Another complete "let's repair" Vlog of probably THE best deal I've ever scored on ebay! This time I snagged myself a faulty PAL TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine complete in original box with Blazing Lazers game and all the cables/inlays/paperwork. When I got the email from ebay telling me I'd won, I genuinely shocked. I think everyone else must have forgotten to bid or something! :P
I'm pretty unfamiliar with the system and know very little about it other than the videos I've seen from fellow KZfaqrs. I'd love to get some suggestions of games I should try.
Thanks for watching!

I was amazed by the quality of the console and packaging. I was about four or five when I got my first console, a NES, so there was no danger of me keeping it all in good nick but I had an older relative who kept his impecable. It makes me think that I had the right idea all along, after all two decades worth of pristine conditioning is great for the buyer buy only equates to around a tenner for the seller. I suppose it's more a lifestyle thing but it made me feel better about my habits anyway.

That's not a garbage bag. It's a grey self-sealing postal bag. You've never seen these before? Most big ebay sellers use them. You wrap whatever you're shipping in bubble wrap then pop it into one of these. Saves on postage costs, it's tamper/rain proof and same protection as a jiffy bag. Box wasn't damaged in transit.

haven't started yet but im going to start learning soon but seeing these kinda of videos makes me want to repair broken electronics like video game consoles. Yeah the reason was mostly to learn a new skill/hobby that could prove useful and fun at the same time. The idea came from watching arcade machine repair videos and my love of the old school gaming consoles

Nice video, you definitely bagged a bargain there and all you needed to do was a bit of resoldering. Makes me wonder why the original service engineer who worked on the PCB didn't have a proper go...

Yeah! But it was later official released by Telegames in UK only and in very limited quantities. It's so rare outside the UK that I've never saw one in person! You had an amazing deal on eBay with this and thanks your repairing skills now you're proud owner of a "NEC Turbografx" (without the "16", that's the name of the US one). Great!

That's cool that you got a fair price and was able to fix it up. I think it's interesting to see the inside of a video game console. That I wouldn't have the patience to fix them like you have. XD

Thanks dude. I was a bit surprised to see the condition of the board given the excellent condition of the outside! It seems someone bought it new and then tried to do the region mod. Kinda lucky they didn't fry something in the process! At least it was only about 5 pins I needed to resolder and not 300! lol Will check him out, thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to give the RGB mod a try I think.

Awesome, man! Not only a great deal, but the fix wasn't too difficult! I was surprised to see that the PAL Turbo-Grafx has an AV port... I had to mod my NTSC unit to get AV out. With an NTSC unit you'd need an over-priced expansion module called the Turbo-Booster to get anything but blurry RF out of it. Wish I could suggest a few games, right now I still only have just "Keith Courage in Alpha Zones" lol. Anyhow ;) Awesome job man!

Most retro PAL consoles are set to run at 50Hz by default. This is why some unoptimised games appear to run slower. That's why installing 50/60Hz switches on old consoles is very common/popular here.

I use a cordless butane iron for less intricate work such as desoldering RF shielding, removing old components and tinning wires etc. For more delicate stuff I use a cheap 30W iron with a very fine tip. Cheap irons are fine for most common jobs. They cost about £5 on ebay/Amazon.

I once got a new Sony Vaio laptop on Ebay for £90. It wouldn't power up, but the charger they sent me with it was for a different laptop and the wrong voltage. Plugged in the right charger and it powered up right away and the battery started charging. Never even had to pick up a screwdriver :)

I was pretty surprised to win it at that price! :) After a little research it seems like a previous owner had attempted to do an RGB and/or region mod. Possibly decided they were out of their depth but by that time had already killed the console. I just reconnected a couple of legs on that IC and it was good as new :) . A lucky find for sure!

Game suggestions: Devil's Crush - Great pinball game Military Madness - Nice little war game, not too complex Space Harrier - Pretty good port Before spending a lot of money on games, I'd suggest that you download an emulator like TurboEngine and try them out. Then you'll know which ones you'll like.

I was trying to find more info on this the other night. But it seems that because the console is a bit uncommon, there isn't much demand for finding a 60Hz solution. In most cases it would probably just be easier/cheaper to buy a US or Japanese system. I'm going to keep looking into it though. It can't be that difficult to revert it back to 60Hz. Maybe I already have some junk consoles with the required parts.

I'm starting to think so. Either a region mod or RGB mod gone wrong. Interesting to read about all the new old stock that seems to be floating about. I never knew the system was never officially released in the UK. That would explain why the system is in seemingly unused condition.

After seeing the condition of the board I just assumed the thing must have been fried or previously repaired and had died again.
