold hair neatly over them. I found that pins stick into it just beautifully with no resistance, and it has a very satisfying feel to it when poked with pins or needles. I covered mine with a stretch denim, and it is a real joy to use. I have long hair and have always been into vintage hair styles and updo's so I always have some of these around the house.

I don't know why they stopped using sand in pin cushions. My grandmother said they helped keep the pins sharp. Also I just read somewhere a few weeks ago that you could use steelwool to help keep pins sharp. I might try it. Thank you for the idea for the clips. 😊
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 4 жыл бұрын
I have heard that using steel wool is good for your pins. I don’t remember why everyone was saying to not use sand anymore. It could have simply been that the sand was working its way through the fabric or seams 🤷‍♀️. I’m not sure. There are several options for stuffing pin cushions. I’ve heard great things about crushed walnut shells or lizard litter. As long as you don’t have any but allergies.
@jessig50
@jessig50 4 жыл бұрын
I have used the steel wool. I learned about it many years ago. The only problem is that if you live in a humid area, it can rust and come through the fabric. Also, get onto the pins.

This isn't related to this KZfaq, but just to let you know Marie. I use Elmer's Washable school glue in the stick to adhere batting to fabric. It doesn't gum up your needle and works really well. It's also used in a lot of applique machine embroidery. I can't handle the spray adhesive smell.

I love the idea of the flange to hold clips! My take on your design was to wonder if adding two or more flanges at once might be helpful, to hold more clips. Since the flange will always flop to one side or the other, having two flanges means each could flop to an opposite side and not interfere with one another.

I love this pin cushion!! I need one to hold some clips.. Right now i have them in a tin and if I need one.. I have to pull it out grab a clip.. So much better if I can store some on a cushion like this. Question... Looks like you have the bottom larger than the top.. Is that because of the fiber fill? If yes.. How much larger is the bottom from the top?? Thanks again for a great project.. I'm gonna whip one up this weekend!! ☺
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 4 жыл бұрын
Because of the center seam the top shrunk a bit. I chose to cut both pieces at the same time and the same size but you could wait to cut the bottom or cut the bottom piece a half inch smaller. I found it easier to trim the excess after sewing.

Good morning Miss Robin, This pin cushion is...beautiful !! Than you so much for showing us this brilliant ,gorgeous pin cushion tutorial. I never though to add to the center that piece to hold my sewing clips. As you were showing us how to sew it, my brain was thinking...how would it hold up ADDING 2 little LOOPS as the center as you sewed, to HOLD your pencil, so when you are marking fabric, it does not roll out, or disappears on the table? Thanks again, I will give this project a try, it looks fabulous ! Looking at it, makes me want to pick up my sewing kit, and get...sewing. Josefina Mccarty

I like your idea of adding pen loops! I'm always misplacing my pens, no matter how many I keep around! For a square pincushion I'm thinking maybe adding pen loops to the edge might be even more useful though, as it would not interfere with pins being stuck in the top and wouldn't overbalance the cushion.
@Marialla.
@Marialla. 4 жыл бұрын
@@rsislandcrafts Josefina's idea of pen loops reminds me that I'd love to request a project, if you are interested! I sing in choir, and have to carry a binder of music. I also need to carry a pencil, and maybe also an erasable Frixion highlighter, to jot notations on my music sheets as the director requests. Some kind of organizer would be nice for the front of my folder. It would need to be thin, have three holes for the binder rings to to through (just like notebook paper) and would be nice if it also had a place to keep a small pack of 3-M Post-It-Note page tabs, which I use to label the edge of my pages to flip quickly to a song. Obviously this is only a gentle request, given in case you don't already have a hundred small projects you already want to make!

Basically a zipper pencil case like we used to have when we were in school? I was looking at one of those recently. I can add It to my list. I don’t have a grommet tool at the moment so It might take some time. I do have an adaptation to a previous project that might work for you for now. Let me stew on It for a bit. Thanks for the idea!
@Marialla.
@Marialla. 4 жыл бұрын
@@rsislandcrafts Something like that, yes. But it would be better for me if there were pencil sized pockets on the outside, so I could quickly whip a pencil or highlighter in or out without having to unzip it. I'm usually juggling the folder in one hand, and trying to grab supplies with the other hand, and we are squeezed into pews without table space, and we have to move fast. And the pencils need to be secure if you turn the folder upside down because that happens a lot too.

They’re fun and quick. I’m still not a fan of closing the hole so I may need to come up with a different solution. I went to my post office yesterday and had a surprise or two waiting for me. Thank you so much!!! You managed to fit a good deal of awesomeness into that box. Your bags are gorgeous. I love how you used your scraps and the vinyl. I recently saw a design that used the zipper as a handle and I thought It was brilliant. Every where I looked there was another little bit of beauty. I’m very sorry for your loss. Having your sister also be your best friend must have been amazing over the years. We were never raised to be friends with our siblings but I can imagine how special that bond would be. You brightened my week considerably. Thank you 💗

Very nice! I had a thought while watching you make these. What if you sewed the flanges around the four edges, then the middle would be free for more pins and you could clip more fabric clips. Then I thought (scary right) how about the flanges being in a flower petal shape. Okay back to studying for Psychology (even scarier). Blessings.
