Aww, c'mon Fallen Empires isn't horrible. (Yeah, Homelands... no) I started playing with Fallen Empires. I always loved the flavor. It depicted the world after Brother's war and I thought wotc did a good job of that. Keep in mind the actual good individual cards in FE: Hymn to Tourach, High Tide, Goblin Grenade, Goblin War Drums

wtf dude I was actually stoked to see that Tibalt print and then you go and replace him with Lava Girl? Why? (Last part was meant somewhat ironically) for real tho I don't keep up with MTG much, was that meant as a joke? Am I the only one who likes Tibalt? He was my first planeswalker so I'm clearly nostalgic, but I think it would be funny if he has a bad rep among mtg players

Hi professor, back in those days, the foil replaced the card, instead of being an additional slot. So if your pack had a foil rare, that was the only rare your pack had. This also applies to uncommons

Yes was going to mention this. Time Spiral was the first set where the foil didn't replace the same rarity from the pack. When I came back to the game 2 years ago and opened 2 rares from a pack I was shocked. Kamigawa block was actually the last set I opened before quiting.

I can see why it feels off to some people. Kamigawa was just the second block set after Mirrodin to use the modern frame. Meanwhile, Vintage (and Legacy) were the formats for the very old cards. Heck, card around 7th Edition era with the old frame still felt recent back then.

@@LinkEX the kamigawa came out 10 years later as abu roughly. It’s been 18 years since kamigawa roughly. I feel like the issue isn’t that these sets aren’t vintage, because at some point they were definitely considered vintage, it’s just that as that definition gets more and more true, and we feel the need to move the slider to feel og. Let me put it like this, in the next 2 years magic will be 30 years old. That will mean that the difference between og kamigawa and abu will only be 1/3 of magic history.

I think the end was your best monologue to date. It was so magnificent. (Although your monologue about card shops was also really extraordinary). I started playing in Onslaught. Back then, cards were remarkably affordable. Duals were 40 dollars or less. All those sets were so cheap. I bought box after box of Kamigawa, and I always enjoyed every single box of every single set I bought. But I will never have another one though. I will never crack another Onslaught box, or Kamigawa, or even Avacyn Restored. I remember an ex buying me a box of Avacyn Restored on a whim, simply because I said I wanted one, and he had the money. We pack warsed most of the box, but also drafted some of it with a group of our friends, and it was really an amazing experience that I will always cherish. Magic is full of that. It's just full of life history. Thank you for this journey down the rabbit hole of memories. You are an amazing spirit and I truly appreciate what you offer.

@gankgoat8334
@gankgoat8334 2 жыл бұрын
@@Grinthex The reason why it was considered a failure had more to due with the Blocks it was placed between, Original Mirrodin and Ravnica. The former was one of the most powerful blocks to come out, so when Kamigawa showed up with more experimental mechanics and lower power levels, most of the cards were never used while the two blocks were in standard together. When the latter rolled in and pushed Mirridon out, Kamigawa was already tainted and Ravnica had a higher power level as well with stuff like dredge. Pretty much a case of wrong place wrong time. The fact that despite being pushed out by two of the most popular sets and still being a cult classic for almost two decades speaks for how much it had left a positive impression. Heck they kinda tried to replace it with Tarkir and it still didn't reduce requests for Kamigawa.

Betrayers of Kamigawa had just come out when I was an 8th grader hearing about Magic. I didn't know a single thing about Urza or Dominaria, I couldn't really evaluate the mechanics as being underpowered, but I was drawn in to the world of abstract, almost nightmarishly strange Spirits opposing the mortals. So the world of Kamigawa, if not the mechanics or individual cards, have always had a special place in my mind.

Buying Mirage, Tempest, Stronghold, and Urza's Block as my first sets back when I was a teenager really primed me to love the experience. Kamigawa block was my first post-college block where I had enough money to buy more than a handful of packs and I bought several boxes worth since my girlfriend got into Magic and liked drafting. Seeing this video brought back the warm fuzzies, thanks Prof! I got lucky several years ago and bought some Eternal Masters from a shop near a friend's house, only to be surprised when I saw they had a couple of old boxes on the shelf - Stronghold, Exodus, and Prophecy... Really cool to see these being opened, so much nostalgia. I'm so sad at the recent increases in sealed products. Investors continue to ruin so much of this game.

When I started playing mtg in college around 2012, I was always sad to hear kamigawa was a flop and we were probably not going to get a return to set for it. Japanese mythology is fun and samurai and ninja are just cool. I am also half Japanese playing part of my heritage would be cool. Ironically, I wouldn’t get a set based around my father’s Nordic side until recently either but generic European fantasy fits that just as well. The true irony is I am no longer playing the game and probably won’t for a long time and Kamigawa is back. Maybe I will pick up a booster box just to have it.

If you're here commenting I feel like it's fairly likely you'll pick the game up again at some point, might be a good idea. :) Also storing a box away for a rainy day has an appeal to it.

Full of beautiful and at times weird art, interesting lore (evil white legend) as well as so much tribal synergy there. Samurai, ninja, spirits, ogres/demons, snakes, rats... Gameplaywise it was really really fun. Unfortunately, a scumbag I used to call friend back then stole my entire collection (barring like 10 cards I had for trading) AND I became so upset. Nowadays, the cards It hurt me the most to lose were my ninja and Kokusho.

