Ash, do you see Spearhead becoming a "seasonal" thing? GW could release a new two-sided board, card deck and terrain in a single box set, that would represent two other realms. It would be one way to keep Spearhead fresh and in the War-Comm narrative. That is a problem with "a complete in the box" game.... How do you keep attention on it when you have other new product that you are trying to sell, which seems to be GW's model at the moment: Keep pumping stuff out for the Warhammer cultists to buy? Will be interesting to hear what Jay and Chris over at: "Lords of War and Games" have to say on this subject.

I think that’s definitely the shape of what ‘could be’ the plan. Honestly I think it’s up to them to have it pass or fail. Marketing this is going to be the key because they need to give a ‘lower shelf’ version of their game the same spotlight they give the ‘competitive’ Warhammer folks. It needs to have events at their GTs and spotlight the ‘come together’ and hobby parts. Here’s the thing, you can make anything succeed if you make people a part of it and feel like what they’re doing is valued. The community can’t do that for GW without that attention being paid to it. So what I’m seeing here is the potential of a product. I’m going to embrace it the way I think the designers intended and use it as a way to get all my lapsed or hobby focused Warhammer friends to have a good time with each other. Does that catch on? I hope so for the future of Warhammer. Whether or not it does is up to them though.

As someone new to AoS (an like, haven't played 430k since 4th/5th ed), Spearhead is a great way to scratch the itch while trying to slowly accumulate a matched play army. I think it is a good way to get into the game, as my partner who's never played any kind of wargaming has been picking up Spearhead games. I really, really hope the AoS people see the potential for Spearhead and keep chugging with it.

I think Spearhead tournaments have a huge potential. Plenty of tactical decisions, wide variety of forces available, balanced play? (seems there is), easy learning entry, and greater number of games that could be played. 4 games in 7 hours consisting of 1 1/2 hour games, with 1/2 hour breaks between games. This would leave plenty of time to eat, restroom break, check out venders booths, relaxed atmosphere. I truly believe that this concept is planned for Combat Patrol. Look at the pattern of all the new combat patrol boxes. Easier to balance, thought the Tau box has me puzzled.

The older dominion box is just 1 crossbow unit short of a Kruleboyz Spearhead.. I can see the forces I wanna build already.. I can't wait to play this

I appreciate that you want to be hands-free but I hate this overhead angle. I see other content creators do it and I typically have to shut it off. I like the way you've always done it. Just my 2 cents

Will add my 2c to say I agree. I've always loved the handcam as a great point of difference for Ash's videos. Feels more casual and gives the right vibes :). Will watch regardless though

I agree. One of the reasons that this channel stood out was the handcam. The overhead view just isn't engaging to watch. You can't really see the form or paint job of the models, and it has the effect of making games feel more like serious matches compared to fun activities.

This was tried for Infinity also and it wasn’t well received. I like the hand cam. I know it seems antiquated in some ways but it has more character than this fixed cam format. Things do change and it’s worth exploring I’m intrinsically a fan of it but I think this one was pretty good.

I could see, at least at the flgs lvl, Spearhead Tournaments. Quick games, small+limited amount of Terrain & small table space. This is definitely much more 'fully actualized' than Combat Patrol, for sure.

It’s very interesting that it seems as though they’re far more willing to experiment with AoS… where maybe they’re hampered by the idea that they don’t want to ‘rustle’ their larger customer pool. Either way, I’m very happy to see one of the design teams unafraid to throw out new ideas.

@@GuerrillaMiniatureGames agreed with the idea that ‘rusting’ 40K is seen as the bad idea until it’s proven elsewhere - AOS gets used seemingly more as a playground with ideas ported over if they’re positively received (10th being very eerily similar to AOS’ ruleset for example)

Ok so I was on the fence about the Skaven but the way you painted the Skaven markings on the terrain looks like a bunch of Punk Rock rats are skating in the mortal realms and tagging terrain as they go along.

Gonna try and use Spearhead to get some people into the hobby, will see how it goes. One thing about the video, might just be my issue though: I don't know what the mic setup was, but the sound keeps going from left to right for me, made it quite difficult to listen to it 🙈

This looks great fun! I've been a long term Warhammer player, but skipped all of Age of Sigmar so far. This feels like a super accessible way to get back into it, without too much investment of time and money. I drifted away from mass battles to more skirmish based games with low model counts such as Mordheim, Burrows & Badgers, and Battletech, but this feels like a good hybrid between the two.

It’s an excuse to paint up a small collection of models you like that you want to use for other things too… like skeletons for D&D or nice soldier models in the Cities of Sigmar, etc.

Generally not a fan of IgoUgo, but forces here are small enough that it seems to be working. I see a combination of a lot of good concepts here, and the way each turn seems to be engaging and presenting tough tactical choices lends to a game that gets played and replayed.

I truly understand that this is a great way to ease new players inzo the hobby. Also, Spearhead tournaments should be quite easy to host. Buuuut... the playing field & terrain look as boring as possible.

Great coverage - though out of interest do you use multiple microphones? You're the only channel I noticed where the sound seems to bounce around, not sure why but I find it distracting (not sure if I'm the only one though!).

1:29:37 I really think this is a bit of a design flaw - you actually want to make things very clear for players, and 'catch up' mechanics can often insentivise odd and suboptimal play. But yeah everyone will have opinions!

The catch up mechanics are randomly generated though, which will put a downforce on any attempts to game the system. Only half involve scoring and you’re going to have two twists per game sit out as you only draw 4/6 cards.

The unit composition is fixed, but the regimental bonus and hero loadout are actually picked after you know who is attacker defender and what faction you’re playing against.

I assume it will release on its own along with everything else. Also I’m sure EBay and Marketplaxe will have a ton of copies on it from the folks that just want the models.
