A review, unboxing and teardown of the Magic 2 (a.k.a. Scorpion XVI, Aito, MG-16), an early 90's SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis 1:1 hardware clone. The unique thing about this bootleg console is that it uses many of the exact same components found in a real Mega Drive. Even more impressive is the fact that it's actually compatible with the Mega CD add-on! (and 32X with a bit of soldering ;p)
The Scorpion 16 pirate console is probably best known for it's brief appearance on the early 90's gaming TV show Bad Influence. If you haven't already seen the now infamous clip with Andy Crane and Violet Berlin then I highly recommend checking it out...
• Scorpion Sega Megadriv...
Something interesting I noticed after reviewing this clip again is that the console Andy Crane is holding doesn't actually have a second cartridge slot fitted to it! If you look closely you can see it is just like mine with the area for the card edge being unpopulated.
Thanks for watching!

This was made by a Taiwanese company, called 慶威電子 (King-Wei Electronics, Inc). The company closed in 1998. This is called 'War God (戰神)" in Asia, but the official model is KW-501. More info can be found on the Segaretro.

The bottom panel isn't to store a hidden game. It was to house one of the many multi-carts that usually come packaged as built in games in other clone consoles.

This is how all clones should be. I think we're all sick and tired of that system-on-a-chip garbage they're always trying to sell us. I imagine they probably keep doing it that way because it's cheaper, but it just doesn't work well. They are never 100% compatible with every game, they usually have very inaccurate sound(and sometimes colors too), have cheap worthless controllers packed in with it, and far too often stop functioning very shortly after purchase. Sometimes they don't work right out of the box! I want to see a *real* clone that is either 100% accurate or damn close to it! In other words, another one of these.
@TorutheRedFox

Some clones are on a chip but they are very accurate.The reason why the sound is bad on them is because of some chips and wires.Just unsolder them and there you go.

JMFSpike I don't know if I can do that, however I do know that the retron 2 and 3 use actual hardware from the old systems. Most of these clones are just refurbished consoles. There's a ton of Gameboy clones with the same premise, mainly sold in the Chinese market. I assume it has to do with a leftover stock of replacement parts that was either stockpiled or sold off to China.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 9 жыл бұрын
JMFSpike Problem is, where would you source components for a clone? If i were to design a NES clone, i think i'd go for single-chip solution. Why? Because there are accurate 6502 logic cores that i can synthesize, but the rest is custom logic - there's no way to source it. And since a few years have passed, and i'll need to design all component replacements from scratch anyway, i'll just place them on the same chip. Of course i'm introducing the likelihood of design errors into the custom components, the graphics and the sound synthesizers, but there simply is no way around it. If it was a SNES or MD clone, things are a bit different, depending on synthesizable core availability. It possibly makes sense to source the real SNES CPU (WDC65816), but graphics and sound invariably need to be done from scratch, introducing the possibility of errors, but the CPU is better specified than the custom parts, so chances are if i were to design a clone of that, i could make an exact CPU clone. So SNES again makes potentially sense to make on a single chip. If it was a MD clone, you can source real CPU and possibly real synthesizer, though availability of the synthesizer could become difficult, but if i cared for the result more than the cost, it would be worth it. Sourcing the CPU again makes comparatively little sense, for the above reason, because exact replica logic cores are around. Graphics would still need to be done from scratch. There's another trend that recently handheld makers don't even attempt to clone hardware and use generic media player SoC instead. Now that is just shoddy, they run simplified versions of software emulators which don't aim for cycle accuracy not in the slightest, they are scanline oriented, and there are plain tons of bugs that they could attend to but don't. Another missed possibility is shipping an FPGA console, and open-source the synthesizable logic, and hoping to match the behavior of the real console down to the cycle precision eventually with community help.