Since I just came up with a commander deck that goes infinite with a diving top the idea that it's in a 'bad' set is just so wild to me. Edit: how is the top 60 dollars when I get near mints for 30 euros or less?

Card prices are different accross continents. I guess since people buy and sell in different platforms and few people bother sending overseas, EU and US markets are a bit isolated one from the other.

classic Kamigawa was the most beautyful set ever. Of course there were nice Sets, but nothing as breathtakingingly unique as the original Kamigawa. And it saddens me that almost all the uniqueness of the Plane got swept away into the new Kaladesh 2.0, or Neon dynastie as the kids say these days :(

I don't comment very often, but you have my upmost respect for opening these boxes. How I treat magic is how I treat many other hobbies of mine. The cards were meant to be played, my car is meant to be driven, my knives are meant to be used, my flashlights are meant to be on. I'm glad to see these cards are in good hands, hands of which will put them to use :)

Just seeing this video, and your commentary at the end was beautiful, and conveys some of the 'magic' of the mtg world. Seeing older mtg cards always takes me back to the place in time where I was when playing that given set...very vividly in fact, and also that my best friend (who died about 13 years ago) and I played together, and just seeing a particular card in passing (lord of the pit for instance) immediately brings me back to a particular night where the two of us were sitting in a smoky room in college playing till the wee hours of the night, and his only lord of the pit was in play and he knocked a drink over on it and we feverishly tried to dry it off (and other cards hit)...but going forward, we both knew where that card was in his deck because of the warping and that was ok and hilarious (he would start making ominous noises because yep, it's 3...2..1 card away and I'd be frantic preparing a defense). And so that's also why I love watching your openings and ruminations...because it really is speaking to the magic of it all that we love.

The middle and high school nostalgia here! I had a friend with a rough Zubera and Shrine deck that was really tough to deal with. Granted, I didn’t buy singles at that point and he did, so that made things a lot tougher for me!

I just came across your channel yesterday. I'm a returning player who got their start with these early-mid 2000's sets. It's crazy how expensive these sealed boxes are, though reasonable with how few probably remain. Just makes me wish I could go back to 2011 when I sold my cards and change my mind.

I like your content prof. Its amazing that you can do this stuff considering the value part of this. With revenue you get through doing this video you minimize the loss of value, when you are not selling these. It shows that "gambling" with cracking old displays for value is highly depended on the set. If i wouldve done that i would be soo angry knowing on how much money i lost but considering you buying those back in the day its not an issue to you. Sharing the experience is highly appreciated and probably saved not only me money and frustration but others too while providing entertainment and even showing some of the cards some might wanna pick up when the new set comes out. Thank you.

I started playing magic in 1999 during Mercadian Masques. I played through high school and eventually got back out of the game around the kamigawa block. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip through nostalgia! I wish I could go back to my local game store in 1999 when they had a beta black lotus in the glass counter for under $500.... and also a 1st edition base set Charizard for about $350..... I could retire on those two cards now haha

I'm only around half way through this video and honestly i've gotta say it makes me feel sick how expensive these boxes are!! But in saying that, i think it's very difficult to put a price on the beauty of the artwork in this block!! Honestly phenomenal!!! The nostalgia is so very powerful in me, watching these cards get opened again. It's right at the start of when i began playing Magic and Champions was the first Pre-release i ever attended. I was late, couldn't join in but still got to buy and open my cards. I pulled Kokusho, the Evening Star and fell in love with dragons and the set! So...with that in mind, i went and bought one of each of the boosters boxes a few months ago. I just had to. the announcement of Kamigawa Neon just reinvigorated me. I paid these crazy prices, i had them shipped from the USA, Italy and the UK. Thank you for opening these so that i dont have to. I now have a talking point, a set backdrop of my own to show off and an investment. It's funny that i bought my boxes around the time of this video being released but i've only just watched this as of now! Thanks Prof, shame the audio got out of sync by box 2!

Kamigawa was the block that got me playing full time. I'd collected since I was 5 but hadn't taken the game seriously until I heard that this Japanese-themed miracle was coming out. I bought out my local Fred's store (all 6 packs). Pulled a Divining Top and a Ryusei that are still two of my favourite cards, today. I remember, on a schoop trip to Europe, teaching other kids to play with a Betrayers theme deck I bought at a shop in Dublin. Not sure if any of them still play but I have that deck still together after all these years.

Kamigawa was the block which brought me back into the game, and I like to think I wouldn't have become a translator from Japanese if it wasn't for that. Which is why I wanted to do something special with the new Neon Dynasty cards, and your channel convinced me to just go ahead and make it my first cube. Now I just have to wait for the cards to actually go on sale... Thank you for everything you do, and thank you for this video!

My first experience of Kamigawa cards were from my buddy stopping at a game store on his drive back from college and meticulously rifling through singles to buy, with the specific target of countering our decks. We were basically playing standard around Shards of Alara with some duel decks cards thrown around. We lived in the middle of nowhere so didn't have an LGS or any people more experienced to expose us to other sets. The moral of the story is not to underestimate the value of an out-of-state education.
