For small items like this you can also cut boning from used round plastic food containers like butter, sour cream, etc. Works great. If you need a longer piece, just cut in a spiral.

I made one just like this but a much longer "hinge" and heavy pellets in the pincushion and gave it to my dad to use as a remote control holder!!! The hinge lies on the arm of his recliner with the weight resting on the inside of the chair, about where the cushion and the side meet. The bag rests along side with a few remotes in it. Perfect.

Hi Rob, I made one of these and LOVE IT. I also made a matching pad for under my sewing machine for tools (Jenny Doan's tutuorial). Here are a couple of things I added to this pin cushion and thread catcher. 1) I sewed a rectangle approximately 3" x 4" in half and turned it inside out. Then I sewed the top of the rectangle to the tab between the pin cushion and the bag to make a flap of material so that I had a place for needles. Since needles don't have any tops like pins, they tended to disappear into the pincushion. 2) I slid a 16 oz solo cup into the bag to make it easier to empty the thread and fabric scraps. 3) I didn't have boning and had thrown all of the strapping from mailed packages away (ugh) so I cut up a gallon milk gallon into strips and it has worked well in place of the boning!. When I make the next one, 1) I am planning to put the walnut shells into a muslin bag and then into the pincushion sleeve because with a light colored fabric, the moving the pins in and out of the walnut shells discolored the pin cushion over time and 2) I will add a rectangle of plastic shelf liner to the bottom of the pin cushion or if I make a sewing machine pad with it, I'll add a little velcro to the bottom of the pin cushion and the sewing machine mat so that the pin cushion doesn't slide off the table.

Nancy Powell , just the comment I needed to see! I was wondering how to make it so that it wouldn't slide off of the table I was thinking maybe some sort of non-skid material like is used in slippers?), and the idea for needles is awesome! Thanks for posting.

Rob, I love watching your videos. High energy, fresh ideas, and I love that you use simple everyday items (straps for boning). Repurposing is a GREAT thing. You can also insert 2 door hinges into the pin cushion before adding shells. It is added weight and lays flat. Sewing in a magnet on the top side of the pin cushion will be a great and convenient place for thread snips. I love someone's idea of the rubber shelf liner to prevent slipping. The possibilities are endless. Here is an out-of-the-box idea, using heavier "man" material, the pincushion instead is left open on both ends to slide a belt through. Attach to your belt when fishing. The catcher can hold worms either in a plastic bag or the plastic container the come in and outside pockets can hold a small folding knife (for cutting the fishing line) and anything else you want at your side so you don't have to go in the tackle box every time.
@gabrielbennett6079
@gabrielbennett6079 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's a great idea soul60s3. I am planning out my tackle pouch even as I type. Thanks for the idea!! Here's an idea in turn: I bought a pack of mechanics gizmos at Walmart. There is a magnetic bowl, magnetic telescoping wand and my favorite, a grab-it wand that is about 2ft long. When I need to turn right sides out, I stick the grabber into the opening and push the button and a claw grabs and holds the fabric that needs to come back through the opening. Speeds up the process and then I used the telescoping wand to push corners out.

Rob,thanks for the great tutorial! Something else you can use in place of boning, is the straps used to bind lumber. It works great, easy to come by, hardware stores just throw it out & are generally willing to let you take as much as you'd like. Bonus - albeit very little less trash in the landfill. Keep us the great work! You are very much appreciated & loved.

Love this tutorial! I have made several of these weighted pin cushions with scrap bag attached as little gifts for family and friends who think they are great! It's fun to mix and match various fabric designs and colors, plus it's a good way to use up smaller, leftover pieces. By the way, I enjoy all of Rob at Man Sewing videos. Hello Rob, I am newish to quilting. I just watched the tutorial on the sewing machine pad with pockets that Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilting Company made and I am thinking this would be cool to attach to the pad itself with a pin cushion scrap bag combo off the side of it over by the right side of the machine. Looking around for other innovations to add to the sewing machine pad. I need to remember to leave room for the function of the machine and for me! Thanks for your enthusiastic caffeine driven tutorial! This one made lining a bag look easy. Thank you. Man Sewing is something most women, I think, would like to see more of.

Rob, These bags are great and practical. I agree, we all need several. It might be helpful to use your free arm feature of your machine while stitching the casing for the boning. Absolutely love your teaching style!

Watched several videos and decided on yours. Being a rather occasional sewer, I was sure I would give up after trying to make the boxed corners. Thanks to your style of explaining, I was able to make six thread catchers. Thank you! 😊

I bought ome of these at a craft show in Kalamazoo, Mi. in May and just loved it. My 89 YO mother had a trash bag by her recliner and I ended uo giving it to her to use instead. Now I can make myself one! I think hers has sand in the 'pin cushion' part.At least it felt like it.Thanks for an informative and not scary video! I think I can, I think I can!!

My daughter made me one when I bought her first sewing machine when she was 7 as her first sewing project. She added a heavy duty magnet (in a hidden pocket) under the pincushion, as well in a pocket between the main/lining fabric. adde another pocket of leather for small thread scissors. For the top stitching portion around bag, and pincushion ends she used a decorative stitch. She added the magnet, because I have a magnet stip mounted to my table for pins. Sorry I have no picture because this bag was lost in a tornado in 2012.

You don't know me but I just wanted to say I'm sorry. God is always there so just look up don't look down. He is going to provide you with what you need if you can humble yourself and ask Him. sorry I'm blunt but I do understand. Keep your chin up! cj

Cynthia Byers, you don't know me, but I would like to respectfully respond. Your belief that god is always there has absolutely no facts behind it. There is simply no proof that there is a god, or that he dictated the bible. At least not yet. This irritates me because this is a sewing video, not a forum for you to try to tell people about god. You don't even know if Shari believes in your god. She may believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster ruling the galaxy. Or she may have been comforted by your comment; I don't know. Sorry, but it bugs me a lot when people try to "convert" me and others to their god, or just tell people to reach out to god, in an inappropriate place. If we want to learn about god, we will go to the church of our choice. No offense intended, just my thoughts. No matter where I go on the internet, people try to tell me to reach out to god. I am kind of sick of it. They also come to my front door all the time. Enough is enough. I will probably get "crucified" for my comments, but, as I said, I do not wish to offend. It is just that we all have our own beliefs, and some people don't like to be constantly told about god. Rob, I enjoyed your tutorial and will make one of these for my sewing studio.

Great informative video with lots of humour! Thank you for taking the time to explain the step-by-step process. I usually watch a video and then turn on Closed Captioning so I can take a few notes along the way and you are one of the very few people who provide clear and concise Closed Captioning. A lot of people use the CC option only to realize its a bunch of mumble jumble. You've got a new subscriber!