They did indeed sell these in Beatties. At the height of the Mega Drive, these were being sold for £39.99 in my local store. I can't remember exactly how much the official Mega Drive's were selling for at the time, but I think somewhere in the region of a hundred pounds more sounds about right. The guy behind these things lived local to me and was featured several times on Central News East, in reports about how he was producing these knock-off consoles and the issues relating to hardware piracy. Beatties didn't stock them for very long, and I only ever saw them available some years later in a small local indie game store. Beatties, for those who don't know, was originally a toy and model shop, but in the early 90's they moved dramatically towards video games and often featured playable demo cabinets and virtual reality machines in store.

SE-93 is pin and function compatible VDP to original chip. SE-94 is the IO and bus management chip, also pin and funciton compatible with real Sega chip found in later MD1 boards. The Oscillator is NTSC based which is why its not exactly the same. These "superclones" are total awesome !

There's also another really good Mega drive Clone: Megavision, it was an brazillian clone developed by Dynacom (wich also produced some nice quality famiclones) that clones works with Mega cd, 32x, it has nice sound, it is region free, and also runs Virtual racing, it runs at NTSC speed, it even had its own Master System to Mega drive converter. Sadly Tectoy (the distributor of Sega products in Brazil) barred the sales of the Megavision, and took it out of the market, its a very rare an expensive console nowdays.

I remember buying mine back around 1994 or 1995 from a short lived computer shop in Boston, Lincs. - I remember it was really cheap either £39 or £49 - It was a real 'impulse buy' because of the super cheap price, as I had missed out the whole 8 and 16 bit console craze, jumping from Speccy/C64 to Jaguar and 3DO. Loved the compatibility of it! I dug it out recently and have been playing it again after finding a compatible power supply. I love the sheer compatibility of the thing.

When you say you dont see hardware clones in todays world with Xbox and Playstations...I dont think it is just technical reason but also consider the fact all consoles(except maybe Nintendo) are sold at loss and Microsoft and Sony make back money lost on console thru game sales and accessories. So with that reality there is no $ to be made for clone manufacutrer as he wont be able to beat price of real hardware which is being sold at loss.

In the developing during the prime of Sega Mega Drive, fake Mega Drive systems are still branded Sega. One way to tell if it's genuine of fake is to peek the holes at the bottom and look the PCB if you can tell them apart. The best way to buy a genuine Mega Drive system is to buy it soon after it was released. Once fake appears it would be too late because genuine disappears in the store and even you look everywhere for genuine you can't find any. Even genuine game cartridge are rare and hard to find and fakes are almost as expensive as genuine.

Ideally you need to get a scope and logic analyser onto the job and compare signals to working MD and 32x. Could be a noisy / different sync signal or something. Also possible timing difference somewhere else on the scorp - maybe that jumper on its own for 60hz isnt enough? Presumably youve tried 50hz with 32x? Great vids btw!

Five years later I chime in. I'm not trying to be a dick, but the one in the middle is absolutely not "emulation". It is a hardware clone. It just isn't as good as the Scorpion because there are missing components that render some games incompatible. However, the games that work look identical to the way they would on a real console. The sound is usually another story.

It's a weird one for sure. I've now managed to get it running at 60Hz and built a RGB connector for it :) . Dare I say the video quality is slightly better than the Mega Drive!

i might be wrong, but i think that the reason it is locked to PAL is a feature of the console as many Tv's back in the 90's where not compatible with 60hz NTSC, the reason for the main oscillator on the board is that the chipset and cpu (68k), sound (z80) will have its own clock divided by the custom Chips, to be compatible with other regions the clock are changed but the final video output will stay at 50hz pal, very clever for a 90's clone, i wonder if the 32x can be made to work?

I might make a portable (so original) GameCube. Using the classic folding screen top, and a laptop battery. Maybe even shorter cord lengths for the controllers. Probably never gonna do it, but it's just an idea I had.

Martin, these clone units of the MD are they still avaliable? How is the audio and the colors on display, just like the real Genny?
