So, just for clarification regarding the "Tactical" dice (the ones you place by the Mechs to denote modifiers): - The color of the die indicates the Attacker's movement option. So if the Mech walked, you use a white die. That tells you at a glance (independent of the number showing on the face of the die) that it will add +1 to its Target Number when it fires at a Target. If it ran, you would use a black die (and will add +2 to its Target Number), and if it jumped, you would use a red die (which means it would add +3 to its Target Number). - The number the die face shows indicates the modifier an attacker would need to hit the Mech based on the distance the Mech moved in hexes (not just the Movement Points used). So if your Locust ran and used all 12 movement points to move 10 hexes (using two of its 12 movement points to change facing twice during the movement), you would place a black die (for running) with the number 4 (from the "Moved 10-17 hexes" section of the chart) showing on its face. Thus anybody firing at the Locust knows they would add +4 to their Target Number to hit it, while the Locust will automatically add +2 to the Target Number for anything it tries to hit. Hopefully that all makes sense! :-)

The color coding is really cool idea. We with friends used two dices - face is being shot modifier, back of mech - shooting with this mech.

Good news, in IntroTech, an ammo hit is a dead mech any. Really, the best spot for ammo is the head, since you will still have most of a mech, even if a ton of MG ammo goes off.

13:35, btw you cant "pivot/walk" then "jump" you must select the movement mode before doing anything, so in this case it would be Jumping movement. When you jump you can go any direction and choose the facing when you land.

Yeah I did notice that you were only looking at the heat sinks in the legs which are external heat sinks, all engines for mechs have built in heat sinks too, the total is in the top right of the Heat Data block on the bottom right of the sheet. The Catapults had 15 single heat sinks so can dissipate 15 points of heat each turn, so alpha striking with them actually isn't that bad. Though I know this is waaaaay too late, just thought I'd mention it.

Rules notes: 13:20. When jumping you don't need to pay for turns, so the Catapult could have been one hex further over Around 18:00. For line of sight, a woods hex on elevation doesn't block line of sight, it just counts towards the three light/one light and two heavy/two heavy woods for blocking line of sight. Also, if you're occupying a woods hex it doesn't count for _you_ determining line of sight and hit numbers, but it does count for your enemy. It's a very common tactic to try and find spots for your fire support and sniper mechs where you can occupy a wood with a 1-level elevation change between you and the enemy, so you can stand still, get a +2 or +3 modifier for enemies to hit you and you get nothing. 25:00 Mechs always have heat sinks in their engines that aren't on the record sheet. The total heat sinks are listed on the bottom right of the sheet in between the heat modifiers table and the heat scale. At 26:21 you can see the Commando has 10 heat sinks in total and at 26:26 you can see the Catapult has 14 heat sinks. These are marked as Single because at more advanced tech levels there are heat sinks that take up the same weight but more space and dissipate 2 heat each instead of 1. 28:40: there's no movement point penalty for leaving a woods hex, the Locust would have had 1 more MP to spend 31:00 or so, depending on the Shadow Hawk's facing, the Locust is either in the left arc (If the Shadow Hawk's front hex side is facing hex 2210, or rear if the Shadow Hawk's front hex side is facing hex 2310) . Assuming the Shadow Hawk is facing hex 2210, then the Locust would need to get to hex 2513. If it was in hex 2412, because it straddles the rear and left arcs the defender gets to decide which facing takes the damage. Usually people paint either the front or rear hex side of a model to differentiate it and allow for people to quickly show facing. (I do the rear hex in white) 42:00 after rolling a double 1 for location or if you hit internal structure, you roll 2d6 to see how many critical hits land - 2-7 is no crit, 8-9 is one, 10-11 is 2, and 12 is 3 or if the roll is on a limb or the head the location is blown off. 42:47 The number of shots in a missile bay is the number of salvoes, so that full SRM bay is 100 missiles. If you hit a bay that has only fired one round, it explodes for 196 damage. Which is academic because the Shadow Hawk couldn't take the 96 damage should it have had 48 missiles in it when it went up anyway. A common house rule is allowing players to short-load weapons like SRM 2s, LRM 5s and machine guns so they're not essentially bombs waiting to go off. 43:30 or so: Ammo explosions only transfer inwards towards the centre torso rather than outwards. However, the effect of the explosion is pretty much as you described - a mech killed by centre torso destruction via an ammo explosion or artillery hit is totally unsalvageable for campaign play.

