But I use ranch to coat food, like potatoes, dress a salad with it, and I use it to augment food like dipping fries into it. Does that mean ranch is all three? I feel that the definition is just too arbitrary.

Even under that lots of things can be used in multiple ways. Ketchup is a condiment that some coat meatloaf in. Ranch is used for all three. Mustard is used somewhat for all three? It's used often in salad dressings, but obviously not by itself. Thousand Island is used as both a dressing and a condiment. I am sauce inclusive. If you are semi-liquid and placed on at least some food you have a right to be called a sauce. Condiments are usually a type of sauce, though some aren't sauces. Dressings are just sauces that used on salads.

What about "if it says Sauce on the bottle, it's a sauce"? Ketchup, Mayo, Mustard, even Curry, they're all sauces according to those _selling_ them, but used as condiments according to Reddit. I'm going to trust professionals on this one.

Well it kind of does, doesn't it? When you train your dog to do anything, the initial barrier is a level of understanding. You teach it to understand words you say, and that process would become so short with this power you could influence even wild animals. Also remember animals aren't all superintelligent; it's already mostly the case that you can just offer them food and they'll do your bidding.

@@RenewedRS Not necessarily, if an animal does approach you, it's likely going to eat you, and the Idea that animals aren't 'super intelligent' poses the idea that humans are, whereas animals have had better comprehension skills then humans, between animals such as monkeys, chimpanzees, cayotes, a multitude of animals have sufficient intelligence to understand not to simply do a person's bidding simply because of food. Such as crows and wolves: they've been known to form partnerships where the crow will eat the scraps of prey that the wolf has hunted, while leading the wolf to said prey, and crows have also been recorded to have intelligence on par with that of a seven-year-old human, dogs can be taught tricks the same as humans can, because they are social and domestic creatures looking for some form of reward. With humans said reward is often in the form of candy or games for children or even money for many people. Sorry for the long rant.

That definition would imply that garlic is a condiment, as is oregano... I firmly disagree.

​@@IceMetalPunk condiment is usually defined by if it's added after cooking is done. so yes if you sprinkled some oregano on your food when you serve it, it would be a condiment, it wouldn't be, if used during the cooking process.

My parents are divorced. Presents with my mom after supper on Christmas Eve, presents with my dad after some meal or another Christmas day.

Gifts from dad’s side of the family on Christmas Eve, gifts from parents + siblings before brunch (we’re all adults so we don’t label them as being from Santa anymore,) and then gifts from Mom’s side of the family some time between Christmas and New Years.

Don't want to be that guy but, tomato sauce = ketchup, pasta sauce contains different items compared to tomato sauce. (I live in Australia so it might be a commonwealth language thing).

@@D0JES In the US ketchup is really the only word for that condiment. Pasta sauce/red sauce/pizza sauce/tomato sauce/marinara are all very related words for thinner, less vinegar-based sauces.

@@archivist8523 Same in the UK. Tomato sauce and ketchup aren't the same, and there are a good bunch of other tomato based sauces that aren't called tomato sauce or ketchup. They just look like they don't know a lot about kitchen stuff (i also wouldn't call mustard a sauce but a spice or condiment. If i say mustard sauce i'd reffer to a mustard based sauce like honey-mustard dressing)

No I agree, there's no world in my eyes where ketchup is a sauce but mustard isn't. They have virtually identical consistency and uses, so they should both qualify. Mayonnaise, maybe not, but it's also not *that* far away the more I consider it.
