I loved this video! As someone who is interested in and reads lots of non-fiction, more vlogs like these are very welcome ☺️ I’m so glad you introduced me to this book, it’s definitely on my tbr.

I do think a nonfiction vlog is something I haven’t seen much and really enjoy ☺️ I already bought a copy of this book based on what you shared. If you were intrigued by the bits of information about Amazon from this book, I would also recommend the book How to Resist Amazon by Danny Caine

actually, on that note, have you heard of or read Because Internet by Gretchen McCulloch? it’s on the topic of internet-based linguistics and it’s one of my favourite nonfiction books, i’d highly recommend it!

i don’t know how familiar you are with the fan-fiction website ao3 (archive of our own) and its parent nonprofit, the otw (organization for transformative works), but they are a very interesting case study of sorts of a different method of operating online. the org is entirely funded via donations from the user-base and is run entirely by volunteers i.e. there are no paid owners or employees. i don’t think it’s a sustainable method for most circumstances but it still gives me hope for community-based internet! also worth noting that ao3 tends to be ranked at approximately the 100th most visited website globally! so it’s no small fry.

I am late to this video but I still wanted to comment and say how interesting I found it. I am absolutely in favour of more non-fiction reading vlogs! It really appreciated hearing your thoughts as you read it and your summarising of the key points and new to you (and to me!) knowledge. I always find reading non-fiction so interesting and then find it immediately impossible to articulate what I’ve learned to someone else 😂

Thank you so much for doing a video on this subject. This is an important issue. Please do more non fiction book vlogs. Even though I haven't read the book or know much about it, it is still fun to hear someone else's thoughts.

I bought this book on a Verso sale ages ago, I think during the pandemic because I have the ebook when usually I’d buy paper. I remember purchasing it in response to discussions of internet equity surrounding education, in particular. Our internet infrastructure in the US is not the greatest, and definitely not evenly distributed even within the same states, which is not what you’d think! I think I’ll have to give this a read now-no time like the present!

I really enjoyed this video. This is a topic on which I know very little, and it was helpful to have this distilled down so I now have a little bit of understanding as to how little I know, but in a way where I am now intrigued to know more, rather than just going about knowing absolutely nothing.

I added this book to my list as soon as I saw on Goodreads that you had read it - like you, I also believe essential services should be publicly owned, but I'd never considered the deprivatization of the internet. I think nonfiction reading vlogs work really well and I'd love to see more!

this was great |! i agree that non fic i think lends itself to vlogging maybe better than fiction, especially bc there's no spoiler concern. rly interesting to learn along with u & hear ur thoughts about the internet! im not a state socialist but i do agree with u about a lot of what u say !

I started Algorithms of Oppression but soft DNF’d it, I’ll definitely return to it. Word of warning, it was written a while ago and with the exponential growth of the internet and social media’s etc, it can feel outdated at times but the main point stands. I think it’s important to note so that people are prepared for it to be slightly historical (late 2010s)

Ooooh that makes sense to be honest. Especially with the rise of platforms like TikTok it is changing so quickly!! I will definitely remember that before I go into it. It feels like something an updated version of cold probably be published every year.

i remember a while ago you mentioning a non-fic book about the abolishment of the prison system and i was wondering if you could remember what it was called?
@JeansThoughts
@JeansThoughts 4 ай бұрын
Ooooh it could be a few! Are Prisons Obsolete by Angela Davis would probably be my go too though. It’s short and succinct. The New Jim Crow is one that specifically focuses on racism in the prison industry, and Inside This Place Not Of It records women’s experiences of prisons.
