I understand and respect that this movie isn't for everyone. However, so many of y'all completely missed the point. It's about how the patriarchy hurts BOTH women and men by putting these gender stereotypes on us. And the patriarchy is not just men, it is society as a whole. This is not about hating men or "women are so much better than men". It's a commentary about how women are viewed as LESS THAN in the real world. But the message is not that women are superior to men, it's that we're EQUAL and WORTHY on our own. Barbie doesn't just exist to look good and Ken doesn't just exist to be Barbie's boyfriend/sidekick. They are both worthy of happiness and love as INDIVIDUALS. Also, Barbie didn't treat Ken badly, she just didn't want to be in a relationship with him and he refused to take the hint. Men have been taught that women owe them something so when Barbie rejected him he took it as her being mean to him. But she didn't actually owe him ANYTHING. I've also seen some people say the movie is anti-motherhood, which it is not. It's simply about being able to have a CHOICE. America Ferrera's character specifically says that it's okay to "just" be a mum. You don't have to have a career or choose between a career and being a mum. Plus the pregnant Barbie was a real Barbie that was discontinued because people thought the idea of it was funny seeing as she didn't have a vagina (and you know, was a DOLL). Speaking of, the ending with Barbie going to the gynecologist, now that she has a vagina, is actually genius. Because, aside from the fact that they had emphasised that she was a doll and therefore didn't have a vagina, it's just a part of being a woman/having a vagina. It's so mundane and something we don't really think about. It symbolises Barbie transitioning into a human/adult, similar to girls going go the gyno for the first time representing that transition from girl to woman. This is signifant because although Barbie is portrayed by an adult actress, her worldview is very childlike (as is Ken's). And this movie is NOT aimed at kids. It's aimed at people who played with Barbies when they were kids but are now adults who are dealing with real life issues. Margot Robbie is fabulous as always but Ryan Gosling just took it to another level as Ken! America Ferrera is very underrated as well.

Perfect analysis. I would only add one thing. There's seems to be a percentage of people who are angry or sad that Ken and Barbie don't end up together in this story. Barbie is Gloria's Barbie and Gloria never had a Ken. Gloria's Barbie does not have Ken as her boyfriend. This is re-enforced when Physicist Barbie and her Ken re-unite. Clearly their owners did have those Ken and Barbie as boyfriend/girlfriend. So the movie is not saying women don't need men, just that this particular Barbie doesn't need a boyfriend.

I think people who didn’t play with Barbie and/or don’t know Barbie canon don’t get why Ken was treated the way he was. Barbie wasn’t mean to Ken. She just didn’t want to date him. In Barbie Land she can be/do anything she wants. So Ken can be her boyfriend or just a friend. In Barbie Land Ken really is… just Ken lol He’s not a career guy. Mattel didn’t create houses, cars, etc. for him. So the world they created in this film is accurate. This movie was successful because it catered to an underserved market: women. Regardless of race and socioeconomic background, many girls played with Barbie’s. They also cast leads that both men and women love. The marketing for this was also brilliant. People seem to be taken aback by the message in this film because they go into thinking it’s a little kids movie. It’s not. It’s a movie created for the women who were once little girls that played with Barbie. It hits on topics that women (and men) deal with in the real world. Barbie Land doesn’t need to change. It’s imaginary and allows girls to imagine themselves as anything. The real world is what needs to change.

Did... you watch the film? Barbie literally apologizes to Ken because she realises she was being mean to him. That not every night had to be girls night. She also openly admits she is dating him but he is just an accessory. He even says to her when he asks to stay over... "Because we are boyfriend and girlfriend." to which she just nods and smiles, then tells him to leave. She doesn't even know where he lives. A part of the film is Barbie understanding that the way she treated Ken was not okay and she didn't have to neglect his feelings quite so much. Not wanting to be with him is fine, but treating him like garbage isn't. Try actually paying attention to a film, the scene with her apologizing to him is not there by accident.