@@GuerrillaMiniatureGames I know what you mean. Like you said in the video BattleTech's core rules aren't that complex, but when you start to layer on additional units, special case rules, weird weapons and so on, you end up toting a bunch of heavy hardback rulebooks (or a tablet with large PDFs these days). I love that with TacOps you can play a game where a pair of battleships are firing at each other while mech forces jump between them trying to engage in a boarding action. _During a rain of frogs_. I would never play that game because it'd take an hour to do a turn, but I like that the option is there... I think the most outlandish ones my group have played included fighting in the crater of a recent nuclear explosion (I made a custom map), and using a Warship to provide orbital fire support in the same campaign (it was a 3x2 map with 4 of the heavily built up city maps at the bottom. The WarShip fired one shot from each of its side weapons as it passed overhead, and with those few shots I levelled the city and destroyed many friendly and enemy units. Too bad I was nominally defending the city...

Years and years ago, with the original game, we'd photocopy the mech sheets then slip them into plastic page protectors and use either a Vis-A-Vis (overhead projector markers) or grease pencil to mark the damage tracks. Just a tip for you to save paper and lots of copies! A 'torso twist' is easy to mark with a small triangle cut from card or paper & placed in the appropriate direction, instead of using dice.

I just recently played my first ever match with this rule set with my dad. We didn't get to finish, but I did get to witness an incredible moment. My locust had just emerged from a canyon corridor, right in front of multiple enemy mechs. Probably a bad decision in retrospect, but I was inexperienced and thought the Locust' speed would protect it. I was, for the most part, correct. It was put under fire but deftly dodged round after round. However, such luck never lasts, and my opponent's Commando managed to land a full volley from its SRM 4. One missile struck the Locust directly in its center torso, *through the armor* and exploded on the mech's internal components. The Locust' engine took only minor damage, but the gyro was instantly destroyed, and the mech was sent crashing to the ground. It landed on its left arm that had been damaged in the same attack, the fall peeling away the remaining armor and crushing the machine gun and actuator inside. I could only watch, as that single attack lead to dice roll after dice roll that gradually unveiled how truly screwed my poor Locust was. My mighty Battlemech, champion of the 31st century battlefield, was reduced to a writhing pile of scrap by a single lucky missile. It was at that moment I knew: I am going to love this game

I just turned 41 and I remember playing Battletech in 93 or 94. My neighbors were older teenagers and had a garage with shelves of crazy great painted pewter miniatures for all types of games including Warhammer 40k but basically I played Battletech once and I was hooked. It was much more straightforward to learn than Dungeons and Dragons, you didnt really need a Dungeon Master DM to guide the story although you could. But it was all straight up damage and you imagining getting actuators blown off when 2 seconds ago you were firing PPCs or Pulse Lasers and ripping off something on your opponents mech and it was all documented so nobody could do the "revisionist remembering" previous turns 😂 the damage system in Battletech was so much more interesting than the simple hit points model that D&D used. I would totally buy this starter kit, great review and im glad they used the older art and stuck with a lot of those original mechs like the Catapult, Awesome and what looks like a Centurion.

The modifier to be hit is based upon hexes moved, not the movement type. So, for example, if a Shadowhawk ran forward 7 hexes, the modifier to hit that Shadow Hawk would be +3, not +2. Additionally, this applies to jumps. If you jump 5 hexes, it would be +2 to be hit from 5 hexes and +1 from jumping, for a total modifier of +3 to be hit.

When you are calculating heat you are shorting yourself a bunch of heat sinks. Just count the bubbles next to the heat tracker. That's how much heat you sink. Generally engines come with 10 heat sinks that are not on the crit spaces because they're part of the engine. So if you're seeing 5 sinks on the crit chart you can probably sink 15 heat.

My favourite game. I tried a channel to promote it (and some other games) but for the moment I can´t. I specially like your comment about the game allows you to design your own mech (something I love) or modify an existing one (for example you can try swapping the shadow hawk AC and ammo for a PPC or a Large laser and some heat sinks or extra jump jets to see how it performs). This game is very hardcore and if you want to play with a lot of mechs you need to spend the entire day playing the game but is very rewarding when you try a mech you designed that became the mech of the match! :)

A few things on the crits. A double 1 for hit location is known as a floating crit, you roll again to determine where the hit actually landed and then roll for a possible crit on the crit table for that location along with resolving damage to that location normally. Also you kept mentioning getting crits with a double 1 on the hit location table, but you also roll on the crit table whenever you do internal structure damage as there is potential you hit something important in the process.

