I’m not a Chevy guy from a long shot, however I can appreciate the fact that they give you options with their full size trucks, v8 or turbos. Also I appreciate the simplicity of the analog gauges! I’m a Toyota guy and they ruined the new tundra, digital gauges, and they got rid of their v8, they only offer the v6 twin turbo. Looks like I’ll keep my 1st gen tundra with the 4.7L V8 for the long haul. Technology is killing the truck market!

Yup wrong turbo truck and post elevation this is at. Sea level to maybe 1000’ the only place they will be that close and 2022 refresh and newer has 430 ft/lbs at 3000 rpm (that’s 82 more!). At 4000’ where I live I have 90 ft/lbs more torque at 1100 rpm less than the 5.3 does and only a 5 hp deficit. Amazing how people can’t read or research anything. Oh and the turbo has no lifters. Of all half ton motors the 2.7 is the most truck like formula period and has least amount of flies on it. Inline, big jugs, long stroke, one turbo. That’s 21st century cummins formula in gas. GM can see the future well. At my elevation I have 22 ft/lbs more than the 6.2 with a 63 hp deficit and I’m way lighter. That would be a much closer race, the 5.3 here isn’t even in the same league. Only 40% live around the coast, 60% at elevations. Turbos only lose 0.05% power per 1000’, naturally aspirated is 3% per. You’re welcome folks, try harder to learn about subjects before spouting off and removing all doubt. ;)

That was pretty close from a dead stop. Chevy claimed the 2.7 is just a little behind the 6.2. Turbos are game changers as they produce power lower in the rev range where most people need it. Most people simply are not running their V8s to rev-line coming off a stoplight. At altitude, the 2.7 turbo is even more responsive than the V8. For heavy duty towing, the V8 might feel more relaxed but I have seen the 2.7 deliver 15 mpg while towing. Can the V8 deliver that mpg while towing?
@slinkyaroo

Turbos aren't game changers. They've been out for decades. If not for legislation and epa/mpg mandates we would be developing more powerful V8s instead of boasting I4s.

4 cyl engines weren't meant for this much power. They'll wear out much quicker and get worse gas mileage than v8 when towing. Just look at the crappy Ford ecoboost. Blowing up at 80k. I'll stick with my 5.3L. With some bolt ons and update to ECU/TCU, I'm running all 8 cylinders full time and getting 16/20 mpg with 310whp on 87 octane. Plus, I know my 5.3L will make it to at least 250k before blowing up. Stay away from turbos and superchargers unless you can afford to replace the engine.

@@amt3735 2.7L 4 has the same bottom end and number of main bearings as a 5.4L V8. The 4 cylinder crankshaft is even stronger than the V8 due to having only 4 cylinders!
@63DW89A
@63DW89A Жыл бұрын
@@thefishhobbyist5478 In two engines of equal displacement, a 4 cylinder will make its torque and power lower in the RPM band than a V8. The reason is because the 4 cylinder piston is larger and has a faster torque rise than the V8. Example a 200 CID 4 cylinder has 50 CID cylinders while the 200 CID V8 has 25 CID cylinders. Also the V8's 25 CID pistons have to fire 90 degrees apart meaning the V8 peak power / torque will have to be at higher RPM than the 4. Now you know why almost every engine below 2.5 Liters is a 4 cylinder. A 2.5 Liter V8 would feel very weak next to the 4 with it's strong low end torque. This is why the 2.7 L turbo 4 will have stronger torque at lower RPM than the normally aspirated 5.3 Liter V8.

The v8 got it. As far as the new i4... it has more torque and hp... this was a fair comparison or as fair as it can be... I'm a turbo guy but you still can't beat a v8. It has more potential also... good stuff. The v8 still lives! Also the rear gear is higher on the v8 truck. That's hugely important in acceleration. If the v8 had a 3.42 instead of 3.23 it would have been a bigger gap. The 2.7 had the gearing advantage but not the hp

Not bad for a 4 banger.. However I have one with the 4.3 v6 eco. My 4.3 4x4 is rated for the same towing capacity as the 5.3 v8. The difference is the rear axle gears. The 5.3 seems to have something like 3.23 gears.. The 4.3 has 3.42, some with 3.73. Too me, the gearing may allow a small engine to tow more. But I don't see it giving better mileage. If a person had a rearend that shifted like a transmission. Then you may actually see better mileage out of the smaller engines.. Currently in real world tests.. The 5.3 is maybe a mile per gallon worse, which is not really saving anything or any less greener. Starting to think the small engine idea is more of a hype to get new people to buy a pickup. Thinking they get all this towing power of a v8. I am sure a smaller engine is cheaper to make at the factory. Which is another reason they want you to buy them. I know my 4.3 does ok for what it is. But towing 7000 up a hill that engine is screaming and drinking gas like water. When comparing my mileage to other people with 5.3 or a 6.2. I get a lot worse towing.. Only time I get better mileage then a v8 is on a highway with to trailer and little stopping as possible. 2.7 would be ok for a person to tow lighter loads.. But a heavy load will make that engine work hard and reduce it's longevity vs having a v8.

If your thing is to drag race, do it with a car. A truck is actually...a truck. It is not intended to be a drag racer. A truck is intended to haul and to tow. If you are buying a truck in order to be a hot dog drag racer, you are going to be very disappointed. More importantly, you are going to expose in yourself a lot of ignorance and stupidity.

Bill, if you are using your truck -with any engine- as a race car then you have a real problem.... you have no idea what a truck is built and used for and what a car is built and used for. Cars are not built to haul bales of hay and loads of lumber.. And, trucks are built to haul and tow stuff like bales of hay and loads of lumber, not to be race cars. That's why trucks have a truck bed and a tow hitch attached to their frames in the back of that bed. And it is why cars do not. This is not all that difficult to understand. At least for most people.

@@georgepoker3839 Most likely this a bad guess. The 5.3 has been around since the 1990's and has been refined over and over during that time. The 5.3 will last a very long time. No one knows how long the little 2.7 will last. Still way too early to tell.

There’s also something else to consider with fuel prices the way they are today; that 2.7 is NOT making 420TQ unless using premium fuel. The ecu limits quite a bit of power on 87 and in fact they don’t even recommend using anything but high octane for that engine, whereas the 5.3 can run whatever you put in it just fine except for diesel.

The 2.7 is considered a large displacement 4 cylinder and built for truck duty cycles. European trucks have used smaller displacement turbo engines for decades and are still on the road. YT Video: 'All-new 2.7-liter turbocharged engine for the 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500'.