The real world is what womanhood feels like; it's scary, there's pain & we are faced with so many challenges, while still being held to unrealistic expectations by society. As we get older, we see and understand sacrifices our mothers and grandmothers made; they walked so we could run. "We mothers stand still so our daughters can look back to see how far they have come"

Speaking for a lot of traditional men or older men, or workaholics, here's how it has generally come across to me: A lot of these men feel like their job in life is to protect and provide a life for their family that they themselves aren't really invited to. Basically, they go to work, and they are useful. They come home, and they are useless. Guests in their own home. So they might as well contribute as much as they can in the one place they feel like they CAN contribute. It's one of the things they've been finding out a lot when studying the gender pay gap. Women feeling welcome at work is only part the picture. The other part is men feeling valuable in the home, or that their value is more than their paycheck. So you find men taking some major hits to their quality of life in exchange for greater pay. Whether by pressure from others, or feeling that's where they are most useful. I think it was some of those countries in Northern Europe that were putting of PSAs saying "your family needs you....at home" and showing dads playing with kids and such. I think helping men find better balance will help complete the puzzle.

@@webx135 My parents had a very traditional arrangement. Mom mostly stayed at home (she began to work more as the kids got older). Dad worked and fixed things around the house, while mom was ostensibly _a housewife._ It worked for them. And my dad was a good role model IMO, for he would pick up any slack if my mom needed help, or wasn't feeling well. And their recreation time was always as a pair or the whole family. I was fortunate enough to care for them in their final years. Oh, how I miss them.

My father has stated that he was never, fundamentally, all that invested in being a parent. He went along with what his wife-at-the-time wanted and he did quite probably an above-average job all in all, because he's a decent human being (and had very progressive views for his generation), but if it had been up to just him or if he'd happened to fall in love with women who didn't want kids, he wouldn't have had them. I suspect that life experience is pretty common - and not just for men, although it's more taboo for mothers to admit anything similar.

@@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll You are probably right. But that may be changing. Granted, I have a small sampling to choose from, but most of the women in my life are not interested in having kids (or outright don't want them). That includes my daughter and her aunt (my ex-sister-in-law). Out of the 14 women I've been with, only 3 ended up with children (one already had kids when we dated). It could be a new trend, like what's happening in Japan. I admit, those in my social circle rarely dive into the nuclear family mindset.

@@theshadowfax239 it is Barbie’s problem because they were actually created for a purpose, to be in love. That was their main purpose. Barbie ofc was the first doll from Barbie world to experience what it is being human, to which she introduced those ideas to the Barbies later on and then to the Kens. Ken didn’t have his own “personality” since he was created as a side character to Barbie so obviously when he saw men being important in the real world, he wanted that since he felt useless. The Kens in general were neglected and were a second thought to the Barbies which is why it was easy for them to accept Patriarchy since it meant they could control their own lives and get back at the Barbies. The movie displays both sides as being toxic and problematic, Ken is supposed to represent women in the real world while Barbie was supposed to represent men who only care about themselves. The movie promotes gender equality but with an emphasis more on being a woman. It was the Barbies fault for what happened, just like how the majority of problems in the world are men’s fault.

The woman guessed wrong almost every time. I think she just didn’t get it. Even her take that Barbie was buying a vagina. She became human and human women’s vagina is a huge deal right now. It has been with who we are from the Garden of Eden, to being property, to second class citizens, to the constant fight for equal worth and rights. Actually this is a point lost on a ton of people. But I think the woman didn’t understand the parodies very well so the storyline seemed weak when in fact it is massively world view changing, clarifying. It is deep but hidden so perfectly with humor and incredible set designs and costumes. Ironically, the guy seemed to guess things better and understand the subtext much better. But overall it was a good and solid reaction. Thank you both.