Ammo Explosion is absolutley rigged. I am so happy I did not back it, cause I do not like this kind of randomnes. On the other hand I am very sad, Battletech is one of my favorite background, if not the most favorite. Thumbs up for this awesome battlereport, love it!

To be fair he did forget a step. He rolled 2 on a 2D6, which is a "Through Armor Critical Hit". It basically is a free CHANCE to crit before usually having to blow the armor off for a chance to crit. He was supposed to make another roll to see if the hit causes a critical, most of the time it doesn't. So in reality they happen way less frequent then you think.

Battletech is actually stable in how it performs statistically. 2d6 Yield a pretty nice bell curve. Through armor criticals like the one in the video are incredibly rare, need another step to that shaves a lot of the probability off and it needs to hit ammo, which is again incredibly lucky. Could just as easily have hit the engine or a gyro and resulted in something far less spectacular.

I know that I'm late to the party, but I felt that I should pipe in anyways. The Battletech "A Game of Armored Combat" box set comes with two map sheets. Grasslands #2 and #3 and on the other side is Deserts #2 and #3. That way if you also get the beginner box you would have #1,2 and 3 of each respectively.

This is a longshot, but I would love to see you try Alpha Strike rules on the hex map. I think it would be the sweet spot for attracting new gamers to BT in general. The good news is that Alpha Strike doubled movement for some reason, so the movement conversion back to hexes is easy. Just divide movement inches by 2 to get the number of movement hexes.

You appear to be using the dice incorrectly. White dice represent a Walk (so the A is a 1) and you set the die number to the modifier they put onto other attacks against them using the number on the dice. So if a mech walked 4. You put a white die down (A = 1) and set it to a 1 (T = 1). If the mech had walked 5 you would instead put the white die down on a 2. Etc.

Love me some BattleTech. I will say as someone who played a bunch of OG BattleTech back in the day, I think like the Alpha Strike rules more. It's a lot cleaner, streamlined ruleset that doesn't have so many moving parts to get bogged down in.

So this video convinced my friend and I to jump into Battletech after 20+ years of passing interest. Why? Why have you done this to me? Decades of lore, gaming, editions and knowledge. I feel like I could write a dissertation on just which books I need to build a list and play the game! All jokes aside, we're having a blast diving into it, but damn is there a rabbit hole to go down for this game.

I like to play to both. It’s the only way to realistically play the game in a reasonable time if you are larger than lance on lance. The rules can be modded very easy for individual house rules, too. To each their own, of course! But I feel AS makes reasonable abstractions to streamline play. I’d much rather play a company on company game in 3 hours rather than a lance on lance game that could take the same amount of time or longer. I do agree there are aspects that BT does better, but at the cost of longer play time. For those with 12+ hours to kill, you could maybe get a company v company done. I’ve been a Bt fan for 28 years and never played one to conclusion. In AS, I have.

I'm surprised the Jump move doesn't require a piloting skill check like earlier editions. We seemed to always have bad luck when jumping because of poor piloting checks and damaging our legs so we rarely ever jumped. Guess we weren't alone if they removed that skill check requirement.

I really want to get into battletech. I’m not quite sure if I should start with the beginner set or just buy the full version like in this video. Ash does a great job presenting the game but I have long since outgrew (maybe tired is a better term) the game. The BattleTech series of videos presented by Ash are probably some of the best available to demo the game and given the many cons I have visited I would say better than what Catalyst and some of their volunteers have offered to new players. I remember in the late 80s starting a game on Friday that would end on Sunday. I played it with a room mate as a freshman in college and then after college just gave up. There are so many other games I feel are better ruleset wise. My issue with BattleTech is that it has grown too large and the stewards of the games and rules at Catalyst never bothered to modernize the game they just keep adding rules. If you follow the ruleset it is the game with never ending errata. I tried to play again when the BattleMech Manual was released. From version 1 to version 2 there was some 14 pages of errata. In version 2 there are now another 14 pages. The Catalyst site except for the news section is often many years behind in information. The game just wears me out with the hundreds of dice rolls and tables but most of all the book keeping headache. I feel the heat aspect was a needless mechanic and we often played without it. I don't know that Alpha Strike is any better I just know that nobody except my brother would ever want to play and that is purely for nostalgia just like when we play Axis and Allies. On the upside, I am now using the Mech figures for Alpha Wolves which we will be playing on Saturday Night so at least the Mechs have been given a new life.