For me the main message of the movie is that you don't have to live in the box society places you in. Or the limits you place on yourself. You're not defined by the things you have or people around you or the expectations on you. Only you get to define yourself. Barbie gets to become human and be a complicated, dynamic individual. And Ken isn't his girlfriend or his coat or even beach. He's Ken and he gets to define himself, too. He's Kenough just as he is. And, secondary to that, society doesn't always keep up or treat people right so don't be complacent about the status quo. Question how things are done and if how things are done is actually good or just taken for granted thats how it is. Try to have perspective for others. At one point slavery was considered "normal" and women couldn't vote. That didn't make any of that good or right, but it took time for enough people to really realize it and then they had to fight to change things. How the Kens were treated was bad. The real world has come a long way in working toward equality, but it's not perfect. And change doesn't happen overnight, but that doesn't mean we stop striving for it. I also liked MellVerse take in his reaction. That the movie is also the journey of growing up. The beginning their views are simplistic and everything is "perfect" at least for Barbie. Bc children before about age 8 can't really do perspective. Like sit a kid at a tea party table with stuffed animals and ask them to draw the tea party from the teddy bears perspective and they can't. It will be from their own. That starts to change around 8ish. All kids have main character syndrome lol... Second act, Barbie experiences adolescence. She starts getting some complex existential awareness and her body is changing on her and she doesn't understand what's going on and has to find herself and who she is in the real world. Then she grows up. And its not pretty or perfect and life has change and loss but also excitement and new experiences. And its finite imperfections are what makes it beautiful. She embraces who she is and that she doesn't have the answers but thats ok. The journey is worth it.

About the ending scene (gynecologist): When Barbie closes her eyes after talking to Ruth, she sees images of women, with Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” aptly playing in the background. She possibly comes to the conclusion that the thing she wants to create is a legacy of her own, or maybe it’s just the fact that she’s a human that’s made her excited to see a gynecologist. And anyway, that’s the big physical change she has when she becomes human (other than getting a heart and other organs too). Jokes aside, we believe Barbie wants to be a mother at some point; maybe it’s her reflecting Gloria’s thoughts and feelings too.

The line about Ken having just as much power as women in the real world is fantastic. Because no matter who is hearing and what their views, if you think that the line means Ken is not equal in Barbieland, you are also acknowledging that women still aren't equal in the real world. The only way that line is negative is if you think that women have less power and autonomy and say in things by a large margin. Otherwise, it should be an uplifting statement.

Movie was also really good at highlighting both the push for women to be more than moms. There is the undertone of stating you can be whatever you want no matter mom or astronaut. Additionally it touches on the male bashing that occurs if you don’t say “correct” things. It’s really interesting. I can see y'all not enjoying this movie and being unpleasantly surprised if you were looking for a simple, happy, bubbly movie! I think those of us who really enjoyed it, and want to see it multiple times, enjoy looking at the deeper meanings in the movie and really enjoy the way this one was written and crafted. It's more of a thought-provoking movie than a fun one! (Though it is very fun in moments!). So, simply saying - I don't think you were wrong for disliking it. To me, this movie is a lovely representation of what it means to be human. She has a "perfect" life, but it feels empty because there is no challenge or emotion or change within it. So the entire movie is Barbie coming to terms with those things and finding out they are beautiful - the scene with the old woman, her crying, the bits with America Ferrarro's character. Ken's story is the same kind of trajectory too - finding purpose and meaning in himself and not in what he thinks he should be. He was never going to be happy if his happiness relied so heavily on Barbie. This movie feels like it came out at a really good time, with so much fear of change and so much insistence that there's a "right" or "wrong" way to be yourself. Also - the Ken part at the end was a joke, but also a reminder that things aren't fixed overnight! Women weren't immediately given equality - it had to happen over time. Barbieland isn't going to be perfect in that either, but it's able to be a little lighter because the Kens seem perfectly fine with it so long as they get to wear robes. It doesn't have the same darker outcome that inequality might have in the real world, lol! Anywho, hope y'all have a great day, and I hope the response here didn't sour y'all too much! I think some people forget that others might have different tastes than they do and that's okay! Y'all weren't dunking on the movie at all, you just expected a different vibe. Perfectly reasonable.

Great movie exposes the bias in all of us. Catastrophy makes everyone realize we only survive by working together using their individual talents and common advantages as humans. The way things are going gender and all these stereotypes we keep will be useless when our basic needs as humans aren't being meet. During the great depression nobody was worried about being better than someone else or getting attention they were just trying to survive and eat, I hope we as the human race aren't in that situation again.

I went and saw this with my girlfriend. She had to leave, but wanted me to stay and tell her if the rest of the movie was good. I had a good time. Like yeah, I think a lot of the messages are pretty blunt and exaggerated. As a guy who tries to follow both women's and men's gender issues, some stuff did have me recoil a bit. ("The kids never take it out on the dad". WTF really?! "Everything is your fault". There's literally an entire academic field dedicated to how everything is men's fault.) But I'm aware I wasn't the target audience, and it had a bit of a "venting out" aspect to it. I thought it worked with the over-the-top hammy vibe of the movie. Despite my above criticism, I loved America's frustrated outburst. I thought that was a pretty powerful moment, and I like those moments of insight about women's frustrations. And I'm actually surprised they gave Ken and arc and had a bit of a message there as well. I mean it was definitely still "A woman's idea of what men's issues might be". But there were legit aspects to it, and some angles I didn't expect. They didn't really need to do that, so I was kinda impressed Greta went there. Also, the movie is a bit of a Rorshach test. It had so many strong takes in so many different directions that everyone will find something to be offended by. So it's interesting to see which parts people latch to. I thought it was just kind of a fun movie experience. It wasn't mind-blowing, but I thought it really put itself out there, and had me rolling at several points.

That outburst that she said yes most women feel this way in society and have felt this way for a long time but I don’t believe that the outburst was just saying women feel this way. The first time I heard it right away I thought there are some things she said men could also relate too that’s what this movie was about. Men shouldn’t treat women like shit and women shouldn’t treat men like shit. We all need to treat each other equally and rule this world together as a team, hand in hand side by side. That’s why Barbie apologized to Ken at the end bcuz even though she wasn’t being outright mean to him like he did to her but she was indifferent, dismissive, wasn’t considerate of his feelings. And like she said took him for granted. We all deserve to be seen and to be heard.
@webx135
@webx135 9 ай бұрын
@@amber.ren_1995 "but I don’t believe that the outburst was just saying women feel this way." Yes exactly! I think that's the key difference in my reaction. The fact that she is venting these frustrations of her experience as a woman isn't implying that men can't relate to these. I could relate to like half of what she was saying. Or some of it, the pressure felt the exact opposite. Greta Gerwig even said herself that she felt men had their own speech they could give, and that she tried to at least hint at it. That's where I give her kudos and give the movie a lot more slack. And to me, being able to acknowledge some of her struggles as "shared" instead of "stolen", makes it much easier to relate to her and to women's frustrations as a whole. The feeling like the issues are "stolen" doesn't come from nowhere, though. In a lot of cases, women vocalize issues that men either didn't have the wording for, hadn't thought too much about, or internalized as "that's a me problem. not a society problem." So if we can relate to issues that women put into words, it feels like it's being "taken", or that you *get* to blame society for what we have to blame ourselves for. Or the worst is "men obviously don't feel this, because I've never heard them mention it." or "men don't get to complain about this because they made society this way." To me, that last one was always more damaging than something "man up". It's like "Feel bad? Well you should feel bad for even feeling bad. And you only have yourself to blame for feeling bad. So simply put, if you feel bad, it's because you're awful." So it's easy to get defensive. You kinda have to learn to navigate it and process it properly. And I kinda went in knowing a few things would make me defensive, which helped me look past my own experience.

Agreed on the Rorshach test. I thought the movie itself was solidly meh, but I have enjoyed a number of thoughtful video essays in response to it - generally through a leftist and/or gender-anarchic lens (and critiques of those views, etc.). This will be some people's first encounter with basic feminist ideas, and that's certainly valuable. I just don't get the hype, personally.

I know that song called “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Ellish fit so well in the movie just because it can relate to Barbie just to show was she made to be Barbie or to be a human? And she chose to be a human. But they didn’t have to play it again during the end credits after the song Barbie World. I found it very depressing
